BUYERS BEWARE! This company sells really bad plants and will not refund your $$ unless you have retained the ORIGINAL shipping label. On 4/22/03 I ordered a walking stick and 4 hosta. My VISA was charged before the plants were shipped. On arrival the plants were wrapped in plastic and were wet, moldy, and had a strong musty odor. I took a chance and planted them, but none thrived. The hosta turned into mush. Requested merchandise credit on 6/8/03. Was told, "in accordance with our guarantee, simply return the ORIGINAL shipping label." This I did not have (save), but exaplained to them that I had the ORIGINAL e-mail order confirmation that contained the same information as the shipping label. Telephoned Customer Service 7/16/03 to again request refund and was given the same run around. This company states as policy to return the original shipping label for merchandise credit, and by the same token their company policy states, "we will keep the shipping label on file in our office for the year the warranty is good for." I GIVE UP!!!

I also received my order very late and immediately planted them, (even though some were already crumbling)After several weeks couldnt find a trace of half of the order, and I wrote to them as per their instructions including the shipping label and they sent the label back to me saying they were dormant. Since when does dead and rotting mean dormant? Since then, almost all of the order is dead. I e-mailed them and got told send label in etc etc and I said I already did that and you people returned it, so I will take other steps. It is listed at thecomplaintstation.com if anyone wants to add to that. Also, contacted BBB in Bloomington. I think next will be the Federal Trade Commision, if I can.

When you go there in person they have a table of catalogs from several different companies THEY do their mail order business, and you write down the catalog items. My next step in the Better Business Bureau or a Mail Order Fraud

It was very clear the label and the letter explaining what I was shorted. The Magnolias are growing beautiful with many flowers on it this Spring. The Purple Plum Leaf Shrubs are flourishing beautifully and are about 4-5 feet tall now. They are very rich in color. The Snow Ball Bushes were growing very rapidly. A matter of fact they grew so big I had to keep pruning them. Some of the orderly Privet Hedges did die. The Hybrid Willows did not fair too well. Only 1 out of 10 survived. I think it's my fault for putting them in the incorrect spot where the soil might have had a poor drainage problem. Only 1 out of 6 of the Mock Orange Shrubs survived possibly I put them into a poor soil mixture (clay soil). But, otherwise the experience was pretty good. I followed the directions on how to plant everything. I planted them a day or two after I received them. I also soaked the roots in water for a few hours before planting. The customer service was helpful. I think I would order from them again.

When I called the company I almost told them to cancel my order (based on all the comments). Less then a week later after my call my order arrived. I was pleasantly suprised! I only have one item that looks iffy - the other items arrived very healthy and in great shape. Great prices but slow shipping - so far so good on the growing too- I would take my chances and order again.

The company's policy of shipping "dormant" plants is a joke. We received 180 crown vetch, and NOT ONE was actually alive. With 48 Blue Mist shrubs, only three ever developed a single leaf. Of everything we ordered, maybe five percent of it actually grew for a single season.

The one year guarantee is another joke, as all they do is take their time and ship you dead "dormant" plants. There's no refund for anything, and after planting over 200 dead plants from them, that's all I'd accept.

I received all 20 of my plants today. Someone who has never planted something with bare roots before might have been disappointed upon opening the package. I ordered trees and shrubs and they all arrived bare root with little greenery. Having planted all my roses with just bare roots and no greenery- I know that bare root plantings can be busting with growth after a few weeks of dormancy. A small bare root rose that I planted at the end of last summer currently has climbed all the way to the top of my 12 foot front lattice and has about 10 roses in bloom, not to mention the 5 that I clipped off for a vase in the house.

All of the ordered plants and trees are 2 to 3 feet tall except for the hibiscus. The hibiscus have tons of thick roots so, I'm sure they will be fine. The Forsythia doesn't look dormant. It has a good bit of greenery and is really thick. I played the lottery with ordering 3 tree bargains. My tree bargains are red twig dogwood and smoke trees. They even sent me an extra bargain tree, plus a free gift of shamrock bulbs, tomato seeds and vine peach seeds.

The web-site said to allow 2 to 3 weeks to process the order and they will be shipped as the order was received. I received my order in exactly 4 weeks. I would have been content waiting until the beginning of June for the huge assortment of ultra-cheap plants that I ordered. Seriously, I was scared that it wasn't a legitimate business since I was able to purchase 20 trees and shrubs for $20 with only a $7 shipping fee. I was half expecting all the money to be deleted from my checking account. I was not. I have about a 75% success rate with anything I plant so if I get that from these shrubs and trees- I will be ecstatic. I'll keep you updated on how they do. At this point, I'm really pleased and feel like I found a great resource for all my future gardening.

Happy Planting- Natalie

I received my plants and they are just as I hoped. The trees are small but the catalog said 2 feet and that's what they were. For anyone upset that they couldn't return their order because they didn't have the original packing slip I read in at least 3 different places on the package, packing materials, and instructions, that in order to make any returns they must be accompanied by the "original packing slip". The plants are all in a dormant stage - they aren't dead.

I have ordered plants from Plantron division companies several times. My experience has been one of mixed performance, depending on the kind of plant ordered.

Generally, their fruit trees arrive in good condition and perform well after transplanting.

In 2002, I received 9 apple trees from Four Seasons. Only one of them died after transplanting, never having shown a budding shoot. The other eight apples began growing well, through three were set back by deer before I began protecting them with wire cages and pepper wax. As of now, these eight trees continue to be growing satisfactorily.

This year (2003), I ordered two 5-in-1 apple trees from Plantron. Although it is too soon to issue a final judgment on their prospects, each of these trees has put out several growing shoots, and I don't see any sign of them failing.

Of six tree and bush cherries ordered from Four Seasons in 2002, four survived the first year and are still growing.

This year I ordered four Manchurian apricot trees from Plantron. All four of them are growing ok so far.

Plantron is, in my opinion, a decent source for fruit trees. However, they are not as reliable with the quality of their nut-tree and evergreen tree merchandise.

In 2002, I ordered and received three almond trees from Plantron, of which two died after transplanting and were replaced this year (again with almond trees from Plantron). So far, the replacements are growing ok and show no signs of failure.

In 2002, I ordered two pecan trees from Plantron. Both died after transplanting. I have not yet ordered replacements.

This year, I ordered three butternut trees from Plantron. One of them has shown a growing shoot. The other two remain featureless sticks. It may be too soon to pass judgment on them, as it is only April 20th.

In 2002, I ordered four hazelnuts from Plantron. One of them continues to struggle. The growth rate is bad, but the plant is not dead. This year, I ordered two replacement hazelnuts, and one has already budded a growing shoot. I'm dubious about the other replacement, however.

In 2002, I ordered three English Carpathian walnut trees from Plantron, and all of them grew but were so severely attacked by deer that their first year's growth was wasted. It is too early to pass judgment on their continued viability this year, though one of them has put forth a new growing shoot. I don't blame Plantron for the deer attack, of course.

In 2002, I ordered 60 Colorado Blue Spruce trees and received 59. Probably someone there miscounted. But I only needed 56 of the trees, and had three left over to give to a neighbor. But the trees arrived in dehydrated condition, and though I watered them, only one survived the summer. That one continues to grow at the edge of my yard today. I have decided to replace the evergreen border to my driveway with American Arborvitae from a different company.

I do not hesitate to recommend Plantron companies for fruit trees. But they seem to be a poor source for nut trees, and a careless shipper of evergreens.

Jerry Abbott

On May 24, 2003, JerryAbbott changed their rating and added the following: My replacement nut trees, including two pecans, ordered from Plantron are OK. Also, all three of the butternut trees that I had planted earlier have sprouted new foliage.

Two of the ten chestnut trees that I ordered last year are finally showing signs of new growth, and a third might do so soon (it's showing a tiny red nubbin on the stick that often precedes the first leaves).

Overall, I haven't had many serious problems with Plantron companies, aside from those 55 dead blue spruce.

A minor beef that I do have involves their sitting back and collecting multiple shipping and handling fees ($7.25 per order) and then sending it all to me in one package.

While I wouldn't call Plantron a first-rate operation, they're not as bad as some of the other ratings made me think they were.

We moved into our newly built home almost 3 years ago. We ordered plants from maybe a dozen different vendors. Our experience with Four Seasons has been the most unsatisfactory and frustrating one imaginable. We ordered in the neighborhood of $300-400 plants. First, it took forever for these plants to arrive and when they did they were often nearly or completely dead. A large order of one plant was substituted for another (smoke bushes) without our consent because they were out of what we ordered. (Bait and switch) Several plants never arrived. We tried to contact this company by phone to discuss our concerns but they had no toll free phone number and the cost of the entire long distance calling process was entirely born by us. After one year, plants that had not shown any signs of life were dug up by my wife who sent them back to the company with shipping labels and a long letter of explanation. It tooks months and months to finally extract a refund coupon from this company. The refund naturally did not cover the plants that died and which we could no longer find the shipping labbels for even though the company admitted over the phone that their records showed exactly what we had ordered.
Finally, the next spring 2002, we sent the refund coupon and cover letter to Four Seasons and ordered new plants. Approximately 1/10th of the order was delivered and we have heard nothing further. I just (on 2/24/03) wrote to the company to ask "what now" and got an automatic e-mail response that said something like .....send them a letter and shipping labels for the plants in question. Well how does one do that when the plants in question never were sent to us? Plus they now have (through previous correspondence we have had with them) all our shipping lables so NOW we have NOTHING to pursue this any further. We are not going to deal with this sham of a company any further because it does nothing but frustrate us for nothing in return. If you are thinking of ordering from this company please, please, please do not... save yourself a LOT of money and frustration and run... don't walk to a different supply house/firm. Our loss is now approximatley $100 in dead plants, $75 in undelivered plants plus months of failed correspondence with indifferent individuals, approximately $20 in phone calls, $7 to ship dead plants back to Four Seasons and 3 years worth of frustration with a company which couldn't care less. But then, it didn't turn out so poorly. I mean, sure, many of the plants arrived in poor shape, but for the price, I didn't really expect that much. Out of probably 20 trees/shrubs, approximately 5-7 have survived... and it wasn't really all that surprising because the things that died, I rather expected to die because they weren't quite right for my soils and we had a really bad drought this year. But the sand cherry and the forsythia and the lilacs did fine (I knew they should grow here) and then the five roses were pretty decent (four of five were definitely alive)... but they died due to dog exposure (MY fault). Of course, it took about 9-10 weeks to get my order, and I will NOT order from them again, but my experience was not completely 100 percent awful. You get what you pay for!

Thankfully I did not spend as much as some I have read about. However the plants were inferior and all but the hydrangeas have died. If they make it through winter it will be a miracle. the hydrangeas were planted in good soil and fertilized as directed and the growth was minimal.. I would never order another product from this company but would like to see this companies operation some day for myself, just to satisfy my own curiousity. The old saying applies here "BUYER BEWARE"

There are about a half dozen "nurseries" shipping from the same warehouse and I would not give a penny for any one of'em...plants very often arrive half dead and do not survive...oh yes, if you complain loud enough they will replace and very often with plants that are no better......there is better luck with the shrubs than with perennials but even then you 'takes a chance' HW

The very worst rubbish I have ever seen........plants were replaced with equally bad rubbish....am now waiting for another replacement....must admit my hopes are not high and the main reason for this replacement is so that they do not get away totally scot free.

Yorkshireman....60 years plus experience...so why did I buy in the first place....to check 'em out.

Like most folks probably, I get several catalogs with aninternet link to this site: http://www.cometobuy.com that is redirected then based on the code on the back of the particular book you have.

By chance, I choose Four Seasons among others and before I knew about this watchdog site.

In early May, I placed two orders -- one for myself and one for family members in another state. Seven weeks later, I hadn't heard or received anything. When I contacted the company with explicit details about my order, I received this curt reply with the word "after" written in bold red and a real customer service person identified merly as "ss" (as in bad service is a secret here?):

"It typically takes approximately 3 weeks to process an order AFTER we receive it.

Then they are shipped out in the order they are received and delivery through the mail takes between 7-14 days.

Thank you,
Customer Service

ss"

Both orders arrived shortly after this to my address. My family members never received anything.

Of the dozen or so plants that came, four have not made it, and I won't be bothering to ask for replacements or a refund. Given my own experience and the testimonials here, I think it would be a waste of time.

I'll never order from another company without checking here first, and I do wonder how companies like this continue to exist.

I ordered $130 in plants last fall. When they arrived, they were moldy and slimy -- obviously dead. I called immediately and asked for a refund, but was told I could not get a refund till spring, and only then if I planted e everything and it did not survive the winter. I planted, mulched and irrigated about 75 trees, none of which showed any sign of life this spring. When I called, I was issued a 2-for-1 coupon -- If I spend another $130 (foolishly) with these con artists, they will match it with another $130 worth of possibly dead plants. I asked again for a refund and sent a letter explaining why. That was 2 months ago, and I heard nothing. Today I called, and they told me that the request had been denied.

I plan to file a complaint with the postal service office listed here.

By the way, I find that Gurney's has comparable prices, much better viability here in Colorado, and nice customer service people.

I placed an order in August of 2001. In mid-September (9/25/01), I was told that they were shipped already on 2 dates in mid-September. I believe these were the 16th and 19th. I received my order in mid-October. Since the plants were shipped in a "dormant state", I didn't expect much growth in 2001. I figured I was getting a good deal when I placed the order. The person taking the order was very friendly. Fast forward to 2002, not much is still happening. I have sent letters on June 17, 2002 and July 8, 2002. Funny, my letters did not get returned either. It is now July 19th. I have not received a letter, or an acknowledgement from this company. I had waited until June to see if anything would come up. I sure wish I had read the comments in this site before placing my order. I did not see a specific address for customer service, but I followed the directions and included the original shipping labels. If I don't get a response soon, I will be seeking restitution.

I ordered quite a bit of material from 4 seasons this year. I had placed small orders over the past several years with pretty good results. My goal was to plant an orchard and berries for my children and grandchildren. Understand that I have two degrees in horticulture so I generally know what I am doing when it comes to plant care. However, I have not received part of my order and it is now July. I have been unable to get anyone to answer the phone or it is constantly busy. Out of the 3 types of strawberries I ordered (25 each) only 50 were shipped and of those 50 only 21 plants have survived. I ordered 6 forsythia and 6 bridal shower spirea. None grew. I ordered 4 blueberry bushes. None have arrived. I ordered raspberries and blackberries that have never arrived. I ordered two laurels and one came covered in spider mites and died several days later in spite of treatment. The other is barely hanging on, but I am still working on it. I ordered 7 grapes of different varieties. I think two might survive. Overall, I am totally disgusted. Four Seasons is part of a conglomerate group of nurseries. None of them is reputable. If you see one of those newspaper type catalogs, throw it out. Don't waste your money, your time, or your precious planting season on this junk.

My friend and I decided to place a trial order with Four Seasons simply because the prices were so low. We did receive our product, June 25th, although I'm not sure when she ordered it. The 6 hibiscus roots seem to be viable with a few inches of green shoot. I planted my 3 today, June 26th, in Northeast SD. We will see.

Placed an order over 4 weeks ago, still nothing. Sent email, they responded with it takes 2-3 weeks to process order, but they were real happy about cashing the money order (won't do that again). Sent email to them today, telling them I want my stuff or refund my money (can't even find an order number). I don't want to hear about climate shipping, by the time it gets here the season will be over anyway. I've learnt my lesson. I'll stick with the well known nursery companies that I grew up with.
