is that what this is that hatched last night??? Sure is a little spitfire. Running around brooder already, biting my fingers and neck, and playing tug of war with my clothes. Have 2 more pipping but are in no hurry. This baby was pipped for 2 days upside down and from the small end of the eggs.I found a piece of shell and looked at the egg. It was pipping against the wire in the floor of the bator. I took it out last night. One of the 2 pipping now is the same way except it is not upside down. Any one had any eggs hatch out the small end??
If not a Pom the other choices of my mixed eggs purchase are
Toulouse
Embden
Pilgrim
Roman Tufted
Brown Chinese which I am sure it isn't since I have already hatched out 4 in the last few months and I begged the guy not to include any lol
Saddleback Pomeranian Goose???
Oh I love those pics! The lil feet are too cute. :)
no tufts when they are born Sandy???
No tufts when they arrived from Ideal hatchery. They were hatched on March 10 or 11 of this year. They are just starting to get the tufts.
I really like these geese. So far, they are friendly towards people but will announce to the world when someone comes into the yard! I can pick them up and carry them around and they have no problem w/ it.
Looks to me that you have a Pilgrim goose their.I have 14 of them.If may be a female because it has gray on it.Male are yellow.I will post a picture of one of my babies.
In the picture i have the two geese, pekin duck, mallard duck. The goose in the picture that has the most gray on her is a female.I don't know about the other goose it is not as gray as her so it may be a male in their with her.
That might be a male you have their too.
Donna, that looks like 2 white male Pilgrim geese.
oh no so they are all males??? Geesh think every goose egg I have hatched has been male. Will having all males be a problem???? I know it will be a problem if only 1 turns out to be female with all the males fighting over her when breeding season comes around. I think the Brown Chinese is male but don't know about the Embden and my Toulouse is male I was told from the person I got it from. Maybe the buff one will end up Saddleback Pom because the other 2 are really gray the buff one has always been buff colored. Guess I will have to find homes for 2 of them if they are all male pilgrim
So sorry about your baby RoseGirl. Hope she ends up o.k.
Thank you all for the info on my babies
Donna, they don't look like mine at that age.
Donna, just wait and see what colors they will turn out to be.Why don't you get some females? The ones outside we have 7 girls and 4 boys plus the three babies we have down in the den.If you don't get more girls yes they will fight over that one female.
Thank you RoseGirl I will refer back to these pics as they grow
My Embden has turned out to be a White Chinese grrrrrrrr it has grown a hump in the last few days
Donna, you are very welcome. They grow fast, they were only 2 weeks old when we bought them back in April.
well I tried to post 2 more close up pics but for some reason they are not coming up
Donna, you may have all three Male Pilgrims.Yes,we have about four of our Geese out of 11 that have messed up wings. We thank the ducks did that to them when they where in the pen with them. Not all of them are messed up.I will take a picture of them tomorrow and show you.
Cody
so some have the gray and others are pure white??
Oh lord what am I going to do with 6 male geese!!!! the Brown and White Chinese have been going at it then challanging my 2 yr old male Toulouse for dominance. Seems kind of early for 5 &8 month olds to be doing
Donna, get you some females.Mine never fight and i have 4 males and 7 females, because i have enough females to go around.
Yes,or they too may get the gray. That is what i like about this breed you already know what they will be before the feather out.
Donna, when i let mine out in the mornings for a bit they stay in a pack. When one goes somewhere they follow. They won't go far from the pen right now,but when they get ready they go back in the pen.
mine roam all over the yard with the big geese when I let them out. They hate me locking them back up in the evenings. Will have to get rid of some to get females. DH said 6 was the limit. He is not crazy about them because of the noise and poop
That is ture, but they make great watch dogs.Around here we live in the country and we have to lock ours up.I wouldn't want anything getting them, because they are still babies. They are good about going back in their pen.I lock my Mallard ducks in the little pen so i can leave the gate open and they go back in their.
Donna, you could always keep a male out of each breed and get a female to go with the males.Yes,they do poop alot but we have 7 and 1/2 acres for them to rome in time. With them still being babies they stay close to the pen. They are messy animals, but so cute.I know everytime i take a picture of them their pool is always nasty.I change the water every other day and that evening it is nasty again with them and the ducks getting in their.
I change my pools every day for the ducks especially now that it is so hot. I set up a pool for the geese since my pond is shallow hot and drying up. Already lost my new Chiloe Widgeon male that I got for Christmas and none of the females eggs hatched. I used to keep the geese in half of the duck cage. I blocked off half but my Toulouse went across it attacking my ducks when I hatched the baby geese so big 3 geese stay out for now and baby out during the day. If I can ever find someone that will stay on the job and finish my new duck cage I will put the geese in the old one. I have $2000 in a new duck 17' x 40' cage between materials(wire, wood, concrete, tarp, and shade cloth to cover all and labor) that was started 2 months ago. I was paying them $10 hr, suppling Gatoraide and lunch and can't keep them working. Young adults just don't want to work. My husband is spitting nails especially since he has been working 7 days a week to pay for it. I have 4 1/2 acres 1/2 wooded but is not fenced and the front is all cleared and open to the road so I keep them down between the house and pond
Donna, sorry that you lost one.My Geese grow up with the ducks,so they are use to all of them.My pen is a 16' x 36' and it is in three section. We are adding on to ours to.We have a pond in the very back,i'm sure they will find it one day.We had a total of 35 or 36 ducks out their. That is why the pools get so nasty fast including the geese with the Mallards in the big area.I hope you can get your pen build soon.
I am moving mine because when we get 6 to 10" of hard fast rain my pond floods the cage 4' deep in water and it is only 6' tall. Then I get to swim winter or summer to care for them. Didn't know it when we first bought the place 3 1/2 yrs ago. It has flooded 3 yrs straight now. This last time in March we got 7 1/2" of rain in 2 hrs. I was swimming at 3:30 a.m to get the geese out because their heads were touching the ceiling. Then we(DH & I) got to swim chasing new born baby Mandarins for 2 hours since they were able to float out about the tiny mesh wire of the nursery part of the cage to the pond. Not fun. So DH agreed to (finance) build me a new cage up by the house since he got a area cleared out. I like the fact that I can check on them out the kitchen window if it ever gets finished. I have Ringed Teals, Chiloe Widgeon, Mandarins, European Shelducks, A Silver and Regular Fulvous Whistling Duck. I gave away my Wood Ducks. They are not friendly and very nervous around you and the female was a egg dumper. She wouldn't sit her own nest. My old cage was added on to twice lol as I got more species of ducks
