Lomelosia argentea Lomelosia argentea is an endemic perennial herb with a lacy silvery foliage that flowers throughout the hot and dry Summer of Israel. It is a very sturdy and somewhat aggressive plant with a deep taproot. It can be planted for xeriscaping, with the added advantage of sustained flowering. The seeds germinate readily with the first rains of Fall, and the seedlings develop rapidly as a silvery rosette from which thin flower-bearing branches develop in the summer. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Lomelosia palaestina Another, less common pretty Scabious from Israel. | 'Wild Type, Mount Hermon' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |

Lupinus angustifolius A charming early Spring wildflower. This Lupine is infrequently encountered in Israel, and it appears to prefer somewhat heavy soils. I never had any success growing it in our red-sandy gardens. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Lupinus palaestinus This annual Lupine is endemic to the coastal area of central Israel. It may be partial to sandy soils. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |

|
| Medicago Species Medicago arborea This is an amazing fast-growing, heat-loving shrub. It is deciduous in Summer, but will flower until late June in our latitudes. I collected the few original seeds in the dismal harbour of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea, in Aug. 2013, from dead-looking plants. In the first year, only one in four shrubs deigned to bloom, and there were no pods. I harvested a lot of seeds in the second year, however. It is thus likely that this species is not self-compatible. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
| Melissa Species Melissa officinalis Lemon Balm is rather common in riparian habitats in Northern Israel, but has no fragrance whatsoever. What I have is a lemony cultivar. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
Micromeria fruticosa A native Israeli rock-piercing sub-shrub. Probably the best and the most potent teapot herb for Mint Tea. Only the Winter growth is kosher, since the blooming branches which appear in summer contain the hepatotoxic substance Menthofuran. It is therefore harvested in April, before the small-leaved flowering branches appear, and the dried material is used throughout the year. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Monarda Species Monarda citriodora A very pretty annual that blooms in late Spring. It is not lemony at all, but rather disturbingly phenol-y instead! | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
| Moringa Species Moringa oleifera A very fast-growing tree in subtropical climates. Most of its parts are edible, tasty and nutritious. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
Mucuna pruriens This enormous annual vine is a real Magic Bean! The seeds are medicinal, but caution is advised. This variety has almost glabrous pods, and no more than a slight tingling of the fingertips is felt while handling them. | 'non-irritant' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Nepeta Species Nepeta cataria Very tasty, somewhat perennial, a great teapot herb with proven anxiolytic properties. | 'citriodora' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Nepeta Species Nepeta trachonitica An unusual, very rare Lamiaceae from the mountains of the Levant. Seed availability is LIMITED! | 'Wild type, Hermon' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Nicandra Species Nicandra physalodes A large herbaceous annual with sky blue flowers that blooms in early Spring. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
Nigella arvensis A very special wildflower of our area. It blooms when the Summer heat has turned all the other annuals to straw. The flowers are very small, but they're nevertheless unique with these gray stripes on their petals. So primitive yet so sophisticated! | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Ocimum Ocimum gratissimum The Clove (or Tree) Basil, a.k.a. Vana Tulsi, is a true life-saver! It has proven anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, and analgesic properties. Its chopped leaves are great for a marinade. It is the hardiest Ocimum I know, and the largest I have too. | 'Clove' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Ocimum minimum Greek Basil is a compact perennial with dense foliage that tastes just like Sweet Basil, and it is the Basil of choice for the kitchen's balcony or window sill, where a pot of it takes its place between the Common Thyme and the Chives. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
Ocimum sp. This Ethiopian Basil (Amharic: ዝቃቅቤ zik'ek'ibē) was found in a community garden operated by Ethiopian Jewish immigrants. It is still unidentified as to its taxonomical status, but a chemical analysis at the MoAg lab yielded surprising results: 1-8 Cineole, 15.7%, Methyl Chavicol, 18.84%, Beta-Bisabolene, 19.15%,and Eugenol, 9.87%. At least 21 additional volatile compounds were found in more minor concentrations. This plant smells weird, but it is quite a sight, and it has survived our Winter, which does not really matter since it seeds itself profusely. | 'Zik'ek'ibē' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Ocimum Ocimum tenuiflorum This is the well-known purple-leaved, pink flowered strain of Holy Basil. It has a strong fragrance, and releases enough pigment into your teacup to turn Green Tea, Black! It is a non-hardy annual of the sub-tropical persuasion, and it will not germinate below 25 Centigrades. | 'Krishna Tulsi' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Ocimum tenuiflorum Ram Tulsi is the white-flowering strain of Holy Basil. Its taste is more subtle than its more popular conspecific, Krishna Tulsi. This non-hardy annual has many culinary and medicinal uses, and it is one of the best teapot herbs I know. | 'Ram Tulsi' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Ocimum X citriodorum Lemony Basil is a community garden Summer mainstay. It has a strong lemony fragrance, and can be used in place of Lippia triphylla or Lemon Grass. Dried material does not keep well, so this is a Summer treat. It is a stable, fertile hybrid between Hoary Basil a.k.a. Ocimum americanum, an African species in spite of its name, and Pesto, O. basilicum. | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
|
Ononis alopecuroides A large species of Restharrow, with showy flower spikes. I think it should be investigated as a possible fodder crop as well as a green manure. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Onopordum carduiforme This large, arenophilic Cottonthistle has become scarce in the heavily urbanized coastal plain of Israel due to habitat loss, so I grew a few plants, and they yielded a lot of seeds! For the discerning thorns amateurs only! | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Origanum syriacum The one and only Biblical Ezov and true Za'athar. It is still called Majorana syriaca as per the Flora of Israel, but it is know included in the Origanum genus. It is used as a flavoring, and it also has non-negligible anti-oxidant and antiseptic properties. Initial growth from seed may be slow, but established clumps are reasonably sturdy. Avoid waterlogging or excessive mulching. | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
Pancratium sickenbergeri Desert Pancratium is reputedly easy to grow from seed. I haven't tried and I do not intend to try and sow them anytime soon, and these seeds I collected because "they were there", are not getting any younger! | 'Wild Type' | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
| Noon Flower Pentapetes phoenicea A pretty unique exotic of the Cocoa sub-family. A red bloom in our steamy subtropical Summer is something to behold! | Seeds | ![]() (Shirrush) |
