I have had problems in the past with company but, they seem to be humping it with the orders for me this year and even quickly did a replacement on dead product from fall last year that shipped within a month. Nearly every day I get a package from the smiling mailman and healthy looking stock. I applaud them this year.

I e-mailed Michigan Bulb Co. about replacement plants. I had ordered plants last year and planted them as soon as I received them. I never saw them after that, as they disappeared into my garden. If I do not receive confirmation about replacing the plants in a couple more days, I will be back to change my rating of this company.

I have been ordering plants from this company for a few years and I have had all kinds of experience - sometimes I was not happy with the plants I got, sometimes I had to wait too long for the customer service to react to my emails. But every time sooner or later all my problems were settled in a satisfactory way - I got replacements and the representatives of the customer service always found a way to make me happy. Now I never hesitate to order from them and I am sure that plants will be healthy though small and the prices not too high. I recommend this company to all patient gardeners who can wait for the plants to grow and for all kinds of problems to be settled.

I've had mixed results in the past with this company. Recently, after a heatwave, I contacted them for replacements on plants I've had for a few years.
Their Customer Service department was prompt, courteous, and very helpful. Less than a week later the credit vouchers for the plants they no longer carry were in my hand, and the replacement orders are on my account.

My replacements will be here in the fall, and spring...........year-round shipping and bigger plants would be a nice change, but I'm relatively happy.

On May 1st, 2010, veganman changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

After a few orders and deliveries this spring, I can say I am happy with the changes MB has made.

First the Accolades:

By entering the keycode from the catalog they sent on their site, I was able to access a great $2.99 sale not otherwise advertised.

Thanks for that MB!

The potted plants are larger and more robust than ever before. Make no mistake, they ARE small specimens, but none of them arrived limp, leggy, infested, moldy or dead. It's nice to open the box and not have a swarm or stench greet you.

I didn't order any bare root items, so I don't know how those are shipping this year.

The packaging has come a long way. The individual boxing of the plants really helps them hold up to shipping.( Sometimes it takes a week+ to get them)

Now the Criticism:

I would really like the option of a shipping upgrade (Ground, 3 day, 2 day, etc) when ordering, as UPS Basic is at the bottom of the price, speed and service barrel. Ground promises a delivery date, Basic doesn't.
Depending on where you live, Basic can take more than 8 days, and be delivered by your mail carrier, not UPS.
IMO, It's disrespectful to your customers to charge them $8.75 for shipping, then use the cheapest, SLOWEST method offered, instead of the speedy service that $8 can actually get. It should be this way for every customer, every order, every item.

I actually just incurred a surprise $8.75 charge on my visa for the shipping of a replacement item......coming UPS Basic. I know they will fix this for me.

All in all, I'm happy. I got specimens of plants I can't get locally, so I can handle the shipping slight.

On June 10th, 2010, veganman changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following:

I refuse the comment about heat and summer shipping. It's a cop out posted by a nameless, faceless tool.

How does Logee's do it?
Oh wait! They actually ship things quickly, not by the pallet. They also ship more efficiently, ergo buying the speedy delivery the customer paid for, not funneling extra funds into a non existent customer service team or an admins pocket.

Back to "negative" you go, Losers.

I hope you enjoyed my business, you'll never get it again.

P.S. THANK YOU FOR CHARGING ME FOR SHIPPING ON REPLACEMENTS AND CHARGING ME FOR SHIPPING AGAIN ON AN ORDER PLACED (and cleared my bank) MONTHS BEFORE.

I have been dealing with Michigan Bulb for over 8 years and my beautiful landscaping is a credit to their company. If I have a problem with a plant, they always replace it, no questions asked. One year, I did an inventory of my perennials and wrote them to tell them which had died. I received the plants immediately and for the few they no longer carried I received a gift certificate. I am glad they wait to ship them to you when the plants will thrive. I have ordered plants I was unfamiliar with and this policy prevented some mistakes.
You do need to be familiar with how to care for bare root plants. They do not look like much when first planted, but, if properly cared for, they turn out to be better than those I bought from my local nursery. I think this is because they develop better roots early since they start relatively small.
I love their coupons as well. I always try to get $20 of plants for free. Today I was shopping again. Their site is easy to use and helps you select the right plant based on your zone, your shade/sun placement and even what colors you want to look for.

I am a 62 year old gardener with LOTS of experience behind me LOL and I have used Michigan Bulb for over 30 years.

I have placed 3 orders this fall with this company totaling over $275.00 for both live plants and bulbs. I have received everything ordered in what I consider to be a timely manner and in reasonable condition. I complained about one plant that was damaged in shipment and was sent three plants to replace the defective plant and received it within one week from the time I informed the company of my dissatisfaction.

After reading many of the comments regarding this supplier I have come to the conclusion that folks do not understand that they are purchasing young plants that have not matured (the reason why the price of the plants is oftentimes more than reasonable). You should also understand that a supplier of this type may well run out of an advertised product and may have to substitute product (in my case I ordered 5 red tulips and received 25 mixed white and pink tulips which was a very good deal as far as I was concerned) or ask you to wait until the product again becomes available.

When receiving bare root plants you should know that they do not look like much when planted but give them a year, perhaps two and they will look like the plants that the local nursery sells for triple or more than the price you paid for them.

I have found that all plants received from this company have been true to the description and throughout the years I have lost plants due to either my lack of knowledge of their care requirements to or just plain back luck or bad weather. Michigan Bulb has always replaced them without question, without additional charge for the added shipping costs they entailed to replace the plant and that means a lot to me! Their 100% satisfaction lifetime guarantee is stellar and I doubt that you can get such a guarantee from many other suppliers.

The one area I do not like about this company is that they do charge for your complete order as soon as they receive it. I would prefer that they change their policy in this regard and charge for the plants at the time they ship them if you agree to pay for the plants via a credit card. If they would do this I believe they would have happier customers and I doubt that this change would not effect their operation that much and would make people not feel like they were paying for something they have not received.

I commend them for offering a WIDE selection of plants at a price that most gardeners can easily afford. They do not have an 800 number but if you do call they they respond promptly and have a knowledgeable staff on hand to answer you questions.

I highly recommend this company, if you have time to let the plants purchased mature. If you want a more mature plant/shrub, etc. you need to look elsewhere.

I ordered 9 sets of Magic Carpet Thyme from Michigan Bulb on May 12, 2010. My order totaled $60.66, which was immediately charged to my credit card account. The shipping date has changed several times since then, & it is now estimated to be shipped Oct 18-25, 2010. I called during the summer & asked why I was already charged for these plants. Every company I have ever dealt with online has charged my account only when the items are shipped. I was told "That is our policy. Sorry." So they have had my money (earning interest for them) since May & it is now Oct. 11 & still no plants. I called today to cancel my order & explained that we have already had a frost. How can I plant now & expect these immature plants to overwinter? The customer service rep says the plants are shipped dormant & there should not be a problem! Well, I am not willing to take that chance. If I knew that I was to be immediately charged for plants that still aren't here five months later, I of course never would have placed that order. I will never order from Michigan Bulb again, especially because of their policy of charging immediately for the order rather than wating to charge when item is shipped, as is the standard everywhere else.

I've been ordering from Michigan Bulb and Springhill for the past 3 years. First things first, on their website and in their catalogs they specifically state what kind of plant you will receive..a 3" pot, a bare root, a bulb, etc. So there shouldnt be any surprise when you receive a bag of bare roots in the mail.

What I love about these guys is that they will stand behind their product. Other local nurseries will not offer any kind of guarantee. So if you spend $15 bucks on that lovely Mountain Sage and it dies...well, you're SOL. But with Michigan and Spring Hill...you can call and get a replacement. Oh and forget Home Depot -- any gardener knows that you don't buy perennials from them!!

You just need to know your stuff and do a little research on those plants first before you submit your order. If I see something in Michigan Bulb that I like and although it may say zone 5, I will check local growing resources on the web to make sure that they will grow in my semi arid climate. And, not every bulb is going to grow...sometimes they just don't make it. Maybe they get rotted in the ground over the winter, or slugs or snails eat them.

So far I've been quite satisfied!

I figured out why so many people post negative comments about Michigan Bulb Company! First of all with myself being new to them in ordering, I never expected to receive only the root portion of plants when their web site and catalogs show all these lush and beautiful plants! Who would have figured that would be the way? I guess I am so used to purchasing at local stores and not this grow your own (a little more developed than a seed but not much) company catalog.
And second, I had the lovely experience of ordering and then requesting a replacement but guess what? I had to wait for my replacement to arrive in September and this was a June order I had orginally placed. Very frustrating. But then again only part of my order was received and I called early to check on the delivery status in telling them I had not received the entire order and guess what again? Here it is September and now I have to wait until April for half of my unreceived order because they did not have any more. And yes they did charge my credit card way back when even though the order was not shipped yet. I do not think that company's are allowed to do that.
Very disappointed with this company. I think I will go back to Spring Hill Nursery! :-)

I have not even received my order from this company yet and already am having to leave this negative feedback.
I placed my order 4/28/10.
So far every time I check order status shipping date is pushed back another week. From 5/14 -5/21 first and then 05/18/10 - 05/25/10 and now once again to 5/21/--5/28.
After the second change I sent an email to the company which they never responded to.
I wonder if they will send these plants in the heat of the summer or not send them at all. They have charged my credit card as soon as the order was place.
Should I happen to receive an order of healthy plants in the near future I will update this feedback. In the meantime...fore warned is fore armed.

Further on, the refund credit appeared on my charge the following day and I was totally surprised again as I expected it would be lost !

I also placed a large order of plants from this company, before discovering all the reviews posted here. Then I figured, well the prices were so good, I might as well see how it goes with what I've already ordered. Then, as many others reported, the ship date kept getting pushed back and pushed back. Every day, it was pushed back further. Finally it was pushed back so far, that I realized even if they were delivered on the day they are estimating, I can't get them into the ground and established enough before winter! So i got nervous and canceled my order. They were kind, and did so quickly for me. Then I started to hem and haw, and thought, I really, really want that 3-in-1 Rose of Sharon, so I went back and ordered a smaller group of just a few items.
And, lo and behold, they were shipped the following week! Weird.
The package came two days after they shipped, which I thought was great, considering other complaints about shipping. I went outside to retrieve it, and the box was so SMALL! I could hardly believe that 5 potted plants and 6 bareroots could fit in it! I was expecting styrofoam peanuts all over my house! I opened the box, and inside were the 5 potted plants all healthy, green, and beautiful (albeight tiny), packed with cardboard sleeves (from an environmental standpoint - brilliant!), and the bareroot plants in plastic bags. Not bad. I immediately unpacked everything, watered them, and then planted them this afternoon. The healthy potted plants look fantastic, so we'll see what happens this winter. The bareroot Phlox - one package was in great shape, easy to separate, no problem. The other one was a little moldy on the plant side (the roots looked great though), so I planted those right away as well. So far so good - better than I expected.
I've already placed another order for some lily bulbs. With these prices, and their guarantee, I think it's totally worth it.
But again, we'll see this spring how things look!!

On June 24th, 2010, Massgirl changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following:

The moldy phlox never grew, so I e-mailed for a replacement which they sent right away. Those phlox too, bareroot, and moldy when I got them. Again, e-mailed for a replacement, which they sent right away. THIS TIME, they came and were in great shape, large healthy bareroot plants. They are growing well - finally! Also, I bought a package deal of daylilies, 5 different colors/types of daylily plants (Re-blooming Daylily Collection), that came bareroot. Three did not come back, and when I went to e-mail them again for replacements, something was wrong with their website. For a couple weeks I kept trying (I didn't feel like calling). Finally they corrected whatever their issue was online, and I was able to ask for replacements. In the e-mail I stated the kinds of daylily that did not survive the winter, the order number etc. and they sent me replacements - but not the kinds that I had stated in the e-mail! They sent me replacements of a DIFFERENT daylily that I had purchased (that were actually doing well) from the Buy One Get One category. So now I have four daylily of the same kind/color, when I wanted three replaced from a completely different order. I wish the customer service person had actually looked at the order number I provided with the e-mail describing what I had purchased originally, in order to replace the correct plant! Sigh. At least the ones they did send me are doing well.
I had also bought a Mixed Coneflower 12-pack, consisting of 3 Black-eyed Susans, 3-White, 3-DoubleDecker, and 3-Purple Coneflowers, only 6 of these have survived and are doing well, and I have asked for replacements of the rest - which are back-ordered to be shipped in the Fall, and the "Order Status" says 1 of each. I'm hoping by "1" they mean 1 3-pack, but who knows? I'll have to wait and see, because I don't seem to be able to trust their customer service. If I get only 1 of each plant sent, I guess I'll just have to try them again.
Anyway, long story short, I've found them to be hit-or-miss. Some of the plants I've purchased from them have been great deals, and are doing really well, and some plants (like the phlox) just never had a chance!
The only good thing is that they have a Lifetime Guarantee, so provided you are a patient person....

My husband and purchased a new home last spring and we need ended up having to re-landscape. I saw some excellent deals from Michigan Bulb and ordered quite a bit. A bunch of different kinds of trees, bulbs, roses, and many other items. I received a few items at a time for the next four months. Only one item was cancelled, so I could live with that since all the other items arrived although much smaller then I hoped for. Not one of the items grew back this year. No trees lived, no roses, no strawberries, NOTHING!!

I also purchased from various other places and even transplanted plants from my old home...Every single one of those survived and look beautiful. So it isn't because I don't know how to garden.

I wish that I would have known about this site before I spent my money. -

I am thoroughly disgusted at this point in time. I placed an order on April 3, in the amount of $254.00. My wife an I have been preparing planting beds and so forth. Excited about recieving plants that are not available in the area in which we live. The shipping range is Feb 22 through June 12. In the past two weeks I have made 4 phone calls. Each time I got conflicting answers as to the status of my order. It's in packaging, which to the comon person would mean it should ship in a day or so. Next it was UPS is going to pick it up the next day. Then is was that are gathering your order is should ship in a couple of days. With each delay the shipping date of arrival is getting pushed back. Currently I am not expected to recieve my order and this will be a partial order is after 5/11/10.
I orderd from three companies around the same time. Springhill, arrived in less than 2 weeks.
Burgess, still waiting, getting bits and pieces. Thats another story also.
If I get the run around today I am filing a complaint with the BBB. If you can't provide the services listed then you shouldn't be in business.
If you came to my business and needed medical treatment and I told you I couldn't do it today, and you came back the next day, and I delayed again. How would you feel about that.
I am not happy right now. In order for me to do business again the plants must be outstanding.

On June 15th, 2010, kbrightbill added the following:

On June 9 2010 I cancelled the remainder of my order. I recieved approximately half of the order. But felt I had to beg and plead to get it. Communication is horrible with this company. They are happy to take and use your money while you wait for your product. The plants I did recieve were packaged well and in great shape. However, I live on the doomed coast of the Gulf region. And the plants should have been here around april not June.
After doing the research I should have done to begin with. I found two compaines one close to my home. Bluestoneperrinals and Santa Rosa Gardens both in Daves top 30. great web sites, very informative. Even told me that some of the plants I wanted from michigan wouldn't grow in my climate. I placed orders with each company. One order left on June 14, the other will go out today June 15. I placed these orders the week before. I will never do buisiness with Michigan Bulb again. I urge you to do your research before you choose an online nursery.

HI, I placed an order to Michigan Bulb three weeks ago, and also called twice to add to my order. They were very patient with me, and didn't even charge any additional charges to the order. My blue-girl rose shipped out first, and it has been planted for one week now, and is already leafing out. Part of the order arrived last night, which is alive, and doing well with lots of leaves. There is no unpleasant odors to the plants, and no molding. I am quite empressed with the purchases. I received a 3-1 flowering rose of sharon, a royal empress tree, blue scabiossa, pink scabiossa (budding out), and two flowering maples. I plan on planting them this morning, and am very pleased about the condition of the plants, the packaging that they have arrived in, the timely manner they arrived, and the customer relations of the company on the telephone. I am receiving the rest of the shipment next week. I think that this company has been highly under-rated, and I will order there again. I was quite pleased with my purchases last year. I have had a very positive experience, and would recommend them to everyone. I live in Washington State, and am quite satisfied with their nursery. Thank you.

I placed 3 orders this year, and have received two of the orders on time. They send very nice plants in containers, and their bulbs are always very nice as well. I think their prices are good. I would like to find out why everyone seems to dislike them so much? I can only say that they are a quality place to buy plants from. They were delivered in time, also they are kept in quarantine in many states for a period of time. I do not think that mail order nurseries should be held responsible for something that is not their fault.
They give extremally good service.

I placed an order around 3 weeks ago, and received it this week. Most items are bare root, or shipped in small containers. I can say that I really like Michigan Bulb, and everything I order from them. They are starts, not developed plants, and they take time to develop. The plants that I ordered a couple of years ago are now well developed, and thriving. I have ordered japanese iris, and they arrived bare root, and ready to plant. Everything that I ordered this year is in very good condition with good rooting systems. I am very happy with Michigan Bulb.

After reading all the negative press on this company I felt I had to chime in, enough already! I have ordered many times from Michigan Bulb and their sister companies and will continue to do so! My first comment is that my rating would be positive-neutral, leaning toward positive.

That said, here is the skinny on my experience with them. I like that the do not charge my card until the ENTIRE order has shipped. When it does, the time from notification to receipt is only a few days. Their products are definitely 2nd tier. With the plants and bulbs I have ordered they are smaller and there is die off. The packaging is barely adequate and the plants need to be soaked immediately upon arrival. Success rate is 3/4 survival. They start off slow (small size plant/roots) but do take off once established and given the proper conditions and TLC.

My most pleasant experience has been with customer support. I frequently order collections and when I experience a die off with part of it, they ship the whole collection to me. Yes, I have had collections resent multiple times, but never once was I given any hassle and the re-ships were very quick.

The underlying theme here is the cost, you don't pay much for this stock and as such you are receiving a lesser product. Understand full well what you are getting into! You WILL have die off, but they DO replace them and stick to their guarantee.

On May 26th, 2010, MorsisX changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following:

OK, had to drop this rating to Neutral. As Michigan Bulb has informed that due to my returning 80% of the items that I ordered that they will no longer be honoring orders from me. That being said, they did refund all of my currently outstanding returns in cash.

I have ordered from Michigan Bulb several times this year, and i have always recieved my plants in a timely manner, and every one of them is alive today. I ordered a nearly black rose that started growing before i even put it in the ground. I planted it in march and it has already almost doubled in size and the blooms are so fragrant and beautiful. I also ordered a blue girl rose bush, it began to grow immediately but took a while to bloom. Then i realized that i didnt get one of the roots all the way in the ground. Now that the roots are properly buried, the plant has five buds on it. I ordered 11 various daisy's and only one has died which is my fault because i broke the stem trying to get it out of the pot. Five lily of the valley which doubled their size in one week. I find it amaising that plants can even survive a trip through the mail. Much less live and flourish as mine have. However if they dont live, it could be a problem with the soil or weather, and not always the company. I know that their merchandise is always packaged with great care, and comes with instructions. Very helpful. I will continue to order from them.

Although I am familiar with the ads for this company, this is the first time I have ordered from them. My order arrived yesterday, and the plants were in excellent condition (two butterfly bushes and two Candy Stripe roses), beautifully packed--and although I expected very small plants for the price, they were healthy and well-sized specimens. Very happy with this purchase (and surprised, I have to admit!) I have spent much, much, MUCH more on both plants and shipping and not been half as satisfied with with a delivery as this one.

Well, although my previous orders were rated very, very POSITIVE, this last one has been quite NEGATIVE.

Order placed 4/30, delivery date (originally 5/7-5/9) was pushed up daily. I tried to cancel the order on 5/14 (when the estimated delivery date hit 5/30-6/2), but was told the order had already shipped. Very prompt and pleasant CS e-mail response, though!

The verbenas arrived today dried out and yellow. The rest of the order still has not shipped!

Below is the e-mail I just sent to MB CS, will update when further info available:

"Attached are photographs of the dried-out Homestead Purple Verbenas I received today.

Please refer to customer service correspondence dated 5/14/10 regarding Order Number xxxxxxxxxxx, which I tried to cancel due to the lateness (and daily delivery date change) of the order delivery. I was told that the order was already shipped, and it couldn't be canceled (as of 5/14).

The order clearly seems to have been PACKED on the 14th,
but it was not shipped until the 18th, resulting in the terrible
condition of these plants. The potting soil literally poured out of the plastic container like sand. I have watered them, but I cannot believe they have a chance to survive.

I have no idea what kind of shape the ferns will be in, if and when they ever arrive! VERY unhappy with this order!

They promptly responded to my inquiry, informing me I need not return them and they cordially agreed to provide replacements. I love this company. They sent me some of the nicest small plants I have ever recieved from any mail order company. The only possible drawback is that they did change the estimated shipping date once or twice, but thats no big deal since it said estimate in the first place. I dont even consider that a real issue. Best to ship the plants when they are ready.

Now about the plants: I ordered two different varieties of honeyberry, a goji berry, and two persimmon. All are very healthy, free of disease, and the honeyberry's and goji berry are in small pots rather than bare root. Which is a huge plus. The persimmon trees were packed well with some shredded bark bareroot, and are larger than I expected, being a couple of feet tall and thick stemmed too! The shipping box was sturdy as well.

Although this is the first time I've ordered from this company, I will definitely order again. Thank you!

I received my first order from Michigan Bulb yesterday. The order was placed on May 2nd & here on May 11. Not Bad. The prices were pretty fair & their guarantee lured me in. The packaging was impressive! A nice, little booklet was sent with the order that was very informative as to the proper way to plant & care for a lot of what they sell, which was a nice little touch because I got some tips from it for plants I already have. I was Very concerned about the basic shipping via UPS but when the order arrived, the soil was still damp. The plants were a little wilted with some yellowing leaves, but appear to have very healthy root systems. The bareroot Blue Girl rose I ordered was Much larger than I expected, which is Great! I am a little disappointed with the apperance of the Double Tuberose bulbs as they look completely dried out & shriveled up, but we'll see what happens. I was pleased with how easy it was to track my order & customer service was efficient & personable. Overall so far, my experience with MiBulb has been pretty good. The plants are a little smaller (except bareroot rose) than I had hoped, but if they grow into nice specimens, then that's all I can ask for. So, if I get blooms on everything & all the things I ordered survive & become what their descriptions say, then I'll gladly order from Michigan Bulb again.
