Comments regarding Gilbert H. Wild and Son

I ordered handful of hostas. Supposed to be 2-3 eyes #1 grade. 64 good ones. The rest were bean sprout size. When I complained I was told to ship them back. I didn't keep them since I have never ordered from a company who wanted "junk" back. They faxed me a note that they were sorry I was so upset. Save your money and get hostas elsewhere. Even if you're buying bargains, you should get what they advertise.

I have been ordering daylilies from Gilbert Wild since 1996, I cannot tell you how much pleasure I get from their plants. I have ordered from other companies, but I like the quality of their plants, and prices they offer. If I have a problem with one of the plants I receive, I just call, and they replace it immediately. I live in San Antonio, Texas, so I need to get my plants planted by April, due to extreme heat, they always, send my order when I request. The past few years, I soak my plants in water, and a small amount of miracle grow, before I plant them, and they bloom within a few months, so I get results right away. I cannot say enough good things about this company.

I only stopped ordering daylilies from them when I ran out of room, otherwise, I would have kept on ordering. The peonies that I put in two years ago looked like the deadest black knobs when I planted them, and then bloomed beautifully the first spring. This year, they are as large as the old ones that came with our house, and nearly as full. I plant my peonies in the shade and have fed all of them just once I think. I will be ordering more peonies from them this summer. Great outfit - good products, good prices, and well-packaged.

I have ordered Daylilies from Wild's for the past ten years or so, and have always experienced mixed results. Almost every order I have placed has not been completely fillled (they are out of stock), and particularly this year. I placed an order (among others) for two very popular hems, neither of which they were able to supply. I wonder if they were a "come on", because I ordered them as soon as I received their new catalog! Otherwise, most of their stock is (relatively) healthy. I have lost a few plants each year, because of poor quality. The early orders always come dormant (which is expected) but it is difficult to nurse some of the smaller stock to robust health.

Just received my order for 100 ground cover daylilies. They arrived in great condition and I am very pleased with the size and price. I will buy from them again.

I have nothing but praise for Wild's, although the pricing system is a little bit hokey: buy over so much and everything is half price from the catalog, soon to be followed by a flier offering many of the same plants at half price.
As for the quality, it's great and that's what really matters to me. I buy from them every year and will until my dream of owning practically every daylily known to man is accomplished.

I have purchased daylilies and peonies from Wilds for 50+ years -- my family even longer. We have always been satisfied.

Ordered daylilies last year. Big plants, came packaged nicely. They run some great specials. I would recommend them highly.

I have ordered peonies from Gilbert H. Wild for several years (I now have 30 or more). The quality of only one plant ever less than I had expected - it had no visible eyes. However, to my surprise, that spring it grew with one cane, and the next year it produced three. All other plants ordered were of excellent quality and arrived at the proper planting time. They are all thriving now in my Zone 8 garden.

Received my order in timely manner. All of the daylilies survived and most bloomed the same year. Would buy from them again.

I have made several orders from Wild's - you can't beat the prices. They have some terrific specials in fall & spring. I've always been pleased with the quality but after ordering from a few other places specializing in daylilies the quality doesn't compare. I guess it's a matter of you get what you pay for. Overall I've been pleased & I'd order again.

Sorry to have something unfavorable to say about this company, but I placed my first order from them and had problems with 2 out of 3 plants! I ordered peonies out of their fall sales brochure ('Glowing Candles' had no 'eyes' at all - the entire top had been cut off, and 'Kansas' had only one root; the other one was totally broken off and dead in the bag). I sent them an email explaining the situation and requesting replacement plants the same day I received the order and haven't heard a peep from them yet.

I have been ordering from them for about 5 years. The peonies and daylilies have been absolutely wonderful. I once ordered a cheap mix of iris and was disappointed that I received 13 iris all of the same variety. However, strangely, those iris are the most vigorous in my garden.

I have ordered their peonies twice. Both shipments had great plants at a great value. By the way, I have found that they have other peonies that are not listed in their catalog that they can provide, which might address some of the concerns mentioned about fewer varieties. Very helpful on the phone. I highly recommend them.

I have ordered extensively from them for the past 3 years; their sale prices are unbeatable. The daylilies, hosta, & iris have been huge; everything not only survived, but thrived, even in VERY poor soil. I was amazed & delighted with them.

I purchased several peonies from Gilbert Wild and Son and was pleasantly surprised when nearly half of them bloomed this year. Can't wait till "Bowl of Beauty" gets established enough to afford an entire arrangement of just that one.

Excellent company. I was so pleased with the accuracy of order, the huge plants that arrived and the ability of them to thrive anywhere I plant them. I am truly a loyal daylily fan and am about to try their Hostas by the Handfuls.

If their labeling is accurate, they sell top quality plants at bargain basement prices. I ordered 6 peonies from their clearance sale this year. I paid $5 apiece, plus very low postage. I received huge healthy plants at just the right time to plant them. So far, so good. They were helpful on the phone, too.

Live in Central Virginia - order all of my daylilies from Gilbert H. Wild. They have been excellent - never lost a one - some have bloomed the first year. Packaging is excellent and I've ordered over a hundred (daylily fanatic). I wait for their 50% off sales which have enabled me to pick up some bargains! Daylilies always arrive on time for my planting season.

Absolutely the best for daylilies. I have ordered MANY (30+) over the past 5 years for our two homes. I've only ever had 1 root not grow! Many bloom the first year. I've had wonderful luck with their product!

I have ordered hundreds of daylilies from them and have been satisfied with all. I also found that if I call in and ask for a large quantity, they will give deep discounts. One of my favorite daylilies of all time, Haunting Melody goes for about $13 at White Flower Farm. I bought about 100 and paid Gilbert Wild about $3.00 each! Great Company. Great Service.

I have ordered daylilies and peonies from Gilbert Wild several times. I was always very happy with the plants. They always sent a free gift. And the sale prices are great. The peony selection is no longer as large as it used to be, but the plants are still very good quality.

I ordered twenty-four plants this summer and am very pleased. All were at least two fans. They added two bonus plants to the order, one was identified and one not.

I ordered iris from Wild's in 1997. I have never received such scrawny rhizomes before. I asked for replacements and got more of the same. Peonies can be quite good and are reasonably priced, but quality and selection seems to have deteriorated in recent years.

My late summer of 1997 order was from several of their ½-price sale catalog advertisements. The daylily roots were huge, like the size of a hand and could have been divided into several smaller plants. Some divisions were of a single size but generally far superior to the divisions offered by the wholesale trade, Oakes Daylilies being the exception with great size also. With a first time $400.00 order GH Wild and Son was a great experience.

I received a mailing of daylilies from them. I was going to order when I remembered seeing their sale ad in one of my garden books. Some of the stuff was half price! So glad I had the brains to check.

I too ordered some of their daylilies and peonies on sale (three of each). The prices were great, but not a single one was what I had ordered. The colors were similar, but not the sizes. I won't bother again.

I ordered 17 daylilies from them at a sale rate of $2.00 each through the horticulture magazine. Every single daylily was huge and in excellent shape and they arrived quickly. I was very pleased.

The plants they send generally of good quality. However, they have been out of stock on several daylilies we ordered both in 1994 and 1995.

Sale prices are excellent. Recently ordered quality plants from a field clearance sale for as little as $1.50 each. Once you start ordering from Wild's, save your old catalogs!!! This is because they have sales every year with minimal descriptions of some of the sale varieties. Usually these varieties are left from previous years so won't always be listed in the most recent catalog. If you have old catalogs you can find these descriptions. I've noticed this with both peonies and daylilies in the Wild's catalogs.
