Plant NameCultivarTypeThumbnail
Abelmoschus Species
Abelmoschus manihot

A newcomer here in the Israeli community garden, and we're not quite sure about what to do with it. In any case, it's beautiful!
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Vachellia Species
Acacia minuta

This small tree was once used as a windbreaker in Mediterranean Citrus orchards. Few trees remain and it is a slow grower, but the fragrance is worth the wait.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Agastache Species
Agastache aurantiaca

A charming small perennial from Mexico. It is pleasantly minty, and its taste is very similar to that of the much larger A. rugosa. Limited supply.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Agastache austromontana
A small perennial plant from Mexico. It is delicately Lavender-scented.
I'm not really sure whether the correct species name is "austromontana", meaning "Southern mountain" or "astromontana", meaning "star mountain". In any case I have it listed under the latter, more poetic name.
This species is really poorly documented!

Agastache Species
Agastache foeniculum

This North American tall herb is absolutely identical to the Korean Mint, Agastache rugosa, and the only difference is that it has a strong Anise flavor, whereas the Korean Mint is, well, usably minty!
Since I have grown these two in widely separate locations, I am reasonably confident that no hybridization between them occurred.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Agastache pallida
An interesting plant, about which I know nothing except that it is a perennial that flowers in both Spring and Autumn, and that it is beautiful.

Agastache Species
Agastache rugosa

I collected the original seeds in Paris' Jardin des Plantes, so I can assume this is the real deal, the original wild type as would fit this respectable botanical garden. We grow it as a short-lived annual as it does not survive our Summer's heat. It is nevertheless a quite large herb, and it is used as an excellent culinary Mint.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Agrostemma githago
A rare wild annual that likes to grow in the garden.
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Albizia Species
Albizia lebbeck

This is a fast-growing blooming tree Legume from Asia. If you need shade in a hurry, this one is for you.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Alcea setosa
This is our local Hollyhock, it is just as tall as the garden cultivars, and it is seeing increased use in roadside landscaping in Israel. It is a non-hardy perennial.
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Anagyris foetida
Stinking Bean Trefoil is a local shrub which flowers during the Mediterranean Winter but sheds its leaves in Summer. Since it is a Nitrogen-fixer, this feature is interesting to whomever grows Summer vegetables, and could use a Nitrogen-rich mulch after enjoying this plant's Winter bloom.
Its very hard, purple beans, are real jewels and the alleged stench is only perceived when the leaves or the pods are bruised.
'Wild - Sharon Plain' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Anethum Species
Anethum graveolens

Just plain Dill, garden-grown.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Anthemis tinctoria
This species is now called Cota tinctoria. My seeds were collected on a tephra mound of the Northern Golan Heights. This strain has no ligular florets, and it grows as a perennial shrub. Since its location is at an altitude of 1000 meters, it should be somewhat frost-hardy.
'Wild Type, Northern Golan' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Aristolochia Species
Aristolochia elegans

Yes, it is a weed! I collected a good quantity of seed pods while reclaiming a large area of our community garden that had been "vined out".
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Bituminaria bituminosa
The Hula Valley strain of the Pitch Trefoil is a large herbaceous perennial that blooms for most of the Summer. It is very easy to grow, and there's no reason why this very attractive species should not be adopted for gardening.
'hulensis' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Clinopodium Species
Calamintha nepeta

Western European accessions. Calamintha incana is also available and even more weedy!
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Carthamus Species
Carthamus tinctorius

This annual is a very welcome addition to a Mediterranean Winter vegetable bed. The rosette leaves are delicious in salads, and the abundant flowers that appear in late Spring add a welcome touch of color to the garden.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Centaurea crocodylium
A very special late-Spring wildflower of Israel, with huge flower heads and an expansive, quite messy habit. It attracts bees, butterflies, and maidens.
'Wild Type, Northern' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Centaurea cyanoides
Centaurea cyanoides is the local version of the Cornflower. It flowers until late Spring, and it can be grown as a ground cover. Although it is an annual, it can be displayed to advantage, in a rock garden.
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Centaurea eryngioides
This is a very special Knapweed, which is found sparingly among the rocks and the sheer cliffs of the Judean Desert and the High Negev. In cultivation, it will bloom from the end of the Winter until early Summer. It could grace any warm-country rock garden!
'Wild - High Negev' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Sesamum Species
Ceratotheca triloba

Collected 08/28/2013
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Cistus creticus
This Rock Rose is one of Israel's two species. It is fairly abundant in the Mediterranean woodland and shrubland (Batha) of the country..
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Cistus salviifolius
This Rock Rose is getting rare in the few urban nature spots of the Tel Aviv area. I collected the seeds to do some local-patriotic remediation, and I'm glad to see that this works!
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Clitoria Species
Clitoria ternatea

This is new for me. This climber is very fast-growing in our subtropical Summer conditions, and quite sturdy too. It has succeeded where other plants have failed.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Coix Species
Coix lacryma-jobi

A very nice perennial grass that we grow in the community gardens as a "handiwork crop". The bead-like seeds come off the plant pre-perforated!
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Consolida ajacis
A beautiful, showy, self-seeding Larkspur-thing.
'Not known' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Corchorus olitorius
Melukhia, a.k.a. Tossa Jute, is a Summer leaf vegetable which is widely used from Israel to Tunisia. It is a fast-growing, multi-harvest annual belonging to the Mallow family, although it was previously included in the Linden family. It is somewhat drought tolerant, and heat does not faze it the least bit!
'Generic' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Cynara syriaca
A very large and very spiny species of Wild Artichoke. I don't know anything about its culinary properties, but it sure looks cool!
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Dianthus libanotis
Seeds from the first garden generation of this very rare and beautiful high mountain Carnation are now available! The flowers are large, up to 5cm across, and each individual plant exhibits its own unique floral pattern!
'Wild Type - Hermon' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Dracocephalum Species
Dracocephalum moldavica

I grow this plant throughout the Winter, and it sows itself profusely. It has a delicate lemony flavor, and it is known to have an anxiolytic effect due to the presence of Citral in its essential oil. Most people have Pelargonium hanging pinkly from their window sills, I have this, in blue.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Erodium telavivense
The Tel Aviv Storksbill is a Winter annual endemic to the Sharon Plain of Israel. It is quite large, but very sticky, and it's bright azure blooms can only be seen in the morning, since it sheds its petals at 10:45 AM sharp!
If you do not mind somewhat misbehaving wildflowers in your garden, this one is for you!
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Eruca Species
Eruca sativa

Rocket a.k.a. Arugula is not one of my favorites. It does grow wild, in very large stands, on the slopes surrounding the Jordan Valley, where it tastes just as foul as the garden variety which seeds I have collected. It is, nevertheless, a rather pretty Spring flower.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Fritillaria persica
A special geophyte of our Mediterranean woodlands. There is a maroon-purple flowering population at the desert's edge in the South, but what I have is from the Upper Galilee population, which blooms in greenish-yellow.
'Wild Type' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Glaucium leiocarpum
This exquisite perennial Mountain Horned Poppy is reputedly challenging to grow, but would be eminently suitable for an Alpine rock garden.
'Wild Type - Hermon' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
A'Kub
Gundelia tournefortii

A very special culinary Western-Asian Tumbleweed that is also accused to have provided the raw material for the Crown of Thorns. My seeds were collected at a 2,000m altitude, thus ensuring that what you may grow from them is hardy to at least 9b.
'Wild Type - Hermon' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Helianthus Species
Helianthus argophyllus

A different kind of Sunflower...
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Hibiscus Species
Hibiscus sabdariffa

An annual giant, which blooms profusely by Summer's end. The calyces are boiled to make chemicals-free grenadine, and the kids love it.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Hyptis suaveolens
Chan, Pignut or Velaiti Tulsi is a large tropical, annual forb with a peculiar fragrance. It is a member of the honorable Mint family, but it flowers like a Verbenaceae, and propagates itself like a Boraginaceae: you gotta catch these seeds on their way down!
'Wild/ ruderal' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Hyssop
Hyssopus officinalis

Hyssop is quite flashy, easy to grow and the best expectorant bar none.
Seeds Image
(Shirrush)

Ipomoea quamoclit
This annual is an instant Summer climber! Germination, emergence and initial growth are lightning-fast, and the effect of its bloom and foliage are quite pleasing!
'Red' Seeds Image
(Shirrush)
Lablab Species
Lablab purpureus

This climber flowers in late Summer, and yields very nice and tasty green pods throughout the Winter.
