I purchased all zone 4/5 roses and a great deal of them were Austins and very much hardy for my zone. The kicker is I purchased a total of 25 more roses from other companys & surprisingly the Home Depot and they are all showing green leaves already!!!!!!!!! The catalog for this company looks so lovely but please don't be fooled it is a farse read the negatives from this site before you decide to throw out a hefty chunk of $$$$$$ Happy Spring to all!!!!!!!! I soaked their roots for a couple days and planted them. After two weeks, those two don't look so good. I generally dread having to call customer service at any business, but they were really good at J&P. Without any hassle the offered to replace the two questionable roses within the next week and gave me a 20% discount on anything I wanted to order in the future. |

I just called (within the year guarantee time I thought) and the lady said they do not guarantee over-wintering their products. I said, "then you don't guarantee your products for a year?" She said, oh yes, we guarantee plants for 60 days but not over the winter". HELLOooooooooo ............ She said I could order whatever replacements I would like at 20% off....... oh yeah, sure...... | Neutral | Miramarguy (2 reviews) | On Apr 5, 2005, Miramarguy Hollywood, FL wrote: I'm a bargain shopper, so Jackson & Perkins have always been too pricy for my taste, but after spending a considerable amount of money on garden variety Wal-mart roses ,just to have them die, I decided to see if these J&P roses are everything they make themselves out to be in their catalogs. Last year (2004) I ordered their "cheaper by the dozen" collection and planted them around my yard. Some I planted in pots, others went into the ground where other Wal-mart roses had failed. Four out of the 12 roses died right away, and not having experience with mail order roses I didn't bother calling J&P to have them send me replacements. A year later and three near hurricane misses my garden needed a total overhaul. I wrote off all the roses as dead so I purchased a new collection, this time trying out their new Lavendar Simplicity roses. To my surprise, several of the roses planted last year were still alive! Add to this the fact that the new Simplicity roses grew past any expectations I had. As an experiment I planted a row of the Lavendar Simplicities next to Blue Girl roses from Wal-mart . The Blue Girls have been dwarfed by the Simplicity roses. Furthermore, the Blue Girls have contracted Black Spot where their neighboring Simplicity roses have continued unscathed. I also ordered a new "cheaper by the dozen" collection for thise year (2005) and four of those roses did not fair well in the South Florida weather. This time I called and was met with a well mannered gentleman who promptly made arrangements to replace the roses. On December 1st, 2005, Miramarguy changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: Ok, it's fall now and my garden WENT through two hurricanes this year. I decided to update my post on Jackson and Perkins given that 95% of the roses I ordered (a total over $500 worth) has died. I don't change my rating from Positive to Neutral because the plants died so much as because Jackson and Perkins markets certain roses as "maintenance free" when they are far from "maintenance free". I will give them that roses don't fair well in Florida, so when I'm order the "Cheaper by the Dozen" roses and they don’t live I’m not surprised. However, when I order over three dozen Simplicity roses (lavender, pink, and yellow) from them, I bought them with the idea that I wouldn't have to worry about these roses as much as some of the more particular roses. The plants arrived healthy and I planted them in pots after soaking them in buckets of water. I left them in their pots until they had leafed out and where ready for Florida's unforgiving soil. To their credit, the Lavender Simplicities did well, but the pink and yellow quickly showed signs of problems. What hurts most is that the plants waited until after the 60 day warrantee period to die, and die they did. Again, J&P have a great customer support staff (they should pride themselves of being one of the best) but if they advertise that their roses are so easy they're "maintenance free" (and to the skeptics: I treated my Simplicities with an attitude of anything but maintenance free) and “adapt well to all soils” they should. My advice to anyone who wishes to grow roses in Florida and order from Jackson and Perkins, join your local rose society and investigate the issues between own root roses and those grafted on Fortunia root stock. You might find yourself looking to other mail-order nurseries like Merry Gro Farms and spending more now in order to spend less later. |

My Simplicity roses never lived up to their claims, and the company refused to make good on my order. I started with 6 roses (now down to 2) and each year they put out one unbranched stem with (usually) 2 flowers each summer. I have observed 2 other purchasers of the pink Simplicity rose near me, and their experience has been identical. I live in Zone 5, not that cold, and inasmuch as J & P used to be a NY company, I was expecting a rose that would grow here. |

Of course, we did not buy them mail-order; I am one of those who wants to see what I'm getting. We bought ours in the garden shop at Lowe's. For those of you who are not familiar, Lowe's has a number of stores spread out past the Mississippi, but it is big-time concentrated in the South and Midwest. They are a big-time competitor with Home Depot based out of North Wilkesboro here in North Carolina. But as I said, I cannot comment on their shipping other than from their greenhouses to Lowe's. |

I have six white simplicity roses and six yellow simplicity roses. All of the yellow ones are doing just fine but the white ones turn brown before they even open fully. I have been trying to figure out what to do to correct the problem. After no improvement I called the company. The lady on the phone said she did not know what would cause this to happen. I figured they wouldn't do anything for me since it has been over sixty days. After putting me on hold for a minute or two she came back and told me again that she didn't know what is causing the problem and asked if I would like a replacement. I said "yes but I do not want to try the white again". She said "no problem, I can send you the color of your choice". I told her I would like to try the new purple simplicity roses and she agreed. I received a confirmation number. All I have to do now is wait for the roses to be shipped in March and tear out the white roses. I did loose a season of growing these but they made it up to me by giving me the replacements. Good Customer Service!!! On April 25th, 2005, c2garden added the following: Well, I waited until March and didn't receive the roses. I am giving them a positive because of two reasons. The first reason is because I called to ask where they were and got a very informative lady on the phone. She suggested I give the roses some more time. I did that and they still are not doing too well so I called back and got a refund. The other reason is because I ordered six knockout roses from them and they came quickly and the bare roots look healthy. If I can't get the knockouts to grow well then I will not be ordering from this company again since they are the easiest roses to grow. I have 18 rose bushes that are doing great so I know it is not me. Hopefully all will go well and I can continue to order from them. |

I put my order together on-line, but as I was past shipping dates, I needed to place actual order by phone. I received my order within 10 days. Having only 1 other co. that I've ordered roses from to compare to, I was very pleased with what I received. Root systems are large and healthy, bigger than I expected. 2 roses needed to have some bad branches trimmed but seem fine now. They have been in the ground for a week now, all have new leaves and several are almost bushy. planting in the summer in Hawaii will be a test for them, but looking good so far. I will definitely go back to J&P if I want more roses (end of season specials, of course) |

Most of the roses come on the small side but usually do okay. One rose - High Hopes - grew to 8 ft tall by its 2nd year. Their telemarketing specials are usually a bargain - I was able to get 6 Baby Blanket groundcover roses for $19.99 once and they grew 3x3 ft their first year. They are quick to refund your money if you call right away with a problem, but will try to talk you out of it. On May 31st, 2005, lilaclily changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: Well, all the roses I ordered last year came through with flying colors and no winter protection. So I placed a larger order this year - 23 roses - out of all those, only 2 had to be replaced due to broken canes. They are growing very nicely (I donated the broken ones to a nursing home I pass by often but have not been back to check if they ever recovered). The delphiniums I ordered were damaged in shipping and were quickly replaced (good thing too, none of the originals made it). On May 9th, 2009, lilaclily changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following: I will never, EVER order from this company again. Many of their roses have either died or reverted to rootstock. Considering almost all of my David Austin roses continue to thrive, I know it's not because I don't know what I am doing. They messed up my last order in 2008 which was to be a Mother's Day gift and they repeatedly assured me I would have in time. I didn't. I pushed for a full refund because they were worthless after the fact. I planted them in my garden and most of them did not survive winter 2008. I'm very glad they DIDN'T arrive in time for a gift because I would have been dreadfully embarrassed! This year, I was briefly tempted to order a 12 rose special marked down to $89.99. Until I got to the checkout and noticed shipping was $43. Excuse me? I called Customer Service thinking there was some mistake. I was told by a very indifferent young woman that the shipping is based on the full retail price, not the 12 rose special price. I told her J&P had officially lost me as a customer, to which she replied, "Thanks for calling Jackson and Perkins, have a nice day." Never again!!! |

I have been making more and more garden area for roses every year, but there is a point when I won't have enough room for more, so I don't repeat except for very special ones. I ordered a collection of six roses on line plus several other roses and another collection. When they arrived I was surprised to find two orders for the collection of six. I stuck them all in the ground thinking that I would just keep them, but I decided I would have to forego some roses I wanted if I doubled all of these. I called and explained what happened. The woman on the line said that I had ordered two collections. I said that my invoice print out only showed one and only charged for one. I could hear the hesitation in her voice, probably thinking I was trying to scam them and she left the phone for a fairly long time. When she came back she had an offer for me. If I would donate the six roses to a charity or school etc. and send a letter from them, J&P would refund my money. I thought this was such a good idea. It really pleased me because now I will have space for more, a school will have some beautiful roses for everyone to enjoy and J&P have a tax write-off. A Great Solution! |

However, a credit was always given to me for these. I received more credits than plants. I'm 68 years old and the waste of a season is very important to me. I stopped buying plants altogether, and restricted my purchases to arbors, trellises and misc. garden items. The first arbor (over $100.00) fell apart, and I opened a nasty cut on my leg where the hardware did not fit properly and had a sharp protrusion at the bottom. No one even responded to my complaint for either replacement or refund. I later ordered a brass memorial marker (for $35.00)which promptly fell apart and could not be used. Again, no one responded to my complaint in any form. When I finally reached someone by telephone, the representative was rude, accusing, and treated me as if I were generally senile. No satisfaction was offered or received. Now I use Jackson & Perkins catalogs for entertainment. I look at the pictures to get ideas, but then I order from someone else. |

Arkansas will put a severe test on roses, with very high heat and humidity combined with drouth in the summer. These roses thrived and put out beautiful blossoms. One little problem I see is that they hang a metal plant ID tag on with wire. I remove those tags from the leader and place it on a side branch to prevent possible girdling and killing the plant.
