Comments regarding Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.

I enjoy looking at all of the asian heirloom varieties in this catalog. I do however feel that there is too much preaching about gmo's. For his age, Gere acts like some sort of hippy freak. Some of the ideas espoused by this company are blatent exagerations in regard to GMO's.
Good selection, and decent but certainly not great germination rates.

(Corporate farms are a minority!)

Our germination rates all have to pass state and federal rates, which are 75% or above on most seeds.

Just amazing.

For some reason, my order didn't arrive when they thought it would. So they immediately apologized and sent out a package **Fedex**.

Here's the real kicker: they were out of stock with what I ordered, so they included a full refund, 3 substitute (very similar) seed packets **and** a free gift of green zebra tomato seeds.

I oredered these seeds late in the season, so I was in a hurry to receive them and hoped that they would germainate quickly. My order arrived quickly and the germination rates are good (actually, considering how recently I planted them, I'd say the rates are great. Very few small seeds, and quite a few extras in each package.

This is one of the best companies I have ever dealt with. The germination rate for all the seeds that I ordered was extremely high. This company will be one of just two or three that I order from every year.

What a Great Company! I ordered a dozen Tomatoes,and 8 other varieties.Only one was out-They sent refund in cash,I don't know why.I checked the box on the order to leave on account as I will be putting in a much larger order next week.Delivery was promt,Seeds were in perfect condition and seed count was 4-5 times greater than Min.amount stated on packet.Great Company,Great Selection,Great Prices,Great Service.These Qualities are Rare here in Sunny California.

I ordered seeds from them a few months ago and they arrived quickly. The seeds have all pretty much started growing and I can't wait to see the mature plants! I think my trouble with germination with some of the seeds is due to my newbie status as a gardener! I'd definately do business with them again and recommend them to anyone.

My shipment came with a free packet of bonus seeds, too!

The seeds I ordered arrived in good time and the germination rate was outstanding. The variety of seeds offered is amazing, I would order again.

I ordered several packets of annual flower seed from Baker including some bulk flower seed in the 1/4 pound size. Typically, with bulk seed, one expects some chafe (stems, leaves, etc.) in with the seed. But to my surprise, the bulk seed from Baker was a majority seed. I also found the prices very reasonable when compared with other sources.

I will update this entry later in the season after planting.

Ordered 10 differant types of tomato seeds. All have germinated.

Baker Creek is a fabulous enterprise offering a wide variety of heirlooms. Their selection of European melons will make your eyes water.

I've ordered from Baker several times in as many years and always receive prompt attention and well-packaged merchandise. The site is easily navigated and offers interesting tidbits about the origin of varieties.

Second year I have ordered from Baker Creek, and my experience was great. I ordered over $50 worth of seeds all together this year. I always get my orders promptly, and there are always more seeds in the packets than they say, sometimes twice as much. I usually get excellent germination. Nice people, answer questions promptly. They have some varieties you cannot find anywhere else. I love to browse through their catalog. :D

Only problem I had was that, this year, the huckleberry seeds and african bird pepper seeds did not germinate, which was quite odd, perhaps I did not have them warm enough.

Baker creek offers a nice selection of seeds - primarily vegetable / fruit at "average" prices (not cheap but not more expensive than many online companies.....) ......Their seeds arrived in good condition I got a generous quantity of tomato seed and a good quantity of melon seed..... However the seeds took a little while longer than some companies to arrive and when I emailed asking if they had been shipped I received no response.... My biggest problem was my petunias though..... which were 2.00 a pack and I received a very small amount of tiny seeds.... I will have to sow VERY carefully so I don't waste any.... therefore I am giving this company a neutral.... Not the best, had a few complaints but it is generally safe to order from them... and i..e. not the worst.....

Yes, petunia seeds are tiny, the small amount you receive is what we offer in the catalog. some flower seeds look like dust, we would love to make them grow larger, but that is just not possible.

This is my third season of ordering seeds from baker creek. My orders arrived fast and one item was out of stock and had a refund check with the order. I ordered a lot of tomato seeds and squash seed this season. The seed has done very well, I have had some problems with my squash getting good size the past couple years but it's not the seed, I needed to do some crop rotation and add some compost and manure which should help in that area.
I also subscribe to their magazine the heirloom gardener, it is a superb publication packed with a lot of great information. This year I placed two orders both arrived fast within a week and were in great shape. I am anxious to see how they grow this season. last season in wyoming was usually cool and wet at times so it was hard to blame the seed regardless of where they came from. I will be doing business with baker creek for a long time. I also hope to make it to their spring planting festival this year.

Very fast service !!! I was having trouble finding blackeye pea seeds locally this year and hadn't ordered them with my larger order from another company. The California blackeye seeds were pretty expensive from Baker but I guess I made up the cost with the much lower shipping cost as compared to my usual company. I also ordered an interesting sounding mesclun mix and an heirloom melon.. It would have been helpful if I had known there were only 30 seeds in the pea packets but I probably still would have ordered them.

I have ordered from this company several times, and the seeds are always fresh and germination is great! They are also very generous with the amount of seeds they send.

Got my order of seeds FAST! No problems with order and the site is very easy to order from. I would love to see more photos of the items! This is actually my second order with them, the first was an order for my father last Spring. I had it shipped to him and he got them quickly.

I placed an order through their website on March 6 and received it on March 12. This is my first foray into growing so many of the heirloom tomatoes and melons so I am really looking forward to sowing and growing these.
Fantastic catalog and website. Easy navigation on the website. I wish there were more flowers.

Baker Creek has always been a joy to work with. E-mails have been answered within 1-8 hours. Seed always fresh and clean, high germination. Excellent selection of varieties, with good histories in the catalog and website. Sent in a large order ($135 - about 70 different varieties, 10 species) and received all back in less than two weeks - one variety was out of stock, and there was a note and a refund check in the package with the seed. Excellent packaging in padded mailer.

I ordered seeds from Baker Creek for the very first time this year. My order arrived within a few days of placing it.

What impressed me the most was the way they handled a couple of minor problems. I think a company's reputation should also be based on how they handle problems. I had one out-of-stock and have already received my refund! VISA can't even refund that quick. :-) The other problem encountered was receiving the wrong size seed packet(My wife said she wouldn't mulch if I didn't grow the white watermelons). I sent one brief e-mail which was responded to within a day and had the correct size packet being shipped out.

This company was easier to deal with than most and very professional. We are still trying to find the right plants that 'want' to grow in our yard, and with this kind of service and selection, we'll continue to deal with them.


My only criticism was with their catalog. Don't get me wrong... It is awesome, but being kind of new to gardening it would've helped to have known germination and maturity dates for all varities without having to look elsewhere.

Unbelievably speedy turnaround time considering this is the "busy season" for seed ordering. Placed an order for 39 items (including a T-shirt & a subscription to their magazine) on Jan. 12th; received order in the mail yesterday (Jan. 18th).

Five items were out of stock, for which they enclosed a refund check. E-mail questions were answered promptly & cheerfully. They also very thoughtfully included not only a sample copy of their Heirloom Gardening magazine, but also 2 packets of free/gift seed - one of "Green Zebra" tomato & one of an heirloom melon variety I'd never tried before. The gift selections were particularly nice, as I've found that "gift seeds" from other companies frequently tend to be of the more common stuff. These will actually be fun to try.

The only problem/error with the order was that I had ordered a pack of purple kohlrabi & they sent me white Vienna kohlrabi instead - but I quite frankly like both varieties, so no big deal.

I will add to/update this post re: germination, etc., as I start the seeds, but unless something goes horribly awry, will DEFINITELY order from these folks again.

They were out of a few things, which seemed strange considering how early I ordered. Overall I am happy with my purchace.

Well regading are seed order to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. we are very very un-happy in Dec 2003 we did place are first order with Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. and then in the spring of 2004 we did place three more seed orders and it did go from bad to very bad.

We are a small commerical growers of Heirloom vegies and have been doing it for years!
Well in the seeds that was shipped to us in Dec 2003 they where old seeds and did not sprout.

The three shippments in the spring of 2004 where not packed right for shippment in the US mail and the seeds where crushed. When we did contact Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. we where told at that time the seeds that we had ordered and where interested in planting as are cash crop 2004 where all sold out!

Of the un crushed seeds that we planted none of them did sprout!

There was one rare mellon that we where the mosted interested and did spend lots of time and money and they did not sprout at all.

It does look to us that Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. spends more time and effort in Publishing than they do in the seed production and seed handling!

All four seed orders where not packed right for shippment!
We will never order seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. again!

Why would you keep getting "ripped off" four (4!) times, I would not repeat order 4 times if I kept getting crushed seeds?

I searched the internet for fordhook acorn squash as my father-in-law remembers it so fondly. Baker Creek was the only place I could find it. I ordered the fordhook as well as some other interesting things I found on their site. Of course, as it sometimes seems to work out, I got everything else I'd ordered within a few days, (as well as some free seed), but the fordhook acorn was out of stock...not backordered, but a credit slip that left it up to me to reorder. (Suggestion to Baker Creek: why not just make it a backorder?) After a couple of e mails I sent that were not answered, I finally sent the credit slip by US mail requesting two varieties of tomatoes if the fordhook was not available. Within days I got not only the fordhook acorn that I had ordered, but also the alternate suggestions I had requested if the acorn were not available--all as gifts--no charge to me--plus a very nice handwitten note apologizing for any inconvenience...and explaining that the acorn had just arrived. Also their catalog came within a few days...anyone who has not seen the catalog needs to order one just to have as a coffee table book--Beautiful! I love just looking through it and seeing the photographs of the different plants and vegetables. I've given mine away and wish I had another to replace it. I will definitely order from this company again. The seeds have all had 100% germination as far as I can tell. I'm expecting a really good crop this year.

I have been ordering from this company for about 2 years now, and I live in The Netherlands.

I have never seen seed germinate so quickly or completely.

All of my orders have come with amazing speed. I have never received a damaged order.

A few times I have been disappointed with a sold out variety or two, but the incredibly interesting free packets of seeds they give away have more than made up for the disappointment.

The little bit of email I have exchanged with them has been prompt and courteous.

Their prices are extremely reasonable, as is their shipping and handling costs for overseas orders.

Amazing selection -- I suspect pure heaven for melon growers -- in particular for those of us who love heirlooms and unusuals, a strong dedication to non-GMO products, reasonable to below average prices, fast shipping, fantastic germination rates so far, and a free packet thrown in that's something I'll actually use ... I recently got very interested in heirloom seeds, so naturally, I ended up with the Baker Creek catalog. I was slightly hesitant because of the reports here that they didn't ship with bubble mailers, and seeds got crushed. But there were so many varieties they carried that I couldn't find anywhere, so I went ahead. I am pleased to say my order arrived safe and sound in a bubble mailer, completely intact with an extra pack of seeds thrown in. So far, I have had very good germination results. I will definitely be back next season, their selection is fascinating.

This is the first American company that I have ordered from and I found the service very quick and efficient, the seed packets arrived here in Ireland much faster than from a few companies I use in the UK. The quantity of seed provided was also quite generous. Will definitely be using them again.

Very happy with my order. They did send one wrong packet but I emailed; they were very helpful and proactive in getting me the right one, and sent extra packets both with my order and as an apology.

I recently placed an order for about 35 packs of seeds with Baker Creek. I received my order about 5 days after I placed it. Everything was packed well in bubble wrap, and arrived in very good shape. Two days ago, I received my first order ($193.80) from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed company. I mailed the check and order form on Jan 18, 2004 and received my shipment just 20 days later on Feb 7, 2004. Actually, it might have come in several days before, but I only go to town about once a week to pick up my mail.

The box was bubble packed. Of the 96 items ordered, all seed packets that arrived were still sealed and in excellent shape with no lost seeds, two items were backordered, one item had an extra packet of seeds, and one item is missing. The book "Seed to Seed" arrived in perfect condition as did the magazine. The promised gift packet of seed was there. Not a perfect shipment, but not bad either considering the large number of items ordered. I'm sure I'll order from this company again next year.

I emailed them today to correct the missing and extra items and to inquire on the backordered items. Actually, I'm glad something was missing as now we'll see how their customer service works.

I'm looking forward to getting their seed into the ground and seeing what comes up.

After reading some negative reviews regarding the packaging method used by this company, I contacted them and received a prompt response, indicating that they now use bubble wrap, and would glady replace any damaged seed. I will report back once I receive my order, but, based on the promptness of their reply, suspect this neutral rating will be quickly changed to a glowing positive.
