We bought a house with 20 acres and it has a large garden plot. This year we tilled it and are starting a garden. We have probably 15 sprouts of asparagas that volunteered to come up. They are rather thick, probably 1/2 in diameter, and they are sparce in a 2' by 6' space. What should I do with this, can I help nurture it into a good bed of asparagas? Do different varieties grow with different thicknesses?
Thanks
Asparagas
You have to catch asparagus early if you want to eat it, before it gets thick and woody. Around here it's early May, you are probably earlier than zone 5b. I don't know the different kinds of asparagus that are available. I think ours is Martha Washington. You could plant new asparagus roots, but they have to be planted 18" deep. We dug a big trench when we first planted ours. The weeds, of course, have taken over, but asparagus still comes up through them. Not the prettiest site.
