Holly and Rics Swap Followup Plant Questions- "what is...?"

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Clay,
The small light green one with orange speckling on the upper right under the Sedona is called Freckles. The lacy one and the other trailing one I got originally from Critter, but I'm not sure what their names are.

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

I would say that is Chocolate Drop, I did bring some to the swap in June.

By the way my Freckles from the swap is doing well. I'll be taking cuttings soon from all my coleus (except the ones I grew from seed) so I'll have them to winter-over. My collection is growing.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Clay---The word "hirta" just jogged my memory!

Yes! Gloriosa Daisies are the ones called "hirta"---the perennial ones are the "Goldstrums".....

Sorry, can't help with the names of those little trailing coleus... they originally came from a local nursery, no name on the pots. But you might be interested in knowing that they are quite sun tolerant! I haven't found a spot yet where they're unhappy, as long as they get some water.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Above I asked about this plant/bush? that came from the swap and was stuck in the pot with my jasmine by my DH.

Now it has blooms and might be easier to identify.

One more ID (for now). Did someone give me this at the swap or is this from my own seeds.

Just to let you know that I am getting serious about keeping track of all the id's that I am finally accumulating. Went to a flea market and got a whole box of sturdy hangers and one miniblind that I am cutting up for plant markers. Bought a labeler from Craig's List and am in the process of ordering the tapes for it. I don't think that marker will last on the blinds. Anyone have suggestions?

Anyone know the name of this pretty pink flower?

I guessing something like a ground cherry/ Chinese lantern--something may even be accidental? It resembles the Datura or the nightshade family- or are they one and the same?
Oops not the pink one, the yellowish one with dark center. The pink, could be Hibiscus. ? Rose of Sharon?

Use a pencil on your miniblinds for now, it will last well until you make better labels if you want .

I wrote an article a while back on labeling methods & suggestions: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2306/

My two personal favorites for temporary labels (that can hold up a couple of years) are *industrial* black sharpie or silver metallic sharpie (great on dark pots). For permanent labels, I've been going with Avery clear laser labels on metal garden markers.

That pink one does look like ROS, but I'm amazed to see blooms on such a young plant. It likes you!

DIng, Ding, Ding, I think we have a winner. Here is a pic of my Chinese lantern. Sorry a bit fuzzy.

I deserve a bonus prize !! Never grown one myself. I feel smart!!
Too bad my smarts don't get the laundry done, that I'm neglecting.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wish I had the type that turn red, mine don't they are basicly weeds and I pull most of them. But always leave a few because I like them anyway. Guess that is why I have so many to pull every year. LOL

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

That plant is the nemesis of my front shrub bed. I never planted one. A seed or piece of root must have come in a pot from a nursery. I rip rip rip all summer. I've dug the soil a foot down and 8 feet wide and have replaced it. I've used 7 or 8 types of poisons it. I've used salt, bleach & boiling water on it. It still thrives.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I'm getting rid of that chinese lantern thing right now!!!!!!

Thanks guys.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

HollyAnn, your lobelias are finally adjusted, perked up and are blooming now :)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Roses, I'm glad. This is the 3rd summer that I'm battling it. It has spread from a single plant to an 8' radius. It sprouts up between the foliage of my blue rug junipers and comes right up through the centers of my dianthus plants as well as grows right up through the middle of my Galliardias. It is a beast.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I grew the orange ones from seed... and luckily kept them in a container... went from 3 plants to something absurd like 18 in one year... I looked at Randy and said what would happen in 3 years... after that they went to the trash

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Onewish, right now they are probably growing very happily in some Jersey landfill.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you might be right... funny thing is the container broke... and I actually took the whole wrapped up thing out of the pot.. placed it on my driveway in a shady spot.. and it lived on for a few months like that.. exposed roots and all

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Roses, I thought that pink flower might be some sort of Mallow. Do you think this might be it?

This coleus came from the June swap, not sure who is the gifter. Looking for an ID. It's the one with the green and cream leaves.

Stormy, I am really enjoying the Coral Cloud Heuchera, it has been blooming all summer long by the water garden. All the others are just chilling out in there new home, setting down roots.

And I got a cosmos from NisiNJ, ? if you are on the boards N. when did you start them from seed? It has been blooming for quit a long time, last time I grew cosmos it was almost end of fall before I even had a bud.

LG it came with a tag that said twist & twirl... even though most of them have red on them... maybe it was a sport of it... not sure... I have a red & green one as well

it will get very tall... like 3 foot... I attempted to make a standard out of it... and failed... but going to try again

Allison, Thanks for the quick response. It does have some red veining in the leaves. I shows nicely in this combo container, giving the container a verity of leaf structure.

no problem... it does look great! ... so many of my cuttings are noids... glad I knew that one

I bought those two at agway... towards the end of summer... discounted to $2.00 each.. both already full grown and just begging to be standards... couldn't pass them up

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That was the problem with my coleus plugs, no idea which ones they were so no idea how tall they would grow. They are pretty and colorful and I will probably get them again next year if I can.
Did anyone get some of the marigolds and did they grow for you? I was very pleased with these and will also get these again next year if possible.

Stormy,

I think that you're right about the rose mallow. I threw so many seeds around the one day that I came back home while I was helping my daughter with her back surgery, knowing that I would need help identifying them. I thought that this might be some kind of perennial so I was about to take it out of the pot with all annuals. It is an annual and I will leave it there.

I do like it, so now that I know its name, I can get more seeds next year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I did get some of those marigolds.... and thank you Holly... they are the best growing ones and did not get eaten up like my others...I will get a photo when I get a chance

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow wow wow... who gave me the cosmos that is almost 5 foot tall now???.. not blooming yet but huge!!!... just wondering what one it is

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6a)

Holly, is that the french vanilla marigold (or something vanilla)? I had one years ago that reseeded for a time and then we moved and I haven't bothered to replace it as I was a "perennial gardener" now (1999) and not planting annuals. I've learned since then that some annuals can reseed themselves into being "perennial" in the garden. **Note though that unless it does it naturally, I suck at starting seed.**

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Holly: We took some of your "vanilla" marigolds and they are sturdy little bloomers. Thank you.

Onewish and ladygardener: I think the cosmos we brought to the swap was Burpee's Sensation Mix...

(Edited to add: If you use the link below try reading the product reviews!)

http://www.burpee.com/product/annual+flowers/cosmos/cosmos+sensation+mix+-+1+pkt.+%28100+seeds%29.do?search=basic&keyword=Cosmos+Sensation+Mix&sortby=newArrivals&page=1

It was part of a "Designed Garden Collection" packet from Burpee, and these cosmos were definitely intended for the BACK row in their design! I don't know when we started it from seed; the months all seem to run together now in my memory, and we didn't document the date.

oh I am thinking mine is taller than 4 feet... way over my head... can't wait for it to bloom... thank you!!!... the diameter of the stem has to be 2 inches thick!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Elizabethtown, So sorry I forgot to answer your ?. Those Marigolds are Sweet Cream. I got them as very small plugs from my Greenhouse co-op and just love them I hope to have them again next year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I love the way your sweet cream & my prism sunshine petunia look together... nice combo!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly -- what is your greenhouse co-op?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Happy, I belong to a Hobby Greenhouse Assoc. and in the spring they order flats of annual plugs. They are very small really not much more than germinated seeds and very cheap. Those sweet cream Marigolds were $60 for a flat of 600 and I took 1/4 of a flat so I got 150 of them for $15. Impatiens were $28 for 350 plants. Only problem was I wasn't 100% sure exactly what colors I was getting as the only description I had on some of the plants was mixed coleus, mixed impatiens and mixed verbena. Some of the plants didn't flower until after they were planted so I just crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I did very well with the tiny plugs and next year will participate again.

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6a)

oh Holly, next year I want some sweet creams at a sweet price! LOL That does sound like an easy way to get a bunch of annuals without paying an arm and a leg. At 2.99 for 6 in a market pack around here, I don't get many annuals any more until July and then they take a few weeks to loosen up and heal.

Roni

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Roni, I am definitely getting more of those next year if they are available.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they are beautiful... thanks again for those Holly... what a great price too

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Lady, I'm really Happy that you are pleased with the Coral Cloud Huechera. It is one of the most vigorous Heuchs and certainly a favorite of mine.

Yesterday I was so excited to find that the Beautyberry Bush that Wind gave to me has pretty purple berries!! Thank you Diana!

Happy, the Hardy Begonias are growing well and started blooming last week. Thank you

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)
