I like that second link Allison. I don't think I'm going to grow something that's so difficult to eradicate and is on an invasive list for so many states, even if it does have some good things about it.
Time for the pests to show up
Here's the list of all the plants that attract ladybugs to your garden.....The most popular ones have umbrella shaped flowers such as fennel, dill, cilantro, caraway, angelica, tansy, wild carrot & yarrow. Other plants that also attract ladybugs include cosmos (especially the white ones), coreopsis, and scented geraniums, dandelions.
Great info!! Thanks Jen! I think fennel or dill is a favorite of monarch butterfly larvae too.
I can tell you from personal one on one experience what will drive hundreds of ladybugs into your garden....aphids, millions of aphids!!
He hee. Well, yeah. Aphids. Maybe I could get decoy aphids? I don't want more than what I've already got!
^_^
We used to use it in our bridles when trailriding(tansy). It helped keep the deer flies from bugging the horses so much. We also kept it well away from their mouths!

they are on mine too
There are sluggs making lace out of my hostas and Ligularias.
Aaack! Are those lily beetles?
Those are lily beetles above.
Awful I use Bayer Rose and insect spray and Sevin Liquid
It makes a difference
ge sometimes chemical warfare is required!!
I hate slugs, man. Grrrrrr. Those pill bugs are starting to irk me too. Don't have hornworms, but that must be because I don't have tomatoes. They're going in next year. Maybe then the hornworms will show up.
How do Pillbugs damage?
KRAPPPPS I used to think they were cute
cute???
I used Sevin on the hostas to controle sluggs, used it last night as a matter of fact and I was Liquid Fencing everything just naw after discoverint 3 lilies topped off by deer.
There were more sluggs on Gold Tiara than I had ever seen.
So no more Sevin for sluggs.
I spread Sluggo and it does no good at all.
Bonide is next,or I'll just salt them.
Red the whole package of Sevin DUST yesterday. It did not say it would kill slugs. I never used the liquid.

So I had to get something or get totally demolished. Went to WW and got Orthro Bug-Geta. When I sprinkled it on all I could think of was hampster pellets.

Its raining now so there goes all the Liquid Fence.
PLUS My 13 year old cat is MIA.
It's not going to be a good day.
I hope he's upstairs sleeping,he is always in my bed by 3AM to be fed, not today.
I've got viburnum leaf beetles for the first time! My hedge of Viburnum opulus var. sargentii for the first time. This variety is listed as one of the ones that are more attractive to the VLB, and the hedge is too tall for me to pick them off. Arghh!
Here's a link to the little buggers: http://www.hort.cornell.edu/vlb/
Anyone have any good suggestions for control?
Julie
We have that disease.
A vibernum virus is attacking ours. I dont really care as they were left to go wild at the corner of the house.
I have my eye on a whole new landscape plan for that area.
It includes JM's Victor.he he he
I didn't realize those pill bugs do that much damage.
JoAnn, hope you find your cat.
Sherrie, did you put any beer out?
Beer and Sluggo works for us.
Jo Anne, I sure hope you find your cat.
That's funny, Sherrie!
Didn't know pillbugs did damage! Now I know.
I did find him.
He just strolled out on the deck where I am painting Pirls Japanese Iris garden.
Sorry I didnt report sooner. But I get wrapped up in what I'm doing and couldnt stop.
He is 13 years old and 18 pounds.
We had deer at the windows(eating lily buds) He must have been scared of them or the thunder storm.
I am relieved to say the least.
Me, too!!
Glad your cat came home Jo Ann!
With all this rain, I won't put beer traps out for the slugs. I might go out an lay cabbage leaves and harvest the slugs under them in the morning. I heard a mix of ammonia with water works to kill them on the spot. Usually I hand pluck them with a bucket of soapy water, just haven't gone out cause of the rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...
Ugh! Hand-plucking! I leave that to Anna, who doesn't seem to mind. Using beer is a close second to yuck as well. Maybe I'll opt for a tasar!
I was hand plucking the slugs all day (with gloves on).... and yelling eeeewww the whole way to the cup of beer
I saw a slug yesterday. He saw me. I told him not to eat too much. He agreed.
If only!!
my hardy hibiscus has little black with red heads flying beetles that i was killing with fingers yesterday.
