Daily pics vol. 219

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

And so on to #219 . . . following on from #218 here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/994640/

Here's a specially designed island built for Common Terns to nest on at a local reserve, with all sorts of defences to keep predators off. Probably 11 pairs of terns nesting this year.

Mute Swans at the same reserve; this year they have 10 cygnets

Resin, the Tern island such a good thing to see happening. Is it something you're directly involved in? The second shot of the Swans is beautiful.

Wow 10 cygnets, how wonderful!

Can anyone ID this sapsucker for me? It looks like a Red-naped Sapsucker but that would be odd in this part of the country.

One more ID please.

Isn't that last one a Great Crested Flycatcher?

gardenpom - I think you are correct. I am familiar with Phoebes and this seemed larger - plus the yellow on it's chest didn't fit for me as a Phoebe. I have never seen a Great Crested Flycatcher before. I have been asking myself, "Who's singing?" Maybe now, I know! Thanks.

Thank you Pelletory. :)

Here's a very young black-necked stilt trying to muster up the strength to get up onto its feet. I never realized how big their wings are in proportion to their small bodies. It reminded me of a clumsy little puppy with huge paws that just takes time to grow into.

Here's another young black-necked stilt. This one had no problem getting onto its feet. It was doing all sorts of wing exercises; and every few minutes, it would jump as though it was trying to take off flying. It could only jump a few inches off of the ground; but it was so cute to watch.

Here's an American Avocet that was at the same wetlands area as the stilts.

And, here's a young avocet that wasn't able to fly yet either. It was doing exercise to build up its wing strength.

Great pics everyone!

Jane, I love the Stilts and Avocet!!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Both adults, actually! They're doing their 'broken-wing' distraction display to lead you away from their eggs / young chicks.

Resin, thanks for the correction. They sure had me convinced that they couldn't fly yet; so I thought they must be young ones. I looked for the small chicks; but didn't see any of them.

Jane nice pics.

When I saw this hawk chasing the smaller bird, I thought to myself, "Oh no, that little bird is going to be the hawk's dinner."

(Sorry this pic is so blurry ... they were really too far away to get a good shot; so I had to crop it a whole bunch.)

A minute later, the tables turned and the little bird was chasing the hawk. That really had me puzzled until I looked at the pictures on my computer and realized the little bird was a juvy hawk. Mom or Dad, whichever the case might be, was apparently teaching the little one how to hunt.

Does anybody know what type of hawk this is? I looked at all of the in-flight hawk photos in Sibleys and couldn't find one that matched the white upper & dark lower wing, and the rusty neck area.
