In response to the last entry. I also bought over 100.00 worth of plants this year. I ordered the 4th of May and still have yet to recieve it. How convinent. I will never order from them again. I did recieve a partial order of my strawberries and ferns. All of which are dead seeing that it took 3 weeks to get to me. I also threw my shipping label away. However when I called I actually got a sweetheart of a lady named "Jenny" that told me to just get a copy of the purchase from my creditcard and make a copy of what i ordered and send that it. I am definately going to do. Hopefully you could do this also. GOOD LUCK

UPDATE-
I have been in contact with Faith (who I might add is very on the ball) she is trying to make everything right with my order. Even though they havent gotten to me yet, I truly appreciate her effort to make me happy. I will let you know how things get to me.

I think this site can be used best if we just state what our problems are and let their technical group contact us to get it resolved. It sure makes it easier than trying to get threw on the phone. I am so far pleased. I just hope my plants get here the same way.

I ordered from this company because i was getting an extremely good deal for these plants. Yes its not going to go perfect, however with my limited budget, I have to take what I can get. When you love gardening as much as I do, I look for the bargins.

I have dealt with Four Seasons Nursery for years and have had no major issues until this summer. I spent lots of money this year putting in a new patio, stone borders, violets, and climbing white rose bushes. My entire garden is blue, voilet and white. When I saw the ad in Four Seasons Nursery for blue moon roses, I jumped at the chance and placed my order -- blue roses are such a rarity that I had to have them. I got my roses and was thrilled. Planted them according to instructions and they are growing great. My problem with them is that the "blue moon" roses that i orderred are not blue but, in fact, pink. lol. Anyone else have similar issues? Guess next time I should order pink and maybe I will get blue. Once they started budding and I saw they were growing, I threw out my original packing slip so I guess I'm just stuck with these awful pink roses that just don't belong in my blue, lilac and white garden. Way to go Four Seasons Nursery. I won't be orderring from them again.

Happy summer to all.

My husband called a week later and they told him to wait another week and that they were too busy. We have since contacted the Better Business Bureau, Illinois Attorney General and our lawyer because all we want is a refund of our money and they are refusing to do it. I've done business with 4 Seasons for about 5 years, and so far have no real complaints. The initial survival rate for trees is very good if you baby them a little at first. Sometimes to the point of potting them for the first season ans etting them out the next. I have Hybrid poplars, Rose of Sharon, Pee Gee Hydrangeas, and others that are 3 or 4 years old and doing very well. The other plants have a survival rate of about 50% for me, but as of yet I've had little trouble getting a satisfactory replacement. Their big attraction is low prices, and as with any discount outlet, some difficulties are to be expected. I love paying less and can deal with the minor hassles

Purchased several items totaling about 90 dollars. About half of the plants were dead. Several plants ordered were not even shipped. Their descriptions seem highly suspect. For example, I ordered 6, three year old, blueberries but they were clearly not three year olds. 4 of them were dead and looked like brown tree twigs. The other two were green but barely living. Why did I order from them? I found this review site after I ordered. I tried to return my items for a refund via Fedex and they told me that the stated address 1706 Morrissey Dr in Bloomington, IL is an ad agency. I shipped it anyway because that was the address on the shipping label. I will dispute charges with credit card company if refund is not given.

Many of our trees, shrubs and perennials are shipped bare root and dormant. Bare root plant material is dug during its dormant period to minimize the stressful effects of shipping and storage. This is one of the safest and best ways to ship live plant material. In addition, since the plant is not actively growing, there is no need to increase the shipping costs by sending dirt unnecessarily through the mail. Because they are shipped dormant and do not have green leaves, they may appear "dead" on arrival. They simply need to be soaked in water for a few hours or overnight and planted. Typically dormant material will come out of dormancy and show signs of life within 6 weeks of planting if the weather is warm.

The customer's posting is not clear regarding the exact situation with his plants and we have sent a d-mail requesting more information.

Of course, if the plants are in fact dead, the customer can take advantage of our one-year replacement guarantee. They could also get a refund by mailing back the plant material within 14 days of receipt with their request."

Last year, I ordered 2 Paulownia trees and 4 vines (I can't remember the name of the vines). The vines were packaged well, but the trees were mailed in a plastic green bag and upon opening the bags one of the trees were broken. The roots were still good so I went ahead and planted everything. Though my dog ate one vine the other 3 started to grow then eventually stopped. They got to a whopping 6 inches even though it was suppose to be a fast grower. They are now all dead. The 2 trees I was patient with even though these were suppose to be fast growing trees. They looked like sticks in the ground. I waited ample time to see if they would grow and eventually they just died. I asked for a replacement of the trees but not the vines because at the time the vines were still alive. The trees were now on sale and I asked for 6 trees instead of 2 because at the sale price the amount was equivalent to what I had paid. Surprisingly they sent me six. They died too. I never bothered to ask for vine replacements because I figured they would die too. I chalked it up to a bad experience with this particular company and decided to just not give them my business again. By the way, 2 other red maple trees I ordered from Arbor Day and planted at the same time grew and are doing well. I do not recommend this company.

It is impossible to tell from the limited information provided exactly why this happened, but there are MANY factors that could have caused their demise, the most unlikely being faulty plant material since they did initially come out of dormancy and died later."

Spring 2005... I ordered 6 blueberries, 26 hybrid poplars, 3 weeping willows, 4 elderberries, 2 corkscrew willows, 4 lilacs, and 3 hydrangeas...all for less than $100.

Yes they looked like dead sticks when they came in the green plastic bag. But I soaked the roots in warm water, planted them, and almost everything grew VERY well.

I thought for sure the elderberries were dead...each one was a VERY dry stick about 6" long. But by the end of the summer all 4 were 5 feet tall x 3 feet wide and very healthy.

I accidentilly killed the hydrangeas before I could plant them (left them out in hot sun without water...oops!), but they were green and healthy (and small) upon arrival.

The only thing that grew poorly were my lilacs...only 1 really grew... but I believe that was due to poor soil where I planted them. I also had 1 out of 26 hydrid poplars die, although it initially grew several leaves. The other 25 are between 4' and 6' tall now.

Here's my thinking folks...this company (and all of its Plantron affiliates) sell plants for DIRT CHEAP. So yes, the plants will be small, shipping will be bad, customer service will be bad, and it is easy to feel like you got ripped off. But, since I have a limited budget, I am willing to put up with it. I plan on ordering again this spring...we'll see how it turns out this year! (My 2¢)

Boy, too bad I hadn't read the reviews before purchasing plants from Four Seasons Nursery. It's a great dishonor to reputable plant suppliers to even call them a nursery.

I ordered three holly trees, a rosemary and two climbing shell plants. The plants I rec'd were poorer than anything I have ever bought at a nursery. I would never have GIVEN away anything that looked like these plants for FREE!! I've purchased much nicer plants from garage sales. The hollies were mere sticks, the rosemary was dead, and the shell plants were sticks with green mush attached.

I called Four Seasons right away after rec'ving the hollies. Like other customers, I found that the "customer no-service" people were extremely rude and of little help. When I told the " no-service representative" that I was going to dispute this on my credit card, she said "Go ahead. It won't do you any good because Visa has already paid us and we have your money". This arrogance really p------d me off! How dare they! They make promises and claims in their advertising that they have no intention of keeping.

I did dispute the claim with my visa. Visa says that I cannot support my side of the story even though I've sent them all the documentation I have, along with a personal letter explaining all I've gone through to try to rectify this problem. The bottom line is that the "no-customer service" rep was right, a customer has no rights.

I am finding some amount of solice by being able to scream my feelings to others. I only wish that I had had the foresight to check into this company before I jumped at the "great??" prices. I have dealt with Jackson & Perkins, Wayside and Whitewater Farms without any problems. Just this year I have purchased from J&P. When my rose was not growing to my satisfaction, ALL IT TOOK WAS ONE PHONE CALL to get my problem corrected. I now have a replacement rose that is doing beautifully. I also purchased a red buckeye from Wayside last fall. When I called to say that I didn't think it had made it through the record cold Ohio winter, a new buckeye arrived the next week!

I'll absolutely NEVER do business with this company or any of it's aliases again. I am telling everyone I know not to do business with them as well.

After reading the other experiences on Dave's Garden website, I feel that I have been lucky to get away with a $40 lesson. I'll make sure that this company loses that much and more by being an advocate for my gardening friends by letting them know just how dishonest this company is.

My experience with Four Seasons Nursery has been a disaster. Many people work in their gardens to relax; we gardeners receive a great deal of satisfaction from watching the plants we have tended thrive. If this is your goal, DO NOT purchase plants from this company. I purchased 60 (yes, 60!) Arctic Flame Sub Zero rose that were described in their catalogue as "fiery red". The first bud bloomed yesterday--it is a neon pink. Rather than the traditional red rose hedge I planned, I now have a shocking pink spectacle that has to be dug up. Their return policy is such that the entire season will go by before they get around to replacing these plants, leaving insufficient time for the new roses to establish themselves before winter.
I suspect that they have such a time consuming return policy to discourage customers from pursuing efforts to rectify their errors. Other companies such as Spring Hill and Jackson Perkins attempt to resolve customer complaints within days. As I have well over $1000 invested in these roses and their planting, I believe they will find that this practice will be unsuccessful in my case.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully managed to get this company to take responsibility for the problems it has created.

I received my order on May 27. I opened the green plastic bag and took out my bare-root twigs. They were bundled together which gave them added strength to survive the brutal shipping. I figured I'd try to soak them in water and SuperThrive (5 ml/gal) to see if they'd given up the ghost.

Six days later all five trees are still soaking and are greening up beautifully. I'm going to plant them today.

I understand that non-woody plants couldn't be treated this way. I think this method of shipping is totally inappropriate for tender plants, but I got exactly what I ordered and I'm happy.

Of course I was shocked by the size of the plants all were small, but you get what you pay for no? in my order were 4 Kwanzan cherry trees, all bareroot and very dead looking. They are all leafing out now and at over $300 each for fullsize trees I will wait until these grow. 7 subzero roses came and I had to wait over a week before planting them. I thought that I would loose them because of the wait, they stayed dormant in a cool room and now are sprouting in the garden. I did loose a hellebore, seaholly, and have not received 8 redbud trees yet. But so far am happy with the order. Again, you get what you pay for. I have paid much more for plants from Park seed and have recieved potted plants in poor quality and insect infestations from them, yet I keep going back so I will be going back to 4 seasons knowing what to expect.

I placed an order with this company and did receive my order in the time frame they stated with the exception of one plant(still waiting on it). The plants were in poor condition and I planted them the same day in new Miracle Grow potting soil. Most of the plants are now dead not dormat! I haven't bothered to call cause don't want the hassel of more dead plants when there are other places to buy from that send good ones. I only spent 40.00 I figure it was a lesson learned. I will never buy anything from them again and they lost a good customer cause I'm purchasing more stuff today.

I recently received an order from this company. I was not aware of their bad reputation nor about the other companies they are affiliated with. I may not have ordered from them had I know, but this one order was received in fine shape and all are growing.

I ordered one fruit tree, and some decorative grasses. They came looking dormant, but all are greening up nicely.

I may give them another chance in the future.

I have had a very positive experience with Four Seasons Nursery (4SN). I ordered from them last spring (2004). If you read the catalog or the website you will see that they don't immediately send out your order. They wait until its time to plant in your region. So I waited.

I received the package and was a little taken aback by the twigs inside but I FOLLOWED THE PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS. I ordered 8 Rose of Sharon bushes, 2 smoke trees, 8 russian olives, 3 screen poplars, 2 yucca plants, and one thula green giant. The yuccas looked pretty rough and died within days. Most everything else took off. THe green giant just held steady.

I held onto my shipping label and this spring (2005) and took stock of what had died: 2 yuccas, 2 poplars, 1 smoke tree and 1 russian olive. I sent the label back with a note and a few weeks later I received replacements. They sent me 3 extra Russian olives!

I got all of those plants, with shipping for $34. All are growing, and I couldn't be happier. My one smoke tree grew almost 5' last year!

I would not hesitate to order more trees or shrubs from 4SN.

OK what can i say... HOLY CRAP.. Why dont we investigate companys before we place our orders. how stupid are we all? well i too placed an order for four seasons on 4-17-2005 3 days later they took the whole total amount of 113.90 from my credit card. i was shocked that they had ever plant in stock and that they all were coming at the same time, i mean thats why i was charged the whole total RIGHT? well the follow day i recieved a catalog in the mail called Royal Dutch. How pretty. WOW. HMMMMM wait one sec. this catalog looks the same as Four seasons catalog. something isnt right here. you know when you get that feeling. deep down inside you have been screwed over. i came to the internet and looked up the company name on google and found somewhere where someone said to go to garden watchdog and look up the companys feedback before buying. OMG they have that..... i was there. i looked up four seasons and found that it had 78% negative feedback, i looked up Royal Dutch it has 90% negative. then i clicked on Plantron which is highlighted and it shows This company is affiliated with 10 companies. all ten companys have something to do with each other. i believe they are all owned by the same person. three of the address are on the same street. Two i believe have the same phone number. this is disgusting.. how sick. well now we know why he is Rich. Shame on you Richard Owens is Correct as someone else wrote. Well this is what i have decided to do. i called the company but feared i would get no where or screwed even harder. Can you believe i got a machine that told me they would be out of work on this day due to a power outage. the message was 2 weeks OLD. I think they are in the office NOW cause they sure dont have a problem taken my credit card. well i didnt leave a message as i dont want my order messed up or my credit card charged twice. i went to the Illinois attorney General website i have her name which is Lisa Madigan and the number is 1-800-243-0618. There is a Form you can fill out and print then mail in with your complaint and your reciept, pictures.. anything. and everything you can think of to make a good case for you. only send copies though and save everything you have sent. On the form it asks did you call your credit card company to dispute the charge. well i went ahead and did that. i called and i told them what was happening. now they are sending me forms to fill out and mail back in. But even if i get my money back i'm still calling the attorney general. This is BS. and i cant believe a man thinks he can get away with This. you want to know why he is still in business, cause noone as the time or patience to take him on. well i'm the wife of a military solider who is deployed right now, and to keep me busy i was going to make a Beauitful garden in the back yard. Now seeing how i dont have my plants. and i'm out 113.90 I guess i will have to find something to do in my spare time like maybe a LAWSUIT. Hope you are reading this is you pathetic piece of ****. Thats fine i got your number. well people all i can say is i will keep in touch and let you know if it goes right for me or not. i'm going to wait until i get those papers from my credit card company and then fill those out and mail them in too to the attroney General. Also the Credit card company told me that when i send them the plants back take them to the post office and add a green return to sender slip that the company has to sign for when they recieve them back. This way its all tracked. and you can even send copies of that to the attorney General. Good luck to everyone

I ordered merchandise from these people on 3/27/05. I received my order, short 1 item, and saw the adjustment on the shipping label. No problem. I then decided that the Tri-Tek pole (for the martin house) was too expensive through them and returned via UPS. According to UPS, 4 Seasons received the pole on 4/8. This week I started receiving a duplication of my order. Called my cc and 4 Seasons has duplicated the charge to my card! I called 4 Seasons. 'Christie' would not get a supervisor on the line, would not agree to an internal investigation, (suggested I investigate myself,) has not received the pole I sent back, and would give me absolutely no satisfaction, only a run around. Since it was an internet order to start with, she says it is impossible that is was their error. I was on the line with this woman for 40 minutes (placed on hold twice) and got absolutely nowhere. I am taking other action, and will not rest on this abomination any time soon. I have never dealt with such a disreputable company in my life. How do they stay in business? Any help out there?

I have ordered plants from around the US. I have had many dealings with various companies. These guys should be renamed dead plants dot com. I am a semi professional in this field. When you ship 2 of the same species of a plant and 1 is vibrant and healthy and the other wilted you KNOW that when you bag them. I have also "caught" them in deceiving acts such as mailing out mailers that use a different company name BUT the same address. Logically one would think the rational here is that if they (the public)were gullable once they will be gullible again. This company needs to be shut down, I will go on record as stating that these are the worst vendors I have run across in this field.

I am listing this as neutral as I have only just received my first order and, as listed above, they are "dead" or very dormant as the paperwork states. I have potted them up and will wait and see how they do. They do look sad sticking up out of the dirt!

HOWEVER... they arrived in a long flat plastic bag. No packing material to protect them from handling by the mail carrier or the sorters. Even the burning bush that is potted had nothing around it and was out of the pot! I've seen some tremendous packaging come from places like Companion Plants and Spring Hill. I will use them in the future, regardless of how these plants do. Oh, and I have the shipping label, just in case!

On May 20th, 2005, BassetMom changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following:

Well, three of the four never came to life. After one phone call, a letter with shipping label, and yet another phone call, I waited weeks for the replacements. Those arrived, in the same terrible packaging are are just as dead. No way these will make it either.

Given the wonderful service and immediate replacement by other nurseries, why bother with this nonsense? Oh, and it may be that you get what you pay for but I paid for live plants. Inexpensive or not, they should be alive when they arrive.

Ha!
Our details are so much the same as all the negatives posted here.

CLEARLY MANY OF THE POSTIVES ARE BEING WRITTEN BY A FOUR SEASON STAFF OR OWNER AS THEY ALL BLAME THE GARDENER AND SAY THE SAME TYPE OF EXCUSES.

I hope anyone reading these posts remembers that the GUILTY con artists are quite able to come here and post postive remarks just to be able to scam us all a bit more. Why not show isp 's to let everyone see where the remarks are coming from?
You can bet that firms who get lots of negatives and who are really out to scam people, will surely take the time to write more lies just to sucker newbies.
SHAME ON YOU RICHARD OWENS.
You are a disgrace.

Dear Readers,

I have had a good experience dealing with the Four Seasons Company. I have ordered numerous times from them and Yes there were a few times plants came "Dead" but I read their instructions about keeping the receipt and they promptly and graciously sent me more plants until I was satisfied. On several occasions they also sent me "more:" plants then I had ordered. I found their prices very competitive and their product to be as stated. I understand people becoming upset about companies but I found them to be reputable. Just read their instructions and follow them by keeping the original packing slip and they "will" send you more plants until you are satisfied. I noticed many of the complaints were from customers who lived a great distance from Illinois this could be the reason for the plants dying. I would suggest you buy from a nursery close to your home location to prevent this from happening,. That is what I have done and it has been to my satisfaction.

Last year I ordered several sets of flowers from this company. They arrived mostly dead, but I planted them hoping they would revive. Every plant they sent me died in the end. When I called them to discuss a refund or exchange I was told I would have to send them a copy of my receipt along with the dead plants in the original shipping box. I have never heard of such a thing. All the other garden companies I have dealt with replace or refund with no questions asked, and nothing has to be returned, plus they have a record of what I ordered, I do not have to provide one. I did not have a receipt and did not save the box. Since I had gotten most of the plants for practically nothing (on sale), I did not bother pursuing a refund as it was not worth the hassle I would endure. I will not order from them again.

BEWARE!!!!! This is a prime example of "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." I will never, ever make this mistake again. Items arrived either dead, or barely clinging to life. Some were rotted, others were dried up, and the ones with any sign of life needed to be rushed to a PICU (plant intensive care unit), and even then the outlook was grim. Trying to get a refund or exchange was a real bother, and finally after over 6 months of waiting, I received my replacements....and guess what they looked like? They were all in seriously sad shape or dead. I don't know if I am even going to bother trying to get a refund....I think they count on people not having the patience to put up with this sort of going back and forth. Guess I'll just cut my losses and consider this a lesson learned. How do they sleep at night?
