Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #36

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Well, we have had plenty of water here! TOO much in fact, but NOW of course it is hot and dry....... May was way above normal rainfall - had very few days out of the entire month that it did not rain, but June will probably be extremely hot and bone dry. My plants are already complaining about the sudden change!

I had thought by the time it came time to put them in the ground I would have this nice organized plan of what to put where, color coordinated etc.... NOT ^_^ In fact, but the time it came time to plant, I couldn't remember what most were even supposed to look like! how tall, or short, or color or anything else! So, I just planted.... and IF they make it, I will worry about relocating later. We had so few days we could work outside they just had to go somewhere!

The ONLY things I knew where I wanted to putting it was the Standing Red Cypress and the Strawberry Fields and , of course, those are the two that didn't even germinate!!

Genna

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Geena... those are 2 that i can not get to germinate either.... though last year, late summer or something, i got ONE Strawberry Fields... .it was still in the Starbucks cup when winter struck. So - who knows, i may get 1 again this year. but Cypress Vine... 2 yrs running... zip nadda nothing.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lol same here about thinking by the time they need to be planted - I'd have a plan. : ) Tcs you made me remember I wanted to start some cypress vine seeds! Oh no - another thing I still need to do - lol. ; )

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL Meredith.... i think there are A LOT of seeds i never got too.... that's the problem when you have over 200 types.
Most will have to wait, unless they are perennials, then maybe i'll still do them this year.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Well, this was not a cypress vine that I was wanting but standing cypress...... http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62372/

Anyone have any extras of it................

Genna

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Welcome back Genna!

I was thinking that there are several that participated in the swap that we haven't heard from in a while. Has anyone heard from Chele?

Tonya

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

I haven't personally heard from Chele (badseed?) but she did have her new baby boy and she was pretty busy with him. I may see her this weekend at the Ohio River Valley RU if she attends.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I think the Chele that was involved in the swap was chelesgarden or something like that, but she lives in Ohio I think. She has three beautiful daughters so maybe she now has a wonderful son. If you do see her, tell her we said hi!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yep Wind T is right it’s Orlaya, now that you have it you will always have it LOL I find them everywhere :) Even in the shade I have some that I have been mowing over and they are about four inches high with a couple of blooms on them lol I do love them though just wish they bloomed longer. This flower is really a weed I’m really curious as to who decided that is was a flower to sell seeds to :) But then they do sell a lot of weed seeds and I think I buy all of them, seems like my beds are full of those kind of flowers but the birds like them so much lol

La, I just went thru my petunias and cut the flower stem all the way back to the regular stem, if you just pull the flowers off they will still make seeds if you are a little late pulling them off. I also cut my petunias back a little most of mine are still in six packs hoping to get some into pots today lol But they were looking much better a few weeks ago than they are now without planting them.

I just planted my lisianthus (thanks Star :) with my orange bells that I got from tunik (thank you tunik :) the blue and orange should look really pretty together!

My thoughts of an orange garden are on hold for next year :( I’ll do good just to get the weeds out of that garden around what I had planted last year lol

gen2026, nice to see you on here again :) You know if you take a #2 pencil and write your names on those they don’t fade, my problem is the critters walking over them and breaking them! Think I need to do labels out of jugs for next year at least those are more flexible.

Meredith sorry I missed your birthday, Happy belated one! :) BTW, the carnation gold yarrow, it’s not yellow it’s a pale pale yellow almost white just looks dirty to me I’m so very disappointed in it, I’m letting mine grow for this year and if it looks the same for next year I’ll probably pitch it to the compost pile :( Sorry I haven’t gotten your plants out just been so darn busy :( This is not one of my usual years as you well know I’m sure :) I haven’t even gotten into the dahlias yet! I have one from the bag that has stretched out to about a foot now lol So something tells me they are still alright lol

Thanks mygypsyrose for the tips with the pipe I may try that sounds simple enough! I hate to try and depend on someone else!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lea I don't expect you to have time to send plants out ,with all your going through now! I didn't even remember you telling me you'd send them! Please don't worry about that. You are so sweet to think of me. : )
Gen I wouldn't woory too much about not getting the standing cypress started. I have tried them a few times now and they are very straggly and sparsley bloomed for me. Perhaps in your zone they'd do better. I can check my seed box to see if I have any seeds left. Actually I do know I have some because I collected them and they are another one I haven't gotten to. D-mail me if you want some.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Our weather seems to have jumped from winter to summer in the last few days. Some of my poor little seedlings have gone from freezing to being cooked in the last couple of weeks. I am desparately trying to get them planted and trying to protect them from the sun. It's been 90 here the last couple of days, we're so not used to this! Our norm is 60 for this time of year.
Here is my big stupid question, several of my jugs have more than one thing growing in them. Could they be weeds, or maybe I had little seeds on my fingers when I sowed them? I used brand new bags of MG. I honestly don't know I am planting! I will post pictures tomorrow. I am very pleased with wintersowing so far. Thanks everyone for the seeds!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If the "extra" seedlings in each jug look the same, they are probably weeds. There's one weed that pops up in "new" mix pretty frequently for me (unless I sterilize the mix, which isn't necessary for WS)... I don't know what it is, but I've learned to recognize it when it sprouts. Sometimes weed seeds manage to blow inside during the winter, too.

Browns Mills, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yep, I have a certain weed that grows in mine too. I know what it looks like now and can pluck them out. The first year I grew them thinking they were plants until I realized that they were ALL around my yard, lol.

TooFewAnimals...I have my Siberian Iris growing around my Septic field. I wanted to hide those stupid white pvc pipes that are an eyesore in my yard, So I planted them around the pipes. The ground is more moist there under the mulch, so they grow well. I think I'll have to check into getting some of those fake rocks for covering them. Or try to make some myself...

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh you guys I am finding sooo many surprises! I have plants popping up that I have absolutely no memory of planting! I think part of the reason is that last spring I traveled to OR to visit family and I was in a terrible mad scramble to get things in the ground before I left. I started plopping things anywhere I could find bare dirt and when I got back home a week later everything was lost in a tangle of weeds and knee-high grass.

I have foxglove! (will foxglove rebloom if I dead-head?) And at least 4 different colors of columbine. I've tried starting both of those several times in the past and have always been unsuccessful. Or so I thought. LOL. I'm so glad I keep decent records so I can pull out last year's spread sheet and try to figure out what some of these other mystery plants are. I do recognize the sea holly and OMGoodness I had no idea that would get so big! And I have some absolutely gorgeous burgundy Sweet William Another surprise I found is reseeded calundula and 4 O'clocks (although I started enough 4 O'clocks to landscape a small village and really didn't need anymore. LOL.) I'm going to have to snap some pictures of some of these beauties.

I am finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel as far as the weeding and planting goes. If I can have just a couple more days of uninterrupted work I think I can get it whipped. I still have more plants than I have space so I asked my parents if I could fill up a few of their sparser beds with my extras. I recon I'll toss a few my neighbor's way too and hopefully that'll empty out the trays.

My veggie garden is starting to show signs of life too. Normally the only veggies I plant are toms, garlic, and peppers for salsa-making. But SingingWolf had so many fun things that I expanded this year. I don't have much space in what I call my 'edible garden' but I planted some of her gourds and even squeezed in a couple rows of popcorn and indian corn. I had some old zucchini and squash seeds that I never got around to planting so I added a few hills of those and some burgundy okra from last year's swap.

Does any one have blooms yet from the coneflower seeds I sent? I suppose it's still too early but I can't wait to find out if they bloom true...or at least close. Some of my established coneflowers are close to blooming, I suppose that's what made me think of it.

Hi Genna, glad to see you found us again! Re wintersowing annuals, I just don't anymore. Our growing season is so short that I run into the same problem you're having. It just takes them too long to get any size to them, and by the time they do autumn is right around the corner. I wintersow almost all of my perennials, but I start the annuals inside under lights.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

LOL Lala. Isn't it excitign when ya can finalyl take abreather for amoment and enjoy the flowers and the hard work.

next week gonan be pulling seed otu and tryign to get more perennials started for next year and find th esee d to start getting thinsg ready for fall and cool winter crops.

I have never ha d coneflowers from seed bloom the first year, btu it just may be me, I usually, have them come into bloom the second year.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I even started my echies in november and they still didnt bloom the first year but the second year they got huge and game more blooms than usual so it was worth babying them for longer also found that foxglove does better if started really early and mine did bloom the first year

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

breathing doesnt start for me till the end of june when the girls get out of school then I put all gardening aside till school starts again and then its bulb time planting and then removing the summer bulbs

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LeBug! You can't call Orlaya a weed, can you??! (-:

I think mine is really pretty, giving me a month long bloom right in the front of the garden along the street among the bearded iris, alliums, etc. So, am I growing a big bunch of weeds right in the front of my house?!? I'm embarrassed that I gave it a glowing review in Plant Files!

I think the Europeans grow Orlaya a lot, and although it is a member of the carrot family (Queen Anne's Lace, etc.) I find it much more garden worthy than QAL, etc. I was thinking maybe the Black Swallowtails would use it as a host plant, too. I do see a lot of little butterflies nectaring on it these days. I bought my seeds from Value Seeds a couple of years ago.

We have been carrrying on our War on Weeds for the past month. Can't believe we have so many and I'm thinking a lot of them came in on the truckload of Leaf Mould we spread in the garden earlier this spring.

Not much is blooming here right now. Rather too green and no color in the garden to speak of. (And I was so hoping something would be 'showy' in the garden for all the DGers coming down for the OhioRiver Valley RU this weekend at our neighborhood county park).

We have had our rain, and now we need a few days of good sunshine to make the summer blooms pop. Our echies are going to be quite colorful this year~~the third year after seed starting. Monardas are ready to take off. Daisies have big buds. No sign of Daylily buds. That's weird and I wonder if the deer got them.

I am hopeful for a bumper crop of bloom this season, thanks in a big part to Wintersowing. I hate to buy perennial plants at the nurseries now that I've gotten the WSing 'bug'!

Have a good weekend of rest and relaxation! Enjoy your gardens! t.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Good morning..... do any of ya'll happen to have this little flower?? My Mother in Law received this from Pro Flowers and their website refers to it as Canterbury Bells or Lavendar campula. It is not nearly as large as what most of the people on the mid south forum refers to as canterbury bells.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/112982/

This says it is hardy in my zone and ever since I saw hers I have been REALLY wanting to try some of it. I asked on midsouth and no one had ever seen it....... thought maybe some of you might be familiar with it.

Genna

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

There are several little Campanulas with lower-growing, even trailing habits. I wouldn't call any of them Canterbury Bells though, since I think that name belongs to the taller C. medium, as you said.

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

Happen to know a source where I might could purchase this particular one?? It was not offered for sale by anyone listed in the plant files, and it didn't appear that any DG's members had it either....... ???
Thanks
Genna

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I haven't seen this particular one, I don't think, but Bluestone carries a bunch of different Campanulas: http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/search.html?mv_session_id=R9FIJVjo&co=yes&ma=yes&mc=1&tf=name&to=f&rf=*&sp=results_pics&st=db&fi=products&mv_value=nametype%3Dscientific&ml=45&mv_value=srchtype%3Dkey&from_search=1&user_specified=1&sf=%3Acode%3Aname%3Acommon_name%3Ashort_desc%3Adescription1&se=campanula&su=1&op=rm&sf=is_coupon&se=1&su=0&op=ne&sf=disc&se=0&su=0&op=gt&hide=1&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

C. carpatica 'Blue Clips' might be similar although without the double flowers (and it can be winter sown if you want to plant a whole border of them).

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Genna I still have a Blue Chips plant (I had 3 but lost 2 just this winter.) For some reason it's never occurred to me to check those for seeds but I sure will this year. I also started some low-growers last year from seed I got in a swap. They're supposed to be blue and white but they haven't bloomed yet so they're still a mystery.

Who has cornflowers? I bought one last year (yes I actually bought a perennial, LOL) and it's just finishing blooming. Will it rebloom? Should I dead-head?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Are cornflowers the same as bachelor buttons? Those are annual for me, although they often reseed.

I got a fat packet of 'Blue Clips' Campanula seed from Fedco for a good price... had a bunch of winter sown seedlings that didn't survive my neglect last summer. I'll try again this winter. I think they'd make a great border planting.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

at my old house I had to clumps of the double blue mini they look like little blue roses so cute they do well with part shade and well drained soil

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

This is my first year to grow hollyhocks and malvas. Some of them, especially my malva muschata, has a terrible fungus on the underside of most of the leaves. Can y'all tell me what that is and how to fight it?

Tonya

Camden, AR(Zone 8a)

scicciarella .... is what you are calling the double mini the same one I asked about in my link? They do remind me of mini roses.... also remind me of bridal wreath spirea - just much shorter and lavendar instead of white.

I would sure love to find a source for it - other than having to buy a 30.00 arrangement from Pro Flowers!!

Genna

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Cornflowers and BBs are in the same family, but the cornflower (at least the one I have) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/381/ is perennial. I just did some Googling and found that is is beneficial to deadhead.

Speaking of dead-heading and campanula I've never had much luck with mine blooming much past early summer - even with dead-heading which is a royal pain. Is that their nature or do mine just have an attitude?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Tonya, here's a home remedy that works well for Hollyhocks:

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Neal! Just what I needed to know. I didn't even know it was called rust. I have already pulled off all the infected leaves on the malva muschata (moschata?) which has left them quite bare. I hope they recover.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

La, I have that cornflower and the white one it was all in bloom after all the funeral stuff so I went out and deadheaded it hoping for more blooms I’ll let you know how mine do, I tied to collect some seeds from the ones that were seeding but didn’t get many they all dropped down to the ground. Just went out and looked at it and it doesn’t look good for it reflowering so far :(

I’ve planted several Blue Clips campanula around and only had one to survive and it’s in the driest part of my front bed. I’m not much with collecting seeds of that one lol That and mimulus I would love to collect seeds from but just can’t catch the darn things!

Does anyone know if I save seeds from the Canterbury Bells if they will come true as purple like I have now? I’m going to try and save seeds for the swap from them and plant some for my self I love this purple! I got these seeds from the last swap but sorry can’t remember who I got them from :)

Here’s the purple one I have and it is beautiful! I used to grow them every year then all of a sudden one year it wasn’t so easy to grow them for some reason they kept dying before I got them in the ground, this year I only ended up with one that got to flowering stage.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/123070/

The white ones are nice for a moon garden!

gen2026, I have a few campanulas but don’t have that one sorry.

t, I think it is a weed originally sorry lol A lot of us on here have them growing in our gardens though, they reseed like a weed lol I have several that has reseeded around the yard lol I usually keep them if they aren’t in a mowing path. I like the foliage too the whole plant is so lacy looking just adorable! I’ve never seen cats on the Orlaya I’ll have to watch, I had that herb that is like celery, can’t think of the name of it right now but had it for years before I started seeing cats on it, it’s a member of the carrot family so maybe eventually we’ll see cats on it.

My daylily buds are just starting to show. Some flowers seemed like they bloomed way early this year and some seem like they are so late! Most of my plants are blooming now just waiting on a few.

I need to get on here more often I end up writing a book when I do LOL And I still have some catching up to do but I'll have to do that tonite lol I'm going back out it's beautiful here today!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Lea I think the Canterbury Bells might have come from me (at least I sent some,) but I don't remember if the seeds I sent were ones I'd collected or if they were left from the commercial packet. If they were collected they must come true! I'm glad you asked about them - I think that's one of my 'mystery plants' that's about to bloom. I usually forget about them since they're bi-annual.

I'm winding down my plant sale and starting to plunk the leftovers in my own garden. I've done well with all the mixed containers, but still have gerberas coming out my ears. (I still have coleus too ... which I listed in the marketplace if anyone's interested, LOL.) I'm just sitting here drinking coffee waiting for the sun to come up so I can go out and attack. I'm planning a no-interruption, all-me day today and hope I can at least finish the planting. I'm wise enough to know that I'll never finish the weeding.
;-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes La, that probably was you I got the CB from , I have grown them for years but never save the seeds so that's the plan for this year :)

Ditto on the 'all me day' lol If I can just put up with the heat, I'm starting early too! Well this is early for me LOL

I have petunias, more coleus, a lot of extra coral bell seedlings that are just wonderful in my book so I don't want to waste them and dahlias and cannas to go yet just hope I get finished the day is ending with hot muggy weather today. I put my dirt by the front step along with other potting supplies last night so when I get my pots done the neighbor (he he) won't have to far to carry my big pots to the porch LOL Weeding? That can be done anytime we are having chances of rain all this week so I'm hoping to get that started/done again then LOL I'm learning this year that I'm never going to catch up with that darn weeding!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I"m finally back home for a few days.... TONS of weeds to pull and TONS of English Marigolds to pull ... i posted on FreeCycle to see if anyone in my area wants any. I have hostas to get in the ground.

Lets see...... My Dames ROcket is almost done blooming.... i actually missed most of my Poppies, and the Blue Flax are in full swing and look stunning.

some more of my WS stuff germinated, most is busting out the tops trying to get out any holes they can.... Tomorrow will be a planting day.... gosh, i hope it does not rain. OH, i have some sort of white daisy blooming too.

thats it for now... only about 2.5 hrs of day light left... only came in for a sec.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Star, can you tell me anything about growing requirements for the Cineraria? My googling is giving me mixed information. Is 10" tall about right?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

tcs - can I expect first year blooms on the blue flax? Or are they going to wait until next year?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Sorry Lala. Thos e are commercial seed that I had brought ne w for me this year where I fell in love with the pic and wante d to try something new. Soona s I cna fidn my catalog cna let ya knwo what it says abotu them.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Meredith... they are second year bloomers.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks that's what I thought but couldn't help but hope they'd be this year. Does anyone grow Oxeye Daisys? I have some that I started thinking they were Shasta Daisys, they are very pretty but I read that they can be invasive. Am I going to regret growing them?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

the first year i did Shastas... they did not survive the winter.

so, last summer i took all the seeds i had and spread them in that huge ice cream bucket...i think i got about 10-12 plants. I planted them closer to the house and they survived.

WHen i was out with the camera, i forgot to take a photo, but htey are not even in bloom yet.

heck -- i'm exhausted, but i still have one hour of day light... gotta get my butt back out there and pull some weeds.
