WCgypsy - I have never seen a philodendron bloom before. How nice that it is fragrant. I too like being out in the garden and getting drifts of whatever is in bloom - for me, it is still the gardenias.

Carol - thanks so much for the additional information. So between the lack of winter chill, and wet winters, the chances of having successful asiatic and oriental lilies that thrive and multiply is going to be rare. I hope all your potted ones do well this year!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 10b)

Soilsandup, I think , or at least I've been told, that the asiatics and LAs should do ok here with good drainage.
Carol

I'm east of you, Carol. I've never had good experiences with the asiatic lilies. Sigh. So I envy those who can grow them. It's good that some have been posting their photos on the Macro forum. They are gorgeous. Never had much luck with tulips either. Daffodils come back, but don't spread, not enough rain. Sigh.
surfcity, I hope to have my front garden looking as nice as yours some day. DH's grass is trying to take it over. I'm about ready to spray it all with round up and start all over again. Just frustrated by that part of the yard. Sigh.
My silly wisteria is blooming for the second time, due to the overcast skies and cooler weather here. Wasn't trying to take a photo of the wisteria but it came out so nice. Pity you can't see that flock of birds hiding in there.
Have more to share, if my internet provider lets me. New provider on Wednesday. Fios is supposed to bring us into the 21st century. LOL!

My Bower Vine is happy. Still have dig out that pomegranite. Finally got that section weeded and the bird seed feeders filled.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Ahhhh! It didn't send the photo, or maybe it was me! AAAAhhhh!
Deep breath, if at first . . . .

A view of part of my b.fly/h.bird garden, and the raised planter. I was able to get a couple more b.fly bushes and a Confederate rose planted.
You can probably see the terror of the farm too. His name is Blackbeard III. We usually call him Jr. I believe he is the one who has been bringing me the dead lizards, mice and once a bird. Usually though it's lizards. LOL! Wish he'd bring in more mice. He is solidly packed Muscle too. That's not all hair. LOL!
More soon. Way behind on posting to this thread.

That planter is looking great, SW!

Look what we found growing on the back 40 today! This is the area of our property that gets looked at about once every six months. :-{ Thought I'd break my neck getting down there, but I wanted to look for seedlings under the Toyon and pomegranate. Didn't find any, but found the little rose bush that was there is now a thicket of roses. I really can't get the color right in a photo. The pink is almost magenta and reflects the light back. They grow about four to a stem - can anyone tell me what type of rose that is? We can't detect any scent.

How tall is it ?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Gosh, Mike, the rose sprawls a lot, but I guess about 2-4 feet? I'll try to get down there and take a photo of the plant.

Meanwhile, I did have some luck with my straw bale experiment! Learned a lot, too. Unfortunately, the peas have been pretty much destroyed by something eating them. Garlic Barrier spray worked great on the beans and beets, though. This is the first time we've been able to harvest anything!

Hey, where is everybody?

Kathleen, beautiful roses...they look like the ones I found in my garden, I had no idea they were there until several months after we moved in and I started tending the garden....they bloom nonstop with very little care!

Here is a little guy grown from seeds - Asarina scandens. First time with those, I'm very hpapy and they're easy!

Finally back in my wonderful South Coast climate. I spent the past week in the hot and muggy midwest and deep south.

I did get a little goody or two while I was there. Got a start for both these Canna.

You're not seeing things the one pictured here has two colors ON THE SAME PETAL. Like a line was drawn on it with red on half and yellow on half. I've never seen that before.

I've seen ones like this before, and this one is certainly striking, but it's not unheard of.

Also got cuttings from my grandmother's rose bush. Not directly. It was cuttings from the one that was at my mom's old house. The new owners were nice enough to let me take some.

My dad used to tell of him falling into that rose bush when he was not more than 5 yo. He'd be 89 if he were still living. So this is something quite special for me. I really hope they take root.

Love the first vegatable report of the season! Thanks for posting all of these wonderful glimpses into your gardens guys.

Here's a clematis Jackmanii blooming. So vibrant.

Another daylily blooming.

Nice clematis, Doss. I don't have any of those yet.
Here's a fairly carefree plant once you find a right spot. I had one that suddenly died, and I could never figure it out. Maybe too much water - it is drought resistant. Lion's tail - a Leonotis, not sure of the variety, maybe leonurus

Here's a closeup of it's neat flowers. Makes a good cut flower too.

Those orange flowers sure glow!

Welcome back DP! Man, that first canna is INCREDIBLE!

I'm totally addicted to cannas.... you can see below, lol

Doss - The sun was just in the right position to light it up.

Wow, DP, those cannas are outstanding. Hope your rose cuttings take. :-)

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Love your cannas Rob. When these grow a little, I'll get some to you. I didn't send pics of the foliage but it was almost as interesting as the bloom. They were a medium/dark green with random near black streaks. Nothing consistent like the variegation on a tropicanna. I can't wait for them to take off.

Kathleen; I used a rooting hormone on all the rose cuttings and have them in a "window box" I used for an herb garden last year. I have 14 cuttings, hopefully I'll get a couple of them to take. I really want to share with my son, just to keep it in the family.

okay, thought I'd pop in with some garden pics... nothing fancy from me, but I'm just happy to not be looking at clay/dirt like last year (we moved in at the end of August)

here are some crocosmia that have just started opening, I have a few other batches, I'm a big fan - just like the hummers.

my big fuzzy giant next to the crocosmia, it has several large hairy buds on it, can't wait to see what this is going to look like in bloom.... the leaves are fuzzier than lambsear.

do veggies count? Some cukes... shared one with Sophia (dd) today on a salad - everything from the garden. She said it was the best cucumber she had ever had (it was delish!)

some Romano Gold beans, yum - I think we'll have these tomorrow. I think my fingerling potatoes are close enough I can sneak a few out and cook up with these.

here are the green beans growing up with the english cucumbers, this is about 6' high .

I won't post anymore - but if anyone wants cantaloupe and watermelon in about 30-45 days I'm going to have a gajillion !

oh sorry - one more, happy nasties - this is so ordinary, but it's right out my kitchen window and I'm so happy to see something / anything growing here. There is also a Japanese Maple Sango Kako that adds nice color, but you can't see it... kindof back in an alcove ( for afternoon shade, which it seems to appreciate)

You've sure done a lot with your garden, Red. It looks great!

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

It does, look great---it DOES!
I think your "fuzzy plant" might be a verbascum. I've read they can reseed like crazy, but I've seen them on garden crawls and love them. Must put it on my "want" list for next year. As I recall, there's a lavender variety that I really like.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I agree with Ima...it looks like a verbascum.
You've really done well in such a short time !
Just wait till next year !

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I vote for Verbascum too! Here is a pink one, growing with a Campanula. It's my first time growing both and I'm in love!

Redtootsiepop, I'm a huge fan of nasturtiums too! I grew several colors this year, but they seem to be happier in early spring than summer.

This one has very pretty bright red blooms. But what I like the most is the blue tone of the leaves....

In the bottom right there is one very pale yellow called "moonlight" or something like that.

Gertrude is LOVELY, Rob!
