I was very skeptical about ordering plants online again since I was burned once before. When I saw the Greenwood Nursery website and researched the site I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered hibiscus and when the order arrived I was absolutely blown away by the size and quality of the plants. They were all healthy and huge. The roots were amazing. They website is full of tips and information on planting for all different types of plants, shrubs, trees, etc. In less than one week my hibiscus started to develop leaves and they are growing like crazy. I have already placed another order to be shipped in October, I can't wait, and thanks to Greenwood I have the best looking garden and lawn in my neighborhood. I highly recommend Greenwood to anyone wanting the highest quality in plants and customer service around. This is one online nursery that you can trust.

The staff at Greenwood Nursery was fantastic and the customer service was outstanding. When other nurseries would not ship to me because it was too late in the season, they did! Their product is phenomenal - in just two weeks they all look fabulous and are thriving, with the exception of 1 coneflower plant that was deliver by UPS in a damaged box which broke the stems (no fault of Greenwood's!). When I let Greenwood know, they offered to replace the plant at no cost, and when they were not happy with the condition of the coneflowers, they asked me to pick a replacement, which they are shipping out immediately. Even their e-mail response is within a day and always helpful. Now THAT is customer service and they have earned a customer for life.

This was my very first order with Greenwood Nursery. I ordered and received 10 hedge roses and 75 bare root English Ivy plants. The plants all came in perfect condition. Since I have the proverbial "black thumb," the plants are still alive and doing well! I had a question about feeding/watering and when I emailed said question, Greenwood responded that very day. I would buy from Greenwood Nursery again.

I am very pleased with my order. The plants came in expert packaging and all but 1 of the 3 butterfly bushes seem to be doing great in the ground. If that one fails, I'll hope to replace it without a problem. I also ordered a hydrangea that's doing well, and a burning bush tree. I was weary about the whole bare-root idea, but the tree is doing great so I think it will be ok. It was packaged really nicely so don't be weary about bare-root shipping! The prices even beat my local nurseries! I placed another order yesterday.

I ordered 1 burning bush tree, 10 burning bushes, and one Japanese Maple. All of them were bare root. I planted them promptly within 2 days of arrival. Unfortunately, none ever showed any signs of life.

I emailed photos of the dead plants to Brenda of Greenwood who agreed to send replacements for the burning bush tree and burning bushes if I would pay for shipping but balked at replacing the Japanese Maple. Apparently her supervisor examined the photo and felt that this plant could not have come from Greenwood as their maples were 1-2 ft tall.

I emailed Brenda another photo of the Japanese Maple next to a measuring tape which shows that it is nearly 1 foot tall. Why would I lie about something like this? I am still waiting for a response from them.

I do not feel that I should have to pay for shipping to get replacement plants when my entire order was defective (the order cost me $58). What if the replacement plants are all dead too?

Stay away from Greenwood Nursery.

As explained to the customer, the trees he received were still dormant. They came from the cooler so that they would bud and leaf out when he received them. They might look like "sticks" but after leafing out, they will look beautiful!

We ship hundreds of Burning Bush out each season. The customer did not want to plant these bushes, since he didn't understand dormancy, and decided to lay them on the deck of his house and let them dry out before planting. In 80+ degree weather no less.

So yes, technically they are dead NOW.

As for the Japanese Maple, he had many Maples planted in his yard (as was noted in the picture) but the ones that are sent out from this nursery are grade A Japanese Maples that are at least 1 foot tall, yet under the 2 foot mark. They are also well branched Jap Maples.

The picture sent in was of a whip, a younger Jap. Maple that had not even started budding. In other words, this tree was a full growing season younger than the ones that we send out.

If this customer had called in when the items were received, he would have received replacements within 10-14 working days at no charge. Not even shipping, as per our stated guarantee in part 1. Since he did not call us until three months later, he falls into section 2. Only shipping rates will apply.

We apologized for any ill will that he feels for us, but this is a policy across the board for all customers."

I placed a small order to try them out. I ordered two Heptacodium miconiodes, a Weigela Ruby Queen and a Pagoda dogwood. The two Heptacodiums were superbly wrapped and arrived in great condition. The bareroot Pagoda dogwood was also well wrapped and arrived in good condition. However, the Weigela was hardly wrapped at all. It seems that the pot was wrapped in shrink wrap and just place in the shipping box. Needless to say, almost all the branches were broken off and the leaves dehydrated. The packaged was shipped on a Thursday from TN to IL. So, it sat somewhere over the weekend. When I called to complain about the condition of the Weigela, the customer rep told me to dig into the soil to check to see if it is green and alive! I pointed out that I just received the plant and there were dried leaves and green broken branches. The stump should be fine but the rest was pretty beaten up. Her reply was that the plant should recover. I'll take her word for it and I'll plant it.

So overall, I'll give Greenwood a neutral rating. No company is perfect. But why do they ship live plants on a Thursday? Most companies ship live plants Mon-Wed so that the plants don't sit in transit over the weekend. Certain plants are tougher than others and can take prolonged shipping periods better than others. In this case, the Heptacodiums have leathery leaves. Others like Weigela have softer and more delicate leaves, so prolonged shipping may not be too good for them.

They must have had heat stress during transit & died. (it had been very hot.) I took a photo & asked for a refund since the weather was not looking like it was going to be any better for a second, later shipment.
The rep said she would pass on the photo & get back to me. After the initial response, they did NOT get back to me. I contacted them again. They insist I must send back the dead plants & soil in order to get a refund. These things happen; good companies do not make their customers jump through hoops when a transaction goes poorly.

I am so disappointed... I bought a new house last October. Over winter I spent hours and hours pouring over websites searching for a nice border plant. Finally, I found the Willow Nashiki at Greenwood. I placed a large order on February 10 and, to take advantage of special shipping rates, bought several other items as well. I dug my holes and eagerly awaited my hedges.

On May 2 I received an email stating that they were out of the Willow Nashiki. There was no apology or explanation. Now, either they were out when I ordered way back in February and waited until May to let me know or they sold the plants to people who ordered after I did. Either way it was not fair. I passed up so many good offers to order from Greenwood. Now everyone is sold out of what I want or no longer has the great offers.

I am not one to give a negative lightly. I really wanted a nice pleasant transaction. I wrote back and canceled my order. I never heard from them again. Still no apology or anything. They have an overwhelming positive rating here, so I expected something better. :-(

Dus to the sudden spring freeze that Tennessee and most of the mid-west to southern states received during the Easter Weekend, all nurseries received tremendous amounts of freeze damage to their stock. We, too, received damage to quite a bit of our inventory. To all of our customers that ordered Nishiki Willow, Dynamite Crape Myrtle, Cosmopolitan Grass and Red Barron Grass, we sent out an email stating that the freeze had damaged most of these plants. They are still alive, but the quality of each plant is less than we wanted to send out to customers.

This was a blanket email.

When I got the package and opened it up, everything was in fine shape. A couple of plants had a few leaves that were starting to wilt, but a bit of water perked them right back up.

I got the (still dormant) trees planted last weekend. When I checked them last night, 2 of them were budding out.

I live in Gulfport, Mississippi and as everyone knows we suffered in many ways after Hurricane Katrina. The storm has changed many lives and has changed the landscape for generations to come. I purchased several trees after the storm from Greenwood Nursery. (3) White Spire Birches, (3) Yoshio Cherries, (4) Japaneese Red Maples, and (2) Weeping Higgins Cherries.

As promised Greenwood shipped them and straight out of the box after carefully planting and using the directions provided, the began to grow imediately. The year following the storm, 2006, we suffered a prolonged drought. I watered everything I owned to fight this and with luck, lost only two trees. I had expected to lose more but their strong root systems and good quality has paid off. Surviving through the winter and now a lovely Spring, the trees are now flourishing. More than twice thier original size now, the are all beautiful.

I had placed another order this Spring for (3) Pink Crabapples, a Pink Dogwood, and just after planting they woke up and they are unbelievable. I can honestly advise anyone that no matter what plant or tree you buy from Greenwood Nursery, you will definitely have spent your money well. Although there are those expected circumstances for novice gardeners such as myself and the envitable loss of one plant or another, but with such good quality stock that they sell, it makes it much easier!

Just this past weekend I placed another order for (6) Aekebono Cherries that I will share with my neighbor as a birthday gift and I know that soon more than ever, my yard will be the envy of the whole neighborhood.

Thanks for a new beginning out of ruin Greenwood! On a scale from 1 to 10, I give you a 20.

all i can say about ordering from this company is you "might" have a "painfree" experience or you just might have an experience from hell like i have just had.

It is not our policy to make sure that the customer entered their email address in correctly. They are an adult and should hold themselves accountable.
Both emails stated that her credit card had a problem, to please call us and we would fix the problem. On April 28th, the customer called in and spoke with Shasta, one of our customer service ladies, about her orders. When she was told of her card problems, she then wanted us to ship them to her anyway and she would "just figure something out" about paying for her orders. When she was told that we didn't operate that way, the customer told Shasta to “keep your %^& *#$ plants then!” plus other things that we don’t believe are worth repeating. All of this is documented.
The customer then emailed the owners telling them what was stated in her negative review. After that, she was told her business was no longer needed here.
We can work out or tolerate most issues that arise, but we will not allow our employees to be treated this way by a customer, no matter how much money they spend.

She ordered me a replacement Tree right away and asked if I could send her a photo of the damage, it would help in perfecting their shipping process. I sent her the photos of the damage right away.

She wrote back and informed me that my new Cherry Tree was on it's way and to keep the damaged tree, go ahead and plant it, that it would grow up just fine. She was right, when Spring arrived it had buds all over it. :-)

This Nursery is so wonderful and very refreshing to do business with. I got an E-mail this Spring to ask how my new Trees were doing...this high quality of customer service is very rare today! Most companies I've dealt with aren't the least concerned about their product after you've made your purchase...and I usually have to fight to get a refund...or any kind of customer service! Received two bare root Cornus florida 'Appalachian Spring' (Dogwood) that were ordered a while ago.

One tree arrived with a bit of damage on one limb, and while I am a little concerned about the possible opening for disease and/or bugs, I'll be leaving in the ground until late Spring to see how it does.

Both trees were truly "husky". It's a good descriptor, especially when they are compared to all other examples of Appalacian Spring I've seen locally which, were terribly scrawny with no roots whatsoever.

The sizes of these two were 4' with a 2 1/2" diameter trunk and 3'8" with a 2 1/4 diameter trunk.

Both trees looked like someone cared very well for them where they were raised.

Very healthy tree with an excellent root system.

Other than the real disappointment due to the damage which was not major to the point of threatening the life of the tree and that which seems to have been an unfortunate accident right at the point of packing or shipping, I'm pleased the true vigor of the trees.

I'd be very surprised if they didn't take off in the Spring.

I will update at that time.

Upon receiving a copy of my post above, John from Greenwood Nursery contacted me to inquire about the minor damage that had happened during shipping. John felt differently about it and truly seemed to want me to have an outstanding experience with Greenwood Nursery.

When he saw the photo I send of the minor damage, John emailed me saying,
"You can leave that one in the ground and it may grow to be a beautiful plant, but I would prefer we send you another in the spring so that you feel good about your purchase with us. I will get that set up and you will get an email before it ships."

There was also an email confirmation that a new tree would be shipped in the Spring and a wish for my having a happy holiday.

I have to say, this was above and beyond what I would have ever expected from an online order to a nursery.

I will, without a doubt, order from Greenwood again and again and again.

Finding Greenwood Nursery after ordering plants through the mail for thirty years with sometimes good/sometimes bad results rates right up there with finding true love. (Well, pretty near.)

Steve and Cheryl and those at Greenwood who package and send plants have to be customer caring as well as plant caring because every order I've received has been packed with care and arrived healthy and ready to start growing.

My latest experience with them was this past spring, when I ordered ten Knock-out roses. All I can tell you is that the roses, after a West Virginia hot/dry summer and little extra care from me, are true knock-outs. They've never ceased blooming and are so beautiful. The quality of the plants was better than many, many I've received from other nurseries and the fact that Greenwood's prices are much more reasonable than the pricier, better known nurseries, doesn't hurt, either.

Yep, I think I've found my mail-order garden home.

I ordered from this company several times this past growing season and haven't been disappointed yet.
One of my largest orders consisted of 30 rosa hansen hedge plants to be used as a hedge along the front of my yard. I planted them shortly after I received them (late May or early June--can't remember exactly) and each and every plant has survived and is flourishing. In fact, they are already spreading out suckers from the parent plants.
In one of my other orders, I recieved 10 plants of the assorted butterfly bushes. It took them a little while to establish themselves and begin to grow, but they are now doing fantastic. Much to my releif, it really was "an assortment" and not all of one color or kind.
I had one plant that failed to make it through shipping the first time--a walker's low nepetia. It just looked shakey from the start and failed to survive. I reported it to customer service and a replacement immediately arrived. Same scenario as the first time. I figured there must have been an issue with this plant becoming stressed during shipping as both arrived looking "shocked". Even after replacing it once, Greenwood still issued me a credit to replace the plant--no hassles, no doubts, no questions asked. Wow! That's customer service at its best.
I will continue to deal with them simply because they are fair and agreeable.

Hello fellow gardeners
I have always had a very positive experience with Greenwood Nurseries. The plants were always packaged extremely well, better than most companies that I have bought from. The selection is the cream of the crop. The plants are mostly bare rooted with lots and lots of roots. People should know that before they order, exactly what bare rooted means. The plants that I planted last fall are blooming nicely, one did not take and will be replaced this fall. Cheryl and Steve operate an exceptional gardening center. If there is a problem or a concern, you can count on speaking to some one on a personal level, not push 1, push 2, or push 3, hold and finally hang up. Actually, the gal that took my last order did research for me to get the info that I needed. I have always had curtious help on the phone. I order from Greenwood Nurseries at least once a year, spring or fall. Best of luck for continued success at Greenwood.

I ordered about 60 plants including wisteria's, Rosa Rugrosa, lilacs, and butterfly bushes. A little disapppointed with the 2 quart pink wisteria's, they haven't shown signs of new growth and are a little straggly, but the bare root westeria's jumped as soon as I put them in the ground. 2 weeks and about 1 foot of growth...awesome! The Rosa's are a little slow coming out of domancy but most seem to be going now, and all the lilacs were sprouting in about 2 days. In all a fairly positive experience, I would definitely buy from this nursery again. This time I would just order a little earlier in the year.

Here is a picture of the David Phlox from Greenwood which arrived May 31, 2006. Leafless, poor condition. The company spokesperson said "it looks great".

Here's the "Greenview Bamboo" I ordered:

Literally, there was not a drop of soil in the container. The dry root ball was the exact same size and shape as the plastic container it arrived in. The pics here make that clear, so it was somewhat amusing for the company to say the soil must have fallen out in the box:

The company representative is right that a refund was eventually offered. The Phlox survived the summer, but the Golden Tiara hosta died. I would like a new Golden Tiara hosta since it died, if that's possible (shipping in Spring is fine). As for the Bamboo, I'm going to wait and see how it does next Spring. Thank you.

Customer was correct that the plants did not meet their expectations nor did they meet Greenwood Nursery standards. Though the plants survived and will prosper we felt obligated to meet the customers expectations. Customer was contacted and offered free replacements or a full refund as well as keeping the original plants. They did not accept this offer."

I ordered 3 Annabelle Hydrangeas and an Oakleaf Hydrangea in February this year. They notified me of the anticipated shipping date a few days later, and the plants arrived right on time.

The packing was competant (bareroot). They seemed a little slow to break dormancy, but all are leafed out and are thriving in their new beds.

I'm pleased with the experience with Greenwood Nursery and the professional way they managed my transaction and will order from them again.

I ordered 25 red dogwoods (they describe as sticks and they are sticks), 3 butterfly bushes, 10 christmas ferns, 10 lady ferns, and 5 "husky" whitespire birch.

The dogwoods have shown no sign of life in 2 weeks, I have done everything I can to get something to happen...alas nothing.

The birch were far from husky, they were dried up and what new growth there was , were browning. Two of them are showing signs of life in the ground. Note: They were very small, twig like.

The ferns were dried up clumps of organic matter, they crumbled to pieces in my hand. So they are worthless.

The butterfly bushes are doing well, they added 10 free ones, 6 of them are leafing.

I have a compliant e-mail into them and got a reply after 3 re-sends telling me they are very busy and I will be tended to when they get the time. So, I will keep sending it every week till I am satisfied.
