My Motto This Weekend

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.
I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.
I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.
I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.
I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.
I WILL NOT BUY ANTHING MORE UNTIL I'VE PLANTED WHAT I HAVE.

UH huh.. I see you all shaking heads and saying "Good luck with that.".

Ginger

ohhhhh.............Clematis.......

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

thhhhhpppt!
I chant something similar frequently, but the truck knows the way to the plants for sale. So does the wallet, and my feet. Head does not get in their way anymore.
It was officially amended to:
I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE PLANTS UNTIL I HAVE A PLACE TO PLANT IT.

(please see disclaimer in exceptionally tiny print at end of chant, annulling any previous agreements I've made with me, myself & I.)

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

I have never figured out the part of the gardener's mentality that can totally stress out looking at all of the things that need to be planted and the lack of time to do it in, and yet can block any memory of that stress effectively enough to allow them to come home with a pile of new plants when turned loose in a nursery.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

PLease do not repeat that to my DH.
Thanks, Ginger

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

As I was passing a wholesale nursery today to get some strawberries, I noticed a hand-written sign propped out front saying PLANT SALE Sat. 8-2. They have oodles of greenhouses. I just might HAVE to make a trip there and check it out. They have mostly perennials and grasses. I'll let you know. Now, what excuse can I use to get out of the house......?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

"Might", Jan?

You will be doing yourself a favour to attend & take note of what offerings they have. You will, most likely, find some very excellent deals, which will preclude you from requiring an excuse.
Brain is not responsible for actions of Wallet, even though Hand is involved.
Wallet & Hand are in collusion.
Plead the 5th...

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great, Katye. Now, if I don't forget about it. Kids are coming that day for a cook-out. I will not forget, I will not forget, etc.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

But maybe if you just take a quick 10 minutes to look and see HOW good a sale it is . . .

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

OK...Case in point. I DID NOT NEED ANYTHING ELSE AS I STILL HAVE A TON OF ANNUALS TO PUT IN THE GROUND. I went to Lowes on my way home tonight to pick up some lime to wage a war with the horsetail. The car I drive this time of year significantly limits what I can haul, but it just so happened that I was driving DH's truck today. Could I help it if they had some absolutely beautiful painted ferns on clearance? One gallon, not too horrible looking, $2.99. How could someone in their right mind walk away from a bargain like that?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I think the only way to assuage your guilt is to send one to Sally. Then it was really just a selfless act of generosity, I think. (wink, wink. I'm a master of justification. Watch and learn . . .)

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I am in deep trouble on this count. There are always plants languishing in pots long enough that I should have waited until they went on clearance and then bought them. The problem is that I don't know if they will still be there when a sale comes around. Well that is not the real problem, really it is that I too buy things with no place yet prepared to put them in the ground. I have dutifully chanted the pledge in Ginger's first post to no avail.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Kathy, Believe it or not, Sally was one of the first things that popped into my head when I saw them! Now if we could only lure her to roundup (with her mom of course) then I could nurture it for her this summer and she would be all hooked up this fall! And you are GOOD with the justification! Maybe you should start a new thread along the lines of "Dear Abby" only "Dear Kathy." I could use your services as I am not very quick on my feet! (Yes, I am the one that will wake DH in the middle of the night after an arguement and say "OH Yeah? Well..............". It takes me a bit of time to come up with a comeback...got that from my Mom.

Mauryhillfarm, the only think that keeps me from being in the same position as you are is a very large yard that still has undeveloped edges!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm not so good that my ability to justify what I want is really a GOOD thing . . . :-)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL, what a totally great thread.....I have been so...ummm... indulgent....this year, and oh yeah, do I have stuff to plant. And I really don't know where it's all going to go. I just hope I can keep everything alive until I figure it out.
MHF, now that is a dangerous-and effective-justification- What if it isn't here later? Augh, that'll get me every time....

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I want to go to Round-Up ..trying to figure out if I can get away with time off for Round-Up and the Miss Rodeo Oregon try-outs.....Since the sibling that does this is in France I am in charge of holding the candidate's horsie when she is giving her speech and such.

And, the ironic thing is that if RJ (daughter) finds a bargain too good to pass up, she always picks up a few for me too. SO.........if my resolution tries to hold up, hers will probably fail, or vice versa. DOUBLE TROUBLE!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

LOL on the double trouble!!

I didn't forget about the plant sale. They have 38 houses in operation. grasses, some perennials and liriope. They will be out every Sat. in front of their house.
Sooo... I got a hypericum, 'Albury purple', Perovskia, lavender 'hidcote' and astilbe 'sprite' these were smaller, but very full and healthy.
DH just kinda looked at me funny, cuz I still have a few things I got in April that I haven't planted yet. I think I need to make a new bed. (for the plants, that is)
I also picked up some fresh strawberries and asparagus at a farm. Delicious!!!

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

Great News!!! I just ran out of annuals and need to get more!?? Julie, did you say Lowe's?

Eugene, OR

My heart leaped when you said the price on those painted ferns!!! And one gallon, wow!! Thank you for thinking of me. I'll keep my eye out for another bargain. Even if they aren't too good looking now, next year will be better. I got most of my hostas from a local nursery that didn't get the slug bait out in time, bad for them, good for me. Half price, they looked awful!! Now they're marvelous. Took this pic last summer.

Linda, I got mine at Fred Meyers. LOL

And I also have some that aren't planted yet, still not sure where to put them.^_^

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Ginger, it would be fantastic to see you at roundup! Hopefully you can swing the time off. Siblings and big events kind of have the edge though, don't they? :(

Jan, envious of the fresh berries and asparagras. Soon come here, but not yet. I laugh at the comment about DH looking at you strangely. Just found a thread here on Garden Talk titled "you know that your are a gardener when" that had several comments about things like that. Well worth the read if you have time! I can relate to almost everything there!

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/946322/

Azorina, I am so jealous of you being done! My front deck still overfloweth with stuff that needs to go into the ground, and I don't even want to talk about what is still in the greenhouse! Thought we would have less to deal with this spring as we are still fighting the "funk" that has been hanging over our moods this last year. Not so...still too much to plant, it just doesn't look as good as when we are joyous about tending it. Mom is planning to lure you over for dinner or such sometime soon (I think with a gift from McClendons maybe?)...some stuff may just find it's way into your car while you are not looking!

Sally, If it wouldn't have cost more to ship one of the ferns to you than you could buy them for normally, you would have had at least one on it's way to you! I love to buy stuff on clearance (big yard, small budget!) that I know will bounce back just fine with a little TLC! Lowes used to be one of my favorite places to get real bargins, but they hadn't had deals at all for the last few years. Must have a new garden manager now, as there was some stuff that was just an incredible deal! Love your hostas! Nursery can't sell them if they look like swiss cheese, but it can make those of us who are willing to wait a year do the happy dance all the way home!

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Az....Sally's right....Fred Meyers in Bonney Lake has some awesome stuff right now too! Hint Hint!

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

I got a bunch more annuals.......I'm behind once again. Could be worse........I could have a greenhouse.
PNWMountainGirl will have to let me empty my trunk when I get there before she ........or the sneaky gardener down the way, can load it up.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE PLANTS UNTIL I HAVE A PLACE TO PLANT IT.

quoting myself is scary especially since I seem to have ended up with an excessive amount of annuals, and no containers. What was I thinking??? Why, I seem to remember there's a caveat:
"Brain is not responsible for actions of Wallet, even though Hand is involved."

phew! glad that's resolved...

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Katye, Sounds to me like you need to make a trip to a garden center to get some containers. Uhh Ohh!

I am patting myself on the back....I went to Home Depot (for sprinkler system repair parts, but of course went in and out through the garden center) AND Costco, and did not come home with ONE plant!!! I think that that is literally a first for me. I don't expect to be able to duplicate the event, but will write it down as an oddity in my garden journal!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

My variation of Katye's mantra from the weekend:

I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE PLANTS UNTIL I HAVE SOIL TO PLANT THEM IN THE CONTAINER. I still have a stack of pots and plants to go and no more soil... I can't believe how much potting soil I've used this spring. Oh well, off to buy more "dirt"!

Julie, LOL! I love it! I've taken to pointing out to DH the trips that I don't come home with plants- I say almost the very same thing......I take every opportunity I can find-Trader Joe's, Target, regular grocery store, Petsmart, Costco.....to point it out... :)

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

RJ forgot to mention that she did come back with a couple of garden ornaments, however.
I WILL NOT BUY GARDEN DECORATIONS UNTIL I HAVE ALL OF THE ONES THAT I NOW HAVE BACK OUT OF STORAGE!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Busted . . .

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Wait till she has a moment at work to catch up on this forum!!!!!!!!!
It's awful to live down the road from a tattletale like me!

Susybell, I love it! I had never thought to count THOSE shopping trips! Fortunately (or is that unfortunately?) we never have the out of dirt excuse as we buy by the truckload.

And Mom, this thread didn't mention anything about garden ORNAMENTS....that is a whole other topic! And I would have to edit your motto slightly to read

I WILL NOT BUY GARDEN DECORATIONS UNTIL I HAVE ALL OF THE ONES THAT I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED OUT OF THEIR BOXES AND IN A HOME IN THE GARDEN AND THE OLD ONES BACK OUT OF STORAGE!

I still have a few Collections Etc boxes hidden in the trailer that I had forgotten about until last weekend!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I think our local hardware stores and groceries have figured this out and are taking full advantage of our addiction. For years they have placed attractive toys and candy right by the checkout counters where weary parents must needs be stopped next to them waiting in line. Now they all have nursery plant sections on the way from the parking lot into the front doors. This is unfair entrapment. I can hardly go get a loaf of bread without purchasing a pansy.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

what happened to 1/2 price pots?
did the company go out of business?
Do you know of a nursery that carries really great containers?
What about cement pots - any good places for these?
I need containers - large 24"+, and so far no luck.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

"I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE PLANTS UNTIL I HAVE A PLACE TO PLANT IT. "

You should have read in the other thread where the woman snuck out at night and poisoned patches of her DH's lawn to make room for plants ......

Post the link!!

Too funny!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Looks like I missed a whole chunk of posts up there. Thanks, Ginger, for reposting it. I'll check it out. I'm always up for a good laugh.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Katye, There is a place in Allyn, right off Hwy #3 that make and sell cement containers, benches, birdbaths, etc. They have a weekend sale over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Their seconds are 50% off and you can get good deals. Aggregate

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

thank you so very much, Willow! I will check them out.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Lol, Julie, everyone, this is such a fun thread...that link was hilarious

MHF, yes, you're completely right about grocery stores--I'd be in trouble at TJ's if I was into orchids. So far, though, I am resisting those-whew!

Katye, I can think of a place or two down this way with heavy glazed ceramic pots, but getting them home would be prohibitive at the very least...there has to be some place up that way-Seattle has everything, although the place in Allyn sounds really interesting, especially the half-off sales...

I'd like to find somewhere that has an extensive Italian Terra Cotta collection. One of a set of Terra cotta pots I bought years and years ago is falling to bits and I'd like to replace it.
