I placed an order for $65 worth of seeds at 1 am on the 7th. of February.
by the 13th of February, I had not heard anything from them, so I logged into the web site to check the status of my Order, and it said that the order has been paid for and not shipped (they received the payment on the 7th of February), so I sent an email asking for a Status Update. (I Including all the information from my Paypal Invoice/receipt, to help them find my order).
I received a reply very quickly telling me to Log into my account and to check the status of my order that way.
So I replied that I had checked that, and that it said that they had received my Money, but not yet shipped my order. and that I was wondering when my order might get shipped. I also mentioned that two other seed orders that I had placed with other seed merchants on the same day, had all ready been delivered.
I again received a very prompt response stating this
"Please read the Terms & Conditions of Sale and HELP page!
You did not add Expedited Service to the order.
The answers of your questions can be found in the Terms & Conditions of Sale and HELP page."
This was all they wrote in the email.
So I replied that I was not trying to be Nasty, and I had read the Terms and Conditions of Sale, and was just wondering when my Order was going to ship,
That I understood that according to their web site "It could take 7 to 10 business to receive the order during the busiest time of year.” (and yes the word was missing on their web site) (and Yes I let them know that the word was missing on their web site.
I then went on to say that if they had just told me that my order was still being processed and should be shipped by the end of the week, I would have been perfectly happy.
I have not received a replay to this email, however the entire "Terms & Conditions of Sale" page on their web site has been updated and corrected, but the status of my Order has not changed.
They have time to promptly reply to my emails and fix errors on the web site, but they do not have time to process my Order.
Now their web site says "Non-Expedited Orders take an average of 2-7 business days to leave our warehouse, and 3 to 7 business days for delivery time for First Class Parcel."
SO I will continue to wait untill the 19th of this month before I say anything else because with the worst case scenario of counting business days, the 19th would be the 7th Business day after I placed my order on the 7th of February.
I would actually be less concerned IF I was not treated so impolitely when I corresponded with them.
I am also concerned because recently other people have placed orders with Reimer, and have received their orders in Less than a Week from them. On February 18th, 2008, jimbarnhart changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:
I recieved Notification that my order has been processed and will ship tomorrow (02/19).
With the Notification was an appolgy for the Delay, explaining that they had been hit with this nasty flu that is going around. |

Below is the HELP page concerning ESTIMATED DELIVERY TIME
---------
What is the Estimated Delivery Time and When Can I Expect the Order
to be
Shipped?
The estimated delivery time is:
3 - 7 days USA Orders - First Class Parcels
7 - 21 days International Orders - First Class Parcels
Non-Expedited Orders take an average of 2-7 business days to leave our
warehouse, and 3 to 7 business days for delivery time for First Class
Parcel.
We ship all orders via the United States Postal Service.
Add Expedited Service to future orders if you need the order filled
quickly.
Expedited Orders are filled before non-Expedited Orders and select
Priority
Mail or Express Mail for quicker delivery.
Expedited Orders take at average of 1-2 business days to leave our
warehouse, and 1 to 7 business days for delivery depending on the
shipping
method you selected during checkout. Expedited Orders placed on a
Friday
will be processed the following Monday.
The busiest time of the year is between December and June, so consider
selecting Priority Mail or Express Mail during checkout if you want
your
order to arrive more quickly. Add Expedited Service to your order if
you
want your order filled immediately. Remember, orders are filled in
the order
they are received, except for Expedited Orders which are filled
first. The
delivery time is based on when the order is shipped and what method of
shipment you selected during checkout. International Orders can take
longer
than 21 days, if the Customs Office in that country decides to
inspect the
package.
To check the status of your order, Login into your account and click
Order
History to check on when your order was shipped. In the upper left
hand
corner, the date the order was shipped is found after the words
COMPLETED.
The time of delivery starts from the time the order was COMPLETED.
---------.
And, you did not add Expedited Service to your order, so the order
is filled
in the order they are received. If you did add Expedited Service,
your order
would have been filled the following work day.
Please read the HELP page concerning EXPEDITED SERVICE
----------.
What is Expedited Service and Should I Add it to My Order?
Add Expedited Service to your order if you want your order filled
immediately. Orders are filled in the order they are received,
except for
Expedited Orders which are filled first. The delivery time is based
on when
the order is shipped and what method of shipment you selected during
checkout.
----------.
If you want us to cancel the order and refund the money, we would
gladly do
so.
Your order is scheduled to be shipped early next week.
And for the BBB complaints, people who report complaints are usually
those
who don't read the Terms & Conditions of Sale before completing the
order.
If you read the Terms & Conditions of Sale, which you were required
to read
before completing the order, you would have found all the questions
you had
about estimated shipping time and Expedited Service. We haven't had a
customer send so many emails about estimated delivery time as you
have.
We hope we answered all your questions and your order is on hold now
until
we hear back from you to see if you want us to cancel or ship the
order.

I was told that they do not substitute under any circumstances even if it is their fault and that I could only be issued a credit. I was very rudely referred to their "terms and conditions" page on their site.
I would like to suggest that their website ordering system be made more customer friendly. It seems that their ordering system does not reflect good customer service i. e. the fact that an out of stock item cannot be substituted for another item of equal dollar value.
It is not the customers' fault that they do not have an item in stock when they have all control of their inventory and of updating their website to reflect current inventory status.
It seems odd on many levels that they would rather issue a credit or make the customer wait until they replenish stock than to substitute for another in stock product at the customer's request.
As a first time customer I would especially expect them to be more accommodating in effort to earn future business and I will definitely take this into consideration before doing business with their company again. |

I responded to their e-mail assuring them my address was correct despite what their computer said. I have lived here for years and should know my address. Also, I deal with well over fifty companies from around the world every year and have NEVER had a delivery problem. Reimers and I went back and forth a couple of times until they agreed to mail my order if I would accept responsibility should there be delivery problems. I said "ok". Two days later I received an e-mail stating that since I had failed to fix my address problem my order was cancelled. A query to their company indicated that it was their way or no way. To this I pointed out that they had lost my business and that I, as a garden column writer, was going to share with my readers the dissatisfaction that I felt with their company. I then received a littany of nasty responses incuding calling me "too lazy" to fix the problem as well as calling me an "obnoxious Canadian". They even went so far as to point out that I was obviously not a good Christian (paraphrased) since I was "harrassing" them at Christmas. This is without doubt the most offensive "service" that I have ever received from a seed/plant company. Generally people in this line of work are fairly similar and willing to go that extra mile to help out another gardener. Not Reimers. It is conceivable that I just got someone on a bad day, but even so, such responses are unproffessional and inexcusable. Also, I have saved the entire chain of e-mails as proof should there ever be any dispute from Reimers as to the veracity of my statements.
There is obviously a reason that I had never (in forty years of gardening) heard of these people before. |

In March 2006 I ordered seeds from Reimer’s: Gypsy Peppers and Dona Tomatoes. I planted the pepper seeds and not a single one germinated. At this point I discovered Dave's website of complaints against Reimer’s.
In March 2007, as an experiment, I planted two Dona Tomato seeds from my remaining supply from the Totally Tomatoes catalog, and two Donas from Reimer’s. To my surprise, all four seeds sprouted. But it soon became obvious that one of the Reimer’s seedlings was NOT a Dona Tomato. The leaves were bigger and rounder, darker green, with heavy crinkling. I called it the Reimer’s Mutant.
In due time, I transplanted the seedlings outdoors. I put the Reimer’s plants in a separate part of the garden so I could keep an eye on them. In early July some kind of wilt attacked all my non-Reimer’s tomatoes (the two Donas from Totally Tomatoes, and two Early Girls from a local nursery). They sickened and shriveled. The Reimer’s Dona (in a different patch of earth) wilted a bit, but kept plugging along.
The Reimer’s Mutant, however, is SPECTACULAR. It resisted the wilt. It is seven feet tall and still growing (now in August 2007). Dark green and healthy even through this summer’s heat and drought. Its tomatoes are delicious.
I don’t know what it is, but I’m saving the seeds.

First, I thought their turn around for getting my order out was really good.
This was my first time ordering any kind of seed from anyone. My wife and I went to Peru where we had some of their Aji Amarillo peppers (long and bright orange when ripe). Reimer was the only place I could find that sold the seeds here in the US. Being my first seed order ever I ordered small. I ordered two packs of Aji seeds and as a bonus got one pack of Thai Dragon seeds for free. Of the Aji seeds, I followed the instructions and went to Home Depot and bought the the potting soil they recommended and used the seed started things. (Little round disks you add water to). It appeared that from all the plants that came up every seed but maybe one or two germinated, which I eventaully transplanted outside. We got a lot of peppers before they succumbed to Hurricane Katrina. (Beleive it or not all of the pepper plants in the yard came back but 1 this spring !!) OK, now I planted the Thai seeds doing it the same way. Its been over three weeks and not a single seed has sprouted. I never examined the seeds for spots or holes etc as other users described here since I am totally new to this and didnt know to look for that. So I dont know. One good experience and one bad so far.
As far as shipping rates. Yeah mine was the same. The USPS package listed the price as one thing and I paid more for "shipping". Then there was also the handling fee.
Here are my questions. I want to keep growing peppers etc. Wanted to grow the Thai's in pots. Do any of you have another company that you "recommend" that I can order more seeds from???? One that all of you have had good luck with. Also I will explore this site more, but like a good forum that I can post questions to regarding growing, tending to, etc etc pepper plants once they start. Any recommendations on that??
Thanks a lot.

So far...so good. On July 6th, 2006, sacajawea changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following:
As mentioned, I had a good success rate with the germination of the "Big Zac" tomato seeds. I gave some of the seeds and packets to others.
It seems that many of the plants have "turned into a pear-shaped" tomato. Certainly not Big Zac. I do grow quite a few plants and assumed I hadn't labelled some properly. However, the feedback has even been from people who received an entire, un-opened packet.
At this writing, I haven't heard any response to my e-mail to the company. I couldn't find a telephone number listed on the web site.
I do know that there are a whole bunch of very, very disappointed people. On July 12th, 2006, sacajawea added the following:
Reimer contacted me by e-mail and offered me a refund on the seeds. This is positive! They also "reminded" me that they sent a packet of "red pear tomatoes" as a freebie and perhaps I confused them with the Big Zac.?
When the seeds arrived, I immediately started the Big Zac's and had over 54 plants going. The one packet of seeds I had left over from 2005 (from another source) are all Big Zac's - 15 plants. So far...all the others are a red pear.
I am certainly capable of making mistakes; however, in this case, I believe I am innocent! |

Of the cultivars I ordered from Reimers, I had a 100% germination rate. In no way, shape or form did I follow ANY of the instructions from Reimers on how to properly germ seeds. My family have been farmers for seven consecutive generations...how long has Reimer been in business?
Seeds were placed in moist (not soaking wet) paper towels. Placed in darkness (@70 deg. F) for 1 week. Seeds were removed from paper towels and placed into pre-soaked rockwool cubes. Cubes were placed in the bottom of a 5 gal bucket (from hardware store), covered with plastic wrap (my attempt to keep moisture in) and covered with thick bath towel, and placed in my closet. The bucked was heated with a heat lamp, for 12-15 hours a day (light was turned off while I was @ work). During "daytime" temp was @ 80 deg. F. During "nightime" temp was @ 65 deg. F.
I grew jalapenos (germed in 7-12 days)
habanero (germed in 11-14 days!)
*my first attempt at growing C.chinense and from what I understand, seeds popping in 2 weeks is quite good.*
cherry toms (germed in 13-20 days)
brandywine toms (germed in 8-19 days)
I grew several cultivars of each above mentioned species. The times listed are for all seeds to germinate...some cultivars took way long than others. some were quite speedy.
Anyway, I got my seeds quickly. I never had to talk to their customer service dept. I don't remember what I paid for S&H....but Im sure it was cheaper than buying a seasons worth of peppers and toms at the farmers market.
I had a good experience with Reimers. I was shocked (eariler today) to learn of others experiences with them. I guess I got lucky. To anyone considering using Reimer as a vendor, I wish you the very best of luck.

These were Aji Brown, Atarodo, Peter Pepper and White Bullett Habanero. Online purchase was easy and the seeds arrived quickly for the distance. Reimer included a packet of Numex Mirasol as a free sample.
I planted the seeds the same way I have always planted my seeds (I grow 40 varieties of chilli pepper). One seed only from each of 4 varieties germinated.
I queried this with Reimer. Their customer service responded quickly requesting detailed information which I supplied. They replied that is was my fault because I did not use their recommended brand of potting mix (hello, I live on the other side of the world), I over watered and the temperature was not high enough. The other 15 varieties from other sources planted at the same time and using the same technique had 90+% germination. They did however refund the money for 2 varieties.
Their seeds that germinated are struggling to survive. It's very disappointing that they blame me and not their seeds. |

This time I controlled the conditions closely, monitored germiation rates visually and daily across hundreds of seeds; and yes, my experience was nearly the same as others here. Germination was predominantly "variety specific", except for the packages of 'rats turd", "goat weed" and "white bullet" seeds, which produced between them, 3 plants. One of which I am looking at now, and it aint no hot pepper. In fact I was trying to figure out what I grew when I stumbled into this melee!. Gosh I hope Riemer seeds doesnt get mad at me, but I aint skeered,. P.S. wife (ex-farmer) says I told you so. |

Chinese Multicolor - totally different pepper - long skinny, and not multicolor. Purple leaves only similarity.
Thai Dragon-Thai bird peppers instead - 1/2-3/4" long.
Firenza jalapeno-different jalapenos included with it 50/50
Ata Ijosi - totally different from last year - only 3/4" long, not 2-2 1/2"
White Bullet - very low germination rate
Hanoi Market - no gemination
Goat weed - no germination
My cousin had an even worse experience with her order.
Looks like I will be looking for another seed supplier as well.

I have only started one variety as I bought them for next spring primarily. Of the one I started (Tiny Tim Tomato) I have 100% germination. Each and every last one of those seeds are popping up green parts. One must remember that temp or moisture variations in shipping can damage a seed. In fact I am thinking of not buying any more seed for a couple months because the temps here are really high and that could damage a seed sitting in a metal mail truck.
If I have germination problems with the other varieties I'll be sure to come back here and let everyone know. |

The varieties I wanted, no one else offered, we got the standard 2% germination. (Their Standard!)
They were on my favorites list, no longer. Will never order from them again.
This was a very small order, so didn't waste my valuable time contacting them. (Sure didn't want more of their seeds.)
Lesson #1, should have looked here before ordering!

I always had great germination rates and would highly recommend purchasing from them.
They are always adding new and exciting varieties.

What are your seed storage conditions?
What is your source for pepper seed?
What kind of guarantee does your source place on the seed?
How old is the seed?
Is the genetic purity of this seed guaranteed?

If so, how are you isolating the plants, sexually?
And if you aren’t growing these peppers yourself, how can you be assured of the viability?
What are your seed testing conditions?
Stats?
Did you use a control group?
What precautions do you take to ensure that no seed born pathogens make it to the end user?
What kind of quality control do you use to ensure that the seed you offer, for 1265 hot peppers alone, is viable?

As I remember, of the 10-12 seeds he sent in bubblewrap, only 2 were whole & neither germinated. While chasing down this thread, I found another, then another, here's the three threads:

I hope Reimer's responds to this post that I never bought seeds from them, therefore this post should not have been allowed on Dave's Forum. Then I hope they track down all those on the Garden Web were groundless & complain to Spike Hernendez that those posts should not have been allowed. Then maybe they'll find another forum with complaints & complain to the webmaster that those were due to buyers that don't know how to start seeds.

I was going to add a comment like, "Reimer's, your reputation is already tarnished, stop damage control & fix it!", but I figured that was addressed in the responce about exorberent charges for shipping & handling, and more charges for handling...... If you want to pay $2.50 more you can download the free online catalog to your computer so you look at all those seeds that won't germinate.....(//www.reimerseeds.com/category.aspx?categoryID=445)
Course they'll give you your 2 fifty back after you pay for seeds that won't germinate, S&H, handling fees, state taxes, smoke & mirror expenses............
Forgot.... One last thing..... Reimer's..... You can add me to your list of barred people from ordering from you. If you ever get an order with an 01844-5135 ZIP Code, PLEASE refuse it!!!!!!! |

I called reimers and they tried to blame the failure on me. I have been germinating seeds for a very long time and am quite successful. Other seeds from other suppliers germinated just fine.
Bad seed, bad public relations, high prices from Reimers. |

We are commercial producers of exotic seeds and grow a large number of peppers and other plants every year.
Bought seeds in 2003 and had no or very poor germination with all of the pepper seeds ordered. Control our own seeds 1-2 years old
Most of the seeds had red stains and were brown resulting from processing from dried pods or overripe pods
After my complaint they answered with the well known prewritten
a) Did you follow our instructions ?
b) We are not responsible for international shipments, as the seeds may be radiated !
We are growing peppers for more then 30 years and may have more experience then any of the Reimers gardeners (if they have one ?).
Then they sent me a gift certificate of the value of the pepper varieties not exhibiting any germination.
I then ordered from this certificate 10 other (easy) varieties in 2004 of which 4 didn´t exhibited any germination (tried twice). One poor germination and five ok. Control seeds from tomatogrowers which had all perfect germination.
This is all in all twice and more the price to get a variety - I payed at least 4 to 6 Dollars for one viable variety - the exceptional shipment costs of the less then 1 Oz. shipment not included.
Reimer claims in there respond to jasonnickels voting there good standing of the eBay account.
We are eBay sellers as well with 99.9 % standing and more then 30.000 sold items.
If you have a look at the votes of eBay clients of Reimer, they are voting all for speedy shipment on receipt of the seeds and not for speedy germination.
If Reimer wants I can ask the eBay customers about their germination rates.
Last but not least - Today before this posting here - I placed an order at the Reimers site to give them a third chance.
Everything went right - 7 packages of hot pepper seeds 20 Dollars --- shipment costs !! 7.50 Dollars --- handling costs 2.50 Dollars -- ok Dollar is low against Euro at the moment and my bussiness is running perfect - I payed via Paypal.
But what a surprice -- within a few minutes I had a cancellation of my order and full refund of the payment.
I couldn´t beleave it and asked the Reimer customer service to explain this.
Short and very precise answer : You have been banned from ordering from our website.
I still don´t know what I´ve done wrong and expect an explanation of the Reimer customer service.
As they read all these posts here, they can do it right here.
Happy gardening

We have learned to buy from different sources to guarantee results. The Reimer website, ordering & delivery process worked fine. But most of their seed was completely sterile. All the seed we bought was not only grown in perfect conditions, but also alongside seed of the same varieties from other sources. Most of the Reimer seed did not germinate at all. & that which did was at a very low percentage. We will never buy seed from them again & suggest others go somewhere else too. It looks from these comments that they use the "you didnt follow our instructions" excuse on everybody, but we have done controlled testing on what they sell & it proves they are ripping people off. Go to tomatogrowers.com instead! On January 24th, 2005, jasonnickels added the following:
Actually our order was placed on 12/28/03, not 1/28/03. I have the invoice here. Those seeds were germinated (or not!) end of Feb / Early March 04. So a couple of months after purchase. I did not complain to Reimer, I just wrote it all off as a bad experience. As any grower will tell you, a refund of the few dollars you pay for the seed is no compensation for a failed crop, that is why we buy from different sources.
Re the "Follow instructions on the website" excuse, I say again, these seeds were grown alongside identical varieties from other sources, e.g. Rocoto v Rocoto. And seeds from other companies germinated well but not Reimers. My comment was only posted in November 04 as I wasn't aware of this forum before, I noticed it during another internet search and felt my comments would support those who had obviuosly shared the same experience as me. I do not make a habit of posting negative comments on the internet, but on this occasion I felt it was right to do so.
I should add that their Epazote seed germinated perfectly, and I planted the leftover seed the other day. All is not lost. |

I cannot complain about the time of delivery, it was good. The prices for the seed were fair, even though there is a smaller amount of seed in the packs than I expected it is fair. The problem I had was with their "Shipping" and "Handling Fee". These are two seperate entries on the Sales Receipt. The "Shipping" is further defined under "Description" as "USPS First Class". I did receive the package in First Class mail. The postage that Reimer's actually paid was $.60 and yet they charged me $3.50. They also added "Handling Charges" under "Handling Fee" of $2.50. I contacted them complaining. They emailed back that the "Shipping", "USPS First Class" included packaging and selection of the items. I disagreed with them and explained that their listing of "Shipping", "USPS First Class" clearly defined the postage cost and nothing else.
They emailed me back with the following:
We are not overcharging. We explained the shipping charge.
Please order from another company in the future.
Customer Service
Reimer Seeds

This indicates to me that they are not interested in serving their customers or responding with a solution to complaints.
I feel that this company is using the double charges "Shipping" and "Handling Fee" for extra profit which should really be derived directly from the price of the seeds themselves, not these underhanded charges.
