Giant Pumpkins Atlantic Giant

Haskell, OK

To get it to lay down you may have to train it a bit. Try using hoops on it to teach it which way to go. I hope you have it pointed the right way, if you do it should lay down soon.

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

Since the pumpkins aren't for consumption, that would ally much of the concern about the manure.

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

ah

There are very few 275 VanHooks available out there now. The only ones you can get have a price.
I won't be getting another one unless i pay for it and i dont know how much that is yet.
Paul Fiedler is holding my padded envelope until the end of season so he can send me other seeds too. Paul has some of VanHook seeds and Paul is from Texas. VanHook is from Kentucky.

A sad story in the VanHook patch. He lost some plants during a very bad windy hail storm. The whole plants. I think he still has a few that survive but beaten up.
I feel his heart ache.
I wish i could start this year over again. ( 9 months to go )

Very impressive, amigatec. Sounds like you have done this stuff several times before. Both you and CricketsGarden seem to know an awful lot about this sort of thing.

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Amigatec, they sure are growing fast. You may beat OkieGal for sure.

the 898 is 29 inches long now and half way down to the ground. It's getting top heavy and I have to support it differently now. It is a very Macho plant.

I really need to pollinate a pumpkin. grow grow grow.
It has to grow at least 8 more feet before i can start to pollinate. Should be there in about 12 days ( around July 8th). After it lays down and the secondaries start to run and root, it will grow even faster.

There was a lot of fire ants in the pumpkin patch. I put some Over-and Out ant poison on the patch and I had to water it down. I was playing around with the misting watering system.
This is not how I left the watering system----but it was pretty while it was misting.

I think its pretty. I like the plants just as much as the giant pumpkins.

beautiful!

This is only my second year doing this, but I have studied a lot on this. These plants are my babies and take a lot of my time. I decided last year if I was going to run with the big dogs I better get off the porch.

I am surprised at my success this year as well. Last year I grew a 460 and didn't really do a lot to it. So I figured if I take some time and do it right I should be able to grow a monster this year. In this 100+ heat I am shocked they are growing like this.

This is a fun thread to watch.

How about you guys listing with your specs the day number so we can monitor your progress against the benchmarks.

Picky aren't we?!?! LOL

This was yesterday at 159.1 lbs.

These fruit are very soft, if you look just to the left of my hat, there is a scratch mark left by the leaf. It will be removing it.

ha! what's the average male weigh? around 180? almost there!

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Great looking pumpkin. How will you remove the scratch? Great job, amigatec and Cricketsgarden. I admire your dedication to the goal -- both of you.

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

im soooo far behind!!

"Pat", with those measurements, I just know you are goin to beat the state record. That is so pretty.
I feel your joy.

slap me silly. I did not take any pics today.

I been working on a new planting area for next year. (space for 1 plant)
Spreaded out 2 truck load of leaves next to a new planting area and mowed them into the area. It was quick and easy with the riding mower. I have to do it some more tomorrow. Have plans to do it this fall too.
Found a local horse ranch that will tractor load your truck or trailer full of horse manure for $35 a load. I have to check into that. If I get the manure now, it will seed now and I can keep it tilled down and it will naturally compost it self for next spring.
I ordered two mill fabrics from http://www.extremepumpkinstore.com
Two 5ftx5ft sheets for $35 plus shipping. Just incase I actually get to grow a pumpkin this year.
Note to self: dont kill the plant! ( i am still mad at myself! )

I guess I should start a Part 2 thread. This one getting long.
Tomorrow maybe
Happy Gardening

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

You both are doing great. Don't get down on yourself CricketsGarden, it isn't easy to grow a state champion or everyone would be doing. I recommend that you learn for your mistakes -- if you made any and if you didn't, I recommend that you talk to people and find out what you can do better.
I think you are both doing great! Can't wait to see how this all turns out. I have fingers crossed for both of you.,

Haskell, OK

I guess i should have said I will be removing the leaf that is doing the scratching. Scratches can lead to fungus and other problems. Don't feel bad about your plants this year, I know of one grower that had 6 plants last year and lost all 6. I have 3 plants and really only 1 pumpkin that is doing any good.

I disappeared yesterday. I went to Six Flags over Georgia. (again)
when I got home last night at midnight, all i could think about was how the pumpkin plants were doing cause I knew we were getting a cool spell yesterday (89 to 90 degrees)-----tis why we went to six flags yesterday------ and knew there would be some wind.
I did not check on them, I just went straight to bed. My first dream----i dreamed the plant was fine. The second dream , I dreamed my grandfather decided to reroute my vine and i was upset and during that dream I dreamed the vine broke off 5 inches from the ground because he moved it.
What was the first thing i went out to do this morning?= check the 898 .
All was good. The wind must of blown some cause I had one broken leaf.
The vine measures 53 inches long and has a few secondaries that are now starting to run, though some want to go straight up.

And We have "Touch Down" Alabama

The 898 main vine has started putting out some roots at the leaf nodes. I will have to cover those up with leafy soil this evening.
Looking from the tip end of vine down towards the trunk.

Thumbnail by CricketsGarden
Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

I have positioned the 898 main vine exactly where I want it to be.
You do this during the heat of the day. Heat makes the vines more flexible. Cooler morning temps makes the vines Crispy.
No females in sight yet. It normally takes about 2 weeks from the time they are the size of a pea til its time to pollinate. So , I already know that I will not have a female when I wanted one to be ready. In two weeks this plant will be 8 feet wide and 11 feet long with no females ready. Sigh.

820* Lovelace (giant green squash)
Sure is growing slowly. hmmmm
It is a week older than the 898, but it also got broken by dog.
Its leaves are no where near as big as the 898.

And the 275 VanHook, 14 days since sow date. This plant is also growing somewhat rapidly.

It appears my June 28th measurements were off I read my tape wrong so the weight of the 1081 was 195.7 and not 206.4. 206.4 was for the 29th.

The CORRECT measurements today are:
