I love this company! These are friendly, generous people who are really on top of their business. The germination rate on the seeds I've received from them over the last year has been excellent and all of the seeds were the right varieties. Recently I ordered several types of pepper, lettuce and tomato seeds, but they were out of one of them. The check they sent me as reimbursement was too high so I suggested they just send along a packet of a lettuce I'd forgotten to order and I'd send back the check. They told me to tear up the check and then not only did they rush the new lettuce seeds out to me but they also threw in two additional packets of other peppers (this is along with the free packet they seem to include with every order anyway). They will continue to be my first choice for seeds for a long time to come.

I ordered in Jan. got a partial order in March. They were in a thin manilla envelope, no padding, several of the bean and squash seeds were broken. I waited for the rest of my order, finally in May I emailed and they said they didn't know what was wrong with the post office but I should get my seeds soon. I got them two days later. What was wrong with the post office is you cannot send a manilla envelope with several packs of seeds in it for $ .36! The post office sent it back to them. What kind of company doesn't even bother to weigh for postage? Also the free seeds did not germinate.

They emailed me and I told them I would order from them again this year and see how it goes. My order came in today and I think they are doing much better. It came in a bubblemailer with the seed packages well sealed. The seeds were all there and they sent the free seeds and a gardening guide. They took about a week longer than Seeds of Change and Bountiful Gardens but it was still quick. I think they are doing much better and would feel good about ordering from them again now. Thanks Baker Creek!

I have dealt with Baker creek for 3-4 years now. I can tell you they will continue to get my business and I will only buy from another company what I can't get from Baker creek. They have bent over backwards for me, always gotten my orders out to me incredibly fast, and even got me started in market gardening. I would also like to recomend there magazine for anyone who likes heirlooms and for those who don't, well all I can say is order a packet of Baker creek brandywine tomato seeds and you will be hooked. Thank you very much for all you have done for my garden Jere Gettle, you have my business.

We have used baker creek for 2 years now. we have made several orders. we mostly are very very estatic about all the varieties they carry. i absolutely love their romenesco costata squash! love all their squash and pepper varieties. we did have one incident where the seed didn't grow out to true description. so i wrote them and they sent me another packet in a regular envelope. all but 2 seeds were crushed. i wrote them again requesting a padded envelope. i received the seeds in a bigger envelope this time with a catalog enclosed. still some seeds were crushed. they also at that time enclosed a free packet of seeds i had not requested. i thought that was definitely a nice gesture. but still i would think that they would send their seeds out in a padded envelope. besides this one incident we are very very happy with them!

I was please with the prompt and personal service they gave. When I ordered online by card and they were out of stock on an item, they returned the money to me by check. I kept in touch by email and the informed me that they would be able to get more in from their grower later if I was interested. I was, and had seed in time to plant in the spring.

GREAT company! I'll order from them FIRST next season. Customer service was excellent...prices are very affordable and I LOVE the selection of rare seeds!!
And what a beautiful full color catalog with a TON of growing information!

Seeds arrived quickly! I certainly wasn't expecting that with a late March order!! Tomatoes have 100% germination, and huckleberries are just starting to show, so can't give report on them, but I'm sure they are going to do just as good. I will definately be ordering again next year. One more comment - the Heirloom magazine is fantastic!!

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is very fast at replying to e-mailed questions. At one of the busiest times of the year for the seed companies (the month of April), my very large seed order was promptly and efficiently filled (4 days after I mailed it!), with ONLY ONE item unavailable and 4 items back-ordered! In all, it only took about 8 business days for my well-packed order to arrive (regular parcel post), and I should be receiving the remainder of my order very soon. I couldn't wait to leave a comment on how satisfied I am; at this time of year, I wasn't expecting to have all of the items available (with the exception of one which was limited quantity)! I can't wait to plant them!!!!!

[This comment is concerning my order experience, not my planting/growing experience as I haven't planted the seeds yet. But, according to their reputation, they have some of the best seeds around!] Highly recommended, they ONLY carry seeds that are non-hybrid & non-GMO, with many rare varieties available nowhere else!

This is my FAVORITE Seed Catalogue of all!! I have purchased wonderful, really rare seeds from them for several years. Very good quality seeds, and good service. Fast shipping. Fabulous catalogue that has evolved over the years to get better and better. You won't find a better selection of open pollinated and untreated seeds anywhere.Tomato and eggplant selection is one of the best for fine heirlooms and rare foreign seeds. All my plants grew very well from their seed. Book prices were the best I found on those I purchased. My only complaint was that they were shipped in a plain manila envelope that came torn with slight damage to the books. Also seeds would be better if shipped in padded envelopes. This is the friendliest company , with the highest quality seeds, I have ever dealt with and I have purchased alot of seeds from many other companies over the years. I only wish I lived nearer to them so I could attend their great sounding Planting festival and Heirloom Garden shows.

I ordered a variety of seeds from Baker Creek a few weeks ago, and mailed my order with a check. It seemed like I received my order the next day- it was incredibly fast. I love their catalog, my only complaint is that there are too many interesting varieties for me to plant them all! I really like that they give interesting and informative descriptions. I have spoken to them on the telephone, and they were quite courteous, and answered many questions I had about various cultivars. I couldn't be more pleased with them. If the seeds perform as well as the people do, then I have found a new favorite mail order company!

Baker Creek was wonderful to deal with. Yes, they were out of some of the seeds I wanted, but there are so many choices it wasn't hard to choose something else. And I too was impressed with the amount of seed in each package. Many companies give such small amounts that I've ended up with almost no plants after poor germination. Baker Creek's germination rates are great too. This is my second year ordering, and I expect I'll be impressed again.

I ordered from Baker last year for the first time — heirloom tomato and squash seeds — and I was pleased with both the promptness with which I received my order and the substitutions Baker sent for the cultivars they had sold out of by the time they received my order. I did have trouble germinating a few of their tomatoes, and others came up chlorotic initially, but I don't know if this was owing to a snafu with Baker's seed prepping or a snafu on my end. Definitely a company I will try again.

Although their catalog online is very attractive and well written, they are sold out of many varieties they list, and CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!
They will not answer e-mails, they will not say when or if they ever expect to get seed in for many of the varieties.

If they have the seed in stock, they are probably okay to do business with, but they appear to be more flash than substance, and their exceedingly poor customer service is a warning...

On October 21st, 2002, madster changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Although it took a couple of weeks for a reply, I must commend Jere and BAKER CREEK SEED for taking the time and effort to give me a response regarding a seed ordering problem that prompted my previous Negative rating.

Jere most graciously e-mailed me, and explained that part of the reason for the delay was that they were closed in September, because they were harvesting seeds. This is information that should be posted on their website to minimize confusion and dissatisfaction, but regardless, it was information that I was most appreciative to recieve, and also explained the large amount of "SOLD OUT" listings on their site.

Because of the explanation given to me, and the professional and friendly manner in which it was done, I would like to add this message to my previous one, and change my rating to NEUTRAL, as I will reserve judgement at this time until I can complete an order with Baker Creek Seed in early 2003.

Respectfully,
Madster.

Recently we had the pleasure of visiting the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Store and farm in rural southwestern Missouri. First off, you should know this is a "mom and pop" family operation without the vast resources of a Park Seed Company! What an experience to browse the store and its seed bins of delight and suprise! We could tell Jere and his family put a tremendous amount of effort into the store. But what I really would like to do is thank everyone associated with Heirloom Seed's sponsorship of their recent Heirloom Garden Show. Imagine two days of presentations/lectures by nationally-known gardners and resource people, no entry fee, ample parking, great highway signage to the site, display booths, musicians, sales area and snack bar!!! Check with Heirloom Seeds to obtain details of next year's show - I think they all survived...but what an effort! Our drive from east-central Illinois was well worth it. Thanks for everything and best wishes!

I also received a credit slip for a few items that were out of stock. For the size of the order I placed, two or three items being out of stock, seemed like nothing! I was impressed. I e-mailed Jere to let him know that I would like my credit amount placed back on my credit card. The very next day I recieved 2 emails telling me that my credit amount, plus a little extra (maybe for the open packs of seeds???) was credited to my card. I haven't had the chance to start germinating yet, maybe this weekend. It gets chilly up by the Canadian border so I don't want to push it! I received a credit slip for a couple of packets that were sold out. A simple e-mail requesting a different packet was promptly replied to by Jere, stating that the packet would be sent to me ASAP with no additional shipping charge.

Please know that I would not have taken the time to write this negitive comment had I not already tried to work out my complaint with baker rare seed company. A lenghthy e-mail was sent explaining the proplems we exsperenced apon recieving our order as well as some positive points . But their response was curt and only addressed one of our concerns bacause they new they were looking at heavy fines concerns First may I say they Have a lot of desireable seeds in their catalog both hard copy and on the web . unfortunately the ones that draw you to their sight are sold out eight of the sixteen seeds I logged on to purchase were sold out on the web site. one of the ones I ordered that was not sold out turned out to be sold out when I recieved my order . In its place I recieved a credit slip which is Illegle and subject to heavy fines from the credit card company used. They are required to refund back to the card this shows a certain underhanded way of doing bissiness requiring me to requist that it be applied back to my credit card. secoundly the seeds arrived in a ' thin ' manilla envelope with a fragile sticker that was stronger then the envelope it was of course riped halfway open and crumpled by the post office I nicely suggested they change to reinforced envelope and up the shipping cost five cents to this they made no reply. the seed packets themselves were sealed with a small strip of tape some "two" of them had come open and I dont how much seed I lost but some were floating around loose in manilla envelope which as I said was torn nearly in half. when I recieved my confirmation order e-mail It didnt show my order inventory I recieved seeds I didn't order in place of seeds that I had ordered. they then produced for me a "copy" of my odor. which did not match my handwritten one that I had made from their hard catalog Their may be some confusion here on my part because I continualy had to make alternate selection as they were seemingly always sold out. The old crocery store trick " big sign in window steak 50 cents apound then when you pull in their lot and find a parking place and walk through the rain to get some of this cheap steak they are always sold out even though the sign went up as you were driving by" also the seed catalog nomenclature doesnt correspond between catalogs or even the seed packets themselves some seed packets had machine printed sticky labels and were legible others were wriitten in scrathy pen and nearly illegible all in all Ive spent about nighty dollars on seed this season and of that I was only screwed out of Fourteen of them all by BAKER RARE SEED I hope they read this and realize that their are people that will take the time to warn their fellow gardeners of companies that are shoddely ran. thankyou for your time!
