Holly and Rics Swap Followup Plant Questions- "what is...?"

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hey--Jill and Chantele----

I have not ever had a Bromiliad of my own--but was passing over all the inormtion i have learned in al my years working in Greenhouses.....

Cannot, personally, swear that it works......but.....?????

...couldn't hurt, right?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The terrarium did make a great fruit-ripener! ;-)

Miata, that shredded umbrella is such a cool plant! Hey, did you ever get a hunk of mint? If not, I'll dig some for you any time... Maybe you'll get a chance to drop in after work today...

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

The shredded umbrella was one of the very first things I ever planted when I got the gardening bug and it's still one of my favorite plants today. I think I joined DG a year after. No Critter, I never did get any. I've got errands today, but how 'bout I stop by next week. I'd rather have a proper visit than a grab your mint and run :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You're welcome to grab & run, LOL. But a proper visit is good too, of course. And any time you "need" to pick a bunch of mint for anything, well, you know the mint all along the driveway is Chocolate Peppermint... so feel free to harvest, any time! (Same goes for the garlic chives by the front door!)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

The garlic chives you gave me last year are doing great. But when I come over I'll scope out your yard to see if there's anything new I need ^_^

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Just got a call from my friend Jane, she had the best time at the swap. and got some very nice plants, thank you all. So did Vickie.
The call was about my Helichrysum that I gave out at the swap. They are a silver leafed plant that I told everyone was a Straw Flower. Well they aren't. When I looked up Helichrysum the first thing I found was straw flower and I remember thinking that wasn't what I had expected to find. But I never did really look at the info on straw flower. Jane called and asked are you sure that is what you have and did you look at the Licorice Plant. I said yes they do look like those but that wasn't what came up on my search. So I did another deeper search and looks yes they are Licorice Plants. Sorry for the mis-ID.

Wind, My blue eyed grass flowered today. So excited.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My blue eyed grass is flowering, too! It's so sweet. :-)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Now that I think about it, I think mine's MIA. Oh Critter......

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You can't have my blue eyed grass! LOL Actually, that pot from wind is probably big enough to split. Or was it something else you need?

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's OK Jill, I thought you already had a plant going. I haven't actually looked to see if mines gone, I just don't remember seeing it. The memory is the first thing to go :(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll sing to it, and it'll grow twice as fast. Wait, you've heard me sing. Perhaps I should refrain. ;-)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Would that be a refrain from "Jesus Christ Superstar" or one of the other show tunes we were singing on the way up and back to the swap. UH OH, did I say that out loud? That was supposed to be our secret. My bad! (Can't get the songs out of your head again now, can you!)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--I took 3 of your "Straw Flowers"---remember? Now I have to look up and see what and how a "Licorice Plant" grows....I could still move the ones I planted.....They went in my "YUK" bed--as Straw Flowers have usually survived in there....I like the blooms for my Potpourri.

Anyone have any info to share on the licorice Plant?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL "I've been living to see you... dying to see you, but it shouldn't be like this" SO cool you got to see that production! Next road trip, we bring CDs for a real singalong... ;-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Fa-la-la-la-la, Sing....sing a song...make is simple to last your whole life long. Sing of good things...not bad. Sing of happy...not sad....sing...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hah.. maybe we need Karaoke at the next party...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh absolutely!!! ^_^

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Count me out. The plants would wither!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, Not sure if it is exactly this one but should be similar. They do have a great scent. I generaly plant mine in pots with the lantana.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, my--Holly!
NOW what do i do???? It seems to grow quite wide and clumping! No room for that in my garden.....
I could do one of them in a pot.....Put something bright in the middle.....maybe a Dragon Wing begonia? My poor Angelonias are still minute--but they would look pretty with the silvery white....
Decisions....decisions.....

G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've seen them in pots, and they're wonderful... nice contrasting soft silvery color/texture. I think you can trim them as needed to keep them in bounds (can probably stick the cuttings, too).

Philadelphia, PA

i think i might have figured out my mystery plant, but it's not how i remembered it. It isn't out yet, but it looks like gooseneck loosestrife (lysmachia) which some people hate for invasiveness, others like.

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Mid. I have that one, It can take over. I usually pull it out of the area I don't want it in. The flowers are quit nice. I have seen a picture of a bed of it all by it's self in a lawn, and they just mow the lawn keeping it in check.

Sally:

Sorry it took me so long to answer your question. I just read this thread today. The seed packet for Mrs. Maxwell's Big Italian came from Gary Ibsen's Tomatofest. Here is the link with the description:

Nisi- Thanks! I'll give it a big stake. Your plants are doing very well!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the ID on the Lipstick Plant Critter & Chantell. It's a pretty little thing!

A question about the black pussy willow cuttings-- how long should I let their roots get in the water before potting them up or putting them in the ground? The same question for the currant cuttings, too. They're getting little nubbins.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Sheesh....I was gonna pick up some of that Licorice Plant at a plant stand I go by but I didn't detect any scent...maybe this one is different...????

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I found one that I still can't identify. No tag. Any clues?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ah... that looks like one of my cracking overwintered deli "pots"

Did you get a balloon flower from me? Look for writing on the side (think I see some), might say "Blue Balloon Flower" or "Platycodon."

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Critter!! Good idea to save some of those Deli containers!!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Nisi thanks for posting the tomato info :) We just got yours planted yesterday in a new raised bed. It's nice to know that one is an heirloom, I'll try and remember to save some seeds.

Philadelphia, PA

Take it back, I don't think it's a lysimachia (though i've never seen one up close.) It hasn't been spreading that fast either. And it's less showy.
The flower is 3/8 of an inch long (at most) and is a tube (after curled-in petals open) with the TOP petal divided in three smaller sections, two same size petal ends on the left and right and very slightly larger on the bottom (but they're all fused at base.).
Can't seem to find any pictures on line like it. A bit like an upside down lobelia or something.
will have to borrow camera to take close up.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My friend Jane has these, she is sure they came from our swap. Planted in black cell packs and not marked. Can anyone ID them?

Not from me, but could they be little eggplants?

Philadelphia, PA

o.k. here's a picture of my mystery plant.

and here's a closeup of the flower itself (better than I can see with my glasses). The flower is twisted sideways: the unusual petal end that is spli is always on top, though sometimes there are only two lobes.
It's nothing that dramatic, but really rather pretty in a quiet way.

Any ideas?

Cute little fuzzy baby - isn't she?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey where's my post? I know I commented on the little hairs in the bloom, which must have a technical name and might help ID. By the way, did you try the ID forum? Esp now with some bloom photo.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have another pot of plants that have come up and are growing---BUT...again, I have NO idea what they are....i know I seeded these....the tag has completely faded!

The leaves are fuzzy. Please HELP! I need to plant hem in a bed somewhere.....
