A Collect For Clubwomen

For many years I was a member of The Women's Institute, an organisation that was conceived here in Ontario in the late 1890's. Its' original intent was to educate country women in such items as health matters, etc. It grew to be a Worldwide organisation called Associated Countrywomen of the World. Anyone of any, or no religion was and is welcome.

What I remember most is that each meeting began with the Collect I have posted below. I think it expresses in its' way, what so many of us feel.

A Collect For Clubwomen


Keep us, oh God, from pettiness,
Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Let us be done with fault-finding
And meet each other face to face,
Without self-pity and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty is judgement
And always generous.
Let us take time for all things;
Make us grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses,
Straightforward and unafraid.
Grant that we may realize it is
The little things that create differences,
That in the big things in life we are one.
And may we strive to touch and to know
The great, common human heart of us all.
And, oh Lord God, let us forget not
To be kind.
