(Zone 7a)

Lea, I am so sorry - sending thoughts and prayers to you and your family, too

SingingWolf - your mother is in my thoughts and prayers, too.

(Zone 7a)

My seed starting has been more sluggish than my slugs - they are very hungry critters right now, and I have a feeling that other gardeners lurking in this circle may not exactly be providing gastronomic delights to their slugs in as great a magnitude as more frequent posters. Just saying that even under these sad conditions, it was nice to hear from ya, PamSue and SingingWolf. I hope to chirp up more here, myself. Waving at the regulars and wishing everyone to look after themselves, too.

Did anyboidy esle get any of the Hibiscus re d Shield seeds from co-op and grow them? Mine are growing up but not familar with this particular cultivar and wonder if it needs to be pinched or if it will branch and do its own thing.

I got apot of that think it calle d artmesia Joy stick and it bloomed liek crazy. Anybody know if it make s seed and where I collect it from? I think it abotu done blooming and also wonderign about dividnign it up what th ebest way to do it.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I've got the Red Shield Star, and although it germinated fine it's barely grown an inch. In fact they're looking downright puny. I planted every single seed assuming I could save seed from this year's plants for next year, but I'm wondering if they'll ever reach maturity.

Sorry, no help on the artmesia.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I think most Hibiscus wait till it gets pretty hot to really start growing. 'Red Shield' is the red leaved annual type isn't it?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Red Shield is dark colore d leaf. I wodner if it gonan be an annual or a perennial. Hoep it turns out to be a perennial. Maybe I be lucky and for down here it will anyways.

Lalla mine was ina tiny two inch pot seemed like forever and then stepped up to a 4" pot and gave heat and full sun and then they started goign to town.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Star, my artmesia has seeds kind of like the yarrow, really fine, I have the lime light and the silver whatever that is, just wait until the pods turn brown and crush :) They can probably be WS that's the way I sowed my lime light.

Thanks everyone for your wishes :) Dad is in a better place now and that black cloud that followed me around while he was in the nursing home has gone there with him, just like a big load being lifted off of my shoulders I hated him being in that place so much he was so active even though he was 85 he still took walks and sat on the porch wishing he could cut grass, I'm sure he is at peace now and that makes me feel a lot better, I'm starting to get back to my old self now. just a lot to do so I still won't be on here as much but had to thank you all for your prayers and wishes, it's so nice to have friends like you and it means so much to me :)

SW, I've been saying prayers for your mom and you hoping that everything will get better for the both of you too, I'm always here if you need to talk too, it's rough to go thru with a loved one but you hang in there and keep God in your thoughts and it will help you make it thru these trying times :)

Will talk to you all later but will be watching and trying to get caught up :) I love you guys! You are just awesome!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Not sure what the dat eis today , but HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHELE!

Another rain , thunstorm soaked day to try and get through. ; (

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Im suppose to get some rain on wednesday I hope so everything is turning to dust lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

we need rain here in Lake Delton. We have this pollen ... it's like mustard green colored 'dust' all over everything -- every one's allergies are starting to act up .... we need a good 'washing' to get rid of this stuff... plus it's pretty dry here.

DH was saying they may get rain today at home.

just heard the forecast.... we are expecting storms over night... *Buddy hates storms*
but if it washes away the dust... that will be great.

I want to tackle a project up here... i brought up a bunch of my WS jugs and i'm going to try and create a butterfly garden on the grounds here... where our flag poles are... there are some shrubs and a lot of Lily of the Valley that we need to get rid of ... there are 2 nice clumps of creeping sedum that will stay....

i brought up 2 lil pots of Black Eyed Susan, Honey Bee Blue and some White, that Verbana that starts with a "B" and i can never spell or pronounce ... but it's an annual.and some White Swan ConeFLower... OH and a Lavaterna Silver Cup. i think that is it. but should be a good project for the week.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Just wondering if anyone else has started seed collecting for the fall swap? I've started with some salvias and johnny-jump-ups and will add some tidy tips soon! Also told my daughter we need to go for a walk on a street nearby where the entrance to the office park has some purple salvia greggiis that I want to snatch some seed from! Maybe I'll get enough of those to share, too! What a wonderful cycle this is.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL........ zone envy!! i dont have much blooming yet.... wont be collecting for a few months.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

That is funny Terese. Of course, I still have some flowers that aren't blooming yet. I did notice new blooms on a few plants this week, though. Asarina Scandens "Joan Lorraine" has blessed me with her first along with double blue pea vine, catmint 'Walker's Low', agastache cana, pink/white cloeme and love-in-a-mist. 'Party Girl' mini hollyhocks is "fixin' to" pop open, too. Still watching for others that I am sure are summer bloomers, although we are in the 90's consistently now, I think. It might as well be summer!

Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

I've been loosely following along, been mostly busy getting all my edibles (peppers, tomatoes, basils) going, but this weekend I blitzed my planting, and have most of it in the ground now...now, hopefully we get this rain they are forcasting, because the ground was really dry.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I am so glad that I didnt plant mine on the weekend got so busy mulching that time ran out since last night I had to cover all the plants with sheets it hit 32F and had frost this morning, so today I will now plant all the vegies since the temps will go to nightime of 50F which is what we should have for this time of year

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

wow Mona... what is your last frost date? seems late. We are mid-May, though it has been a while [many years] since we've had a late frost.

i think last week ... .i've lost track of time, could have been 10 days or so ago... we got cold up here, low-mid 30s
but we did not get frost where we are.... i find i'm pretty protected by all the trees on my lot ... when other parts of the park may frost [especially in the fall] we are fine where we are at.

i still have not planted any of my pots yet.... just have not had the time yet. though many up here have planted their annuals early to mid-May already. I should get to it this week... i hope.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

its usually the 15 of may but the weather has been strange around here we had some extremely hot days in march and april, but its over now so I started with planting the tomatoes this morning and will plant the basi this afternoon

Hi, guys, ~~~please, I need a little advice....

I'm planting out some of my seedlings today and my little zinnias are a bit leggy, so when I plant them in the garden, should I plant them deeply, like they recommend tomatoes be planted?

It seems like that would help the zinnia grow extra roots and a nice strong stem, but maybe not. Any advice??

Thanks. T.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I would not go as deep as tomotoes but do put them in a couple of inches to help them that is why I use a fan in the house to make them stronger now did you harden them first or are you going from inside to in the ground

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I feel for ya on the late frost Mona. We had 2 of them here....the last one was only a week ago. Thank goodness I had warning for THAT one. *sniff* LOL!

Hey y'all (Neal in particular if you're around.) Neal sent me seeds for "species dahlias" which I assumed were what I always refer to as "bedding dahlias." Are they one and the same? What exactly is a species dahlia?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Mona, for the zinnia tips. II think we are OK as far as frosts go, but the nighttime temps are still going up and down.

I had the Zinnias sitting outside for a couple of weeks so they should be OK. I planted them 2 inches deep and they look happy as clams in their new flower bed.

Now for the tomatoes. I think I'm a bit late on all of this, and I don't seem to have the vigor and stamina all of you have! But the thought of yummy heirloom tomato salads keeps driving me onward in the garden!!

Did I say somewhere above that I ordered about 30 packets of seeds to plant out in my new wildflower bed? I bought them from Everwilde Seeds in WI (or MN?). I read very good things about them on Watchdog.

Spent the day deadheading, pruning, cutting back, transplanting, and trying to do all those things in the "Well-tended Perennial Garden" Book (Tracy Aust). It really made a difference in how the garden looks! Now I'm ready for the butterflies!!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I been goign aroudn singing that old timey song, Ain't gonan rain no more, no more, no more... Oh geez. We haven't had but oen day of a break in the rain and now have al lthat mess form flordia up here adn thunderstorms. Everythign here is so over soake d ad damp and no sun havign a real battle tryign to get things form molding it that bad here.

Can't even get things in the ground ecaus e it too wet. Last year was so dry and we was already rationign water and this year so far nothign but floodig and more flooding.

I startign to colelct some seed s to on a fe wthings that been bloomign but if don't get soem bees or pollinator s nto gonan have many seed s this year to pick from.

Do ya think I can put some Dahlia s behind some tomatoe s and peppers and have them do ok?

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Ouch. Spent 5 hrs this morning digging up some small shrubs and huge clumps of liriope, revamping a bed by my mailbox. Gonna hurt tomorrow, but now I have a blank canvas!

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Star, I had yesterday off work. There was a 70% chance of rain, I thought, there goes my gardening day. But we didn't have one drop during the day. :o)
I still haven't planted out my peppers since Critter says she doesn't put them out till June ... hate the waiting.
It rained last night and will rain today, but it's just normal rain for us.

Yesterday I bought one of those sports mouth guards. The dentist has been telling me for years I need a mouth guard from them, but insurance does't pay for it and it is $$$. Well, for several reasons, its been stressful the last couple months and I've begun breaking a crown. I decided to make my own mouth guard. I slept with it last night ... not too bad. Can't say my jaw feels any better yet, but I expect it will take time.
Anyone else try this?
