Spring Swap 2009

(Zone 1)

cactuspatch: Beautiful photo's of those blooms! Yes, if your rubra has lightened in color since you got it, it's probably getting too much sun. In the past I've had a few get bleached out so I moved all of my carnosa's to a shady spot, no direct sun anymore. I've learned a lot from the good folks on this forum and my plants and I appreciate the good advice!

No apologies necessary, this swap was about friendship and sharing! I have a lot of plants and the two carnosa cuttings you sent me are great! As you grow your collection, you will have more to share in future swaps! These plants are sooo easy to get addicted to with their lovely blooms and sometimes awesome fragrance!

Lin

Knoxville, TN

First off, my package to my Hoya friend will be a little late. I will go out Friday night or Saturday morning and should arrive Monday. It has been one of those weeks that everything that could go wrong has. I will add extra cuttings to make up for my tardiness.

The one thing that has gone right this week is that I was lucky enough to receive an amazing box from my good friend Ric today. Anyone who has been lucky enough to trade with Ric knows he is one of the most generous people in Hoya land. He treated me with 2 plumeria cuttings (one in full bloom and highly fragrant), 4 orchids and a philodendron I have never seen before. 3 of the Dendrobium orchids were in spike with a couple blooms open. Ric, my friend, you are a jewel and I love all of the treasures you sent!!!!! Many, many thanks to you and to Mark for arranging a great swap.

Mel

(Zone 1)

Mel: It sounds like you got a great surprise package from Ric! I did a small trade with Ric last year and was very pleased with the generous cuttings he sent me, all very healthy and I got them all to root ... Whew, being new to Hoya's I was sweating it! What color is your Plumie? I have three or four left out of eight cuttings from a year ago. I planted mine in the ground and they rooted and one bloomed last year. I lost some to a couple of freezes we had this past winter. The one that bloomed had a burgundy colored flower, and really nice fragrance. No blooms yet this year but hopefully soon ... I am real curious as to what color's I will get! You got a great mix of plants in your trade package, I know you will enjoy them all! What kind of Philodendron did you get? That's another plant I could really get hooked on! I was at my sister & brother in law's in South Florida earlier this year and took a cutting from one they had in a container in the front yard. They are not into plants and kept asking me why I wanted to break off or cut a piece of that old plant? LOL, they were here visiting a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe I rooted it and it's put on growth! I plan on taking another cutting next time I'm there if they haven't thrown it out yet! They have a habit of tossing plants they get tired of, can you believe it?!!

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

My hoyas are in a bathroom window that faces southeast and is glass block, partially blocked by a tree too, so no direct sun. I just repotted it, so will see if it greens up again or if I need to move it. Thanks for the advice plantlady.

I don't know what to do if I should get a plumeria, never rooted one but the thought of it is exciting. meltn, lucky you with the fun package and wasn't it nice to have it when you are having a week like you mentioned! ; )

Bergeforsen, Sweden

I would love to join in. But that is not so easy maybe, beacuse I live in Sweden.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

I had a trip out of town and didn't get to the PO box until this morning. It was like Christmas when I got there and saw not one but 2 boxes. Alison from Alabama really out did herself! I would have been happy with the 2 cuttings in the first box-a hoya and a euphorbia. I only sent 4 myself afterall--I feel a bit unworthy now! But to open that second box with the fully rooted hoya plant plus the other goodies was delightful. None of the hoyas were any I have. I feel like Karma was smiling on me as I had just this last week added ric rac orchid cactus and the Queen of the Night to my "want" list which is a notebook I carry with me to remind me to be on the lookout for those plants when I get to a nursery. So she had no way of knowing that she was fulfilling my dreams! Thank you so much ; ) Alison and thanks to you guys here at DG for organizing this swap. Hopefully the cuttings I received will grow bountifully and I can pass more cuttings along in the next swap. Joyce

Joyce, you are welcome.

Very happy to have sent things you wanted.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know if Ray is on dave's garden?

Ray was the recipient of my cuttings/plant and I had asked that he send an email when he got the package to let me know if everything made it OK. I have not heard from Ray at all, nor have I seen him post either here or on the Stemma group. If there is a problem, I'd like to know so I can make it right.
Thanks,
Mike

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Mike,
I have no idea if Ray belongs to this forum. But maybe you can d-mail Mark since I remember him saying that he had people from three different forums as well as his
private email.
Good luck
Lourdes =)

(Zone 1)

Mike,

I haven't seen anyone named Ray posting here on DG, and I'm not on the Stemma forum enough to recognize the name from there. I think you should shoot Mark a d-mail and ask him. I think he mentioned that his list of swappers came not only from DG, but a couple of other forums and his personal e-mail as well. I'm surprised Ray didn't respond if you included your home e-address in the package. Hopefully Mark can contact him and you will hear something soon.

(Zone 1)

LOL ... Lourdes, you are younger and faster than me!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

No Lin, just got lucky LOL

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Thanks so much. I will shoot Mark a D-Mail.
Thanks again,
Mike
(p.s. yes, I did include my email address.)

Turnerville, GA(Zone 7a)

Well....the great mystery is solved and I received a BEEEEEEYOOOTIVUL box from Ceedub..Christine, thank you! No, I didn't have any of the hoyas you sent such generous cuttings of!!! Can't wait to grow out the Hibiscus and the Duranta AND the glass plates are perfect!!! Seared Tuna platters...perfect, as I said. Thank you so much. Joni is here and we both felt like Christmas...!!!

Thanks again. It was a fun Swap. Now...back to growing so we can have another soon....

Carol

Carol I'm so glad you got the parcel okay and am delighted you're happy with it all. To be honest, I'm flabbergasted that you have none of the hoyas I sent (but at the same time a little proud...lol). Everyone posts so many different flowers, but I don't remember anyone ever posting pictures of flowers from those hoyas. The hibiscus and duranta are just delightful when in bloom and I know you can bring them there.

Christine

Shepherdstown, WV

Christine and Carol-

Which hoyas were they?!?! I'm amazed, too!

Kelly

Kelly, they are: H. sp. IrianJaya28, H. sp. Molukken, H. pallilimba, and I love them all .... but then, I love all hoyas .... lol

Christine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Christine....can you email me piccies of the flowers? That would be wonderful!!!

Carol

Shepherdstown, WV

Haven't a clue what any of those look like!

Ah, but they have not yet bloomed for me. sp IrianJaya28 is a very rapid grower, but no peduncles yet, and I'm hoping sp Molukken will flower this year, its fourth, it sure is putting on some major growth.

Here's Sita's Corner's sp Molukken - http://www.sitascorner.se/spmolukkens.htm and here's another sp Molukken - http://hoyas.ca/gal/hoya-sp-molukken

But I can't find anything in all of my resources for the other two. I'll keep looking though, because I'm sure I've seen H pallilimba somewhere.

I'm sure you'll get them all to bloom far before I can with you year-round perfect climate.

OMG! I received my box today from SharonBanister my secret friend. Let me tell you it was like Christmas when I opened the box. What wonderful cuttings she sent. I did'nt have any of the cuttings she sent and they were very healthy and quite generous too. She sent me cuttings of H. Darwinii,H.Cummingiana,H.Longifolia,H.Carnosa w/umbels, and another one with umbels, and my first Dischidia. WOW....Sharon I love them all.....Thank-you so much.

And thank-you Mark for putting together this swap.

And Christmas came today for me in the form of a box filled with hoya goodies all the way from San Francisco. Thank you so much Mark!! They're all very generous and lovely and survived the trip extremely well; they all look garden fresh even. I have only two of them and one is a cutting still so they can go into the same pot once rooted. One question though, you gave me a list of four, but there was five in the box, you little devil. The one you didn't list has lovely bronzed leaves at the trip - what is that hoya? I have a suspicion it might be sp 'Tanna Island'; am I right? Not likely!

Christine

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

I got my package from Meltn today, and it was like Christmas in June. She sent me the cutest little woven hanging basket, and some wonderful cuttings - three of the four I had never even heard of before. One was a heart-leafed lacunosa with the most perfect heart shaped leaves - I can't wait to get that one going. Mel has always been very gracious any time that I have asked for help, and I could not have had a better secret Hoya pal.

Thanks again for sponsoring the swap Mark; it was really a lot of fun.

Doug

San Francisco, CA

Christine, I'm so glad it worked out!
The guy at my local P.O. plus saw the cuttings and didn't want to send them without a proper customs declaration, which was out of the question. I had to take them to the regular PO, where they were too disinterested to look closely or ask any questions.
And your package made it to Carol, so a success all around!
I forgot to label that last cutting, huh. It's odorata, which does look a lot like sp. Tanna island.
Also, there is a red dot on the rooting end of the cuttings- on a few of them it didn't seem obvious to me which was the proper end to plant.
Good luck with the cuttings!
M

p.s. aff. albiflora grows like a serious weed, give it a generous pot and a big, strong support.

Yes, I saw your red marks, that was very thoughtful, and helpful, thank you. I don't have odorata either - I did once but its long since dead and gone. And yes, I will give aff albiflora a strong support, right now it has a kitchen cupboard to lean on, but that can't continue much longer...lol.

And thank you very much Mark for organizing this trade, it seems it was a success all over North America!

Christine

York, PA(Zone 6b)

I guess I am the only one who has yet to receive a package...my fault.
Whomever was given my name as a Swap Buddy...go for it!!!!

Joni

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh dear....nothing received? Doesn't bode well at all!!

San Francisco, CA

Joni, didn't you request that your swap partner not send their package off until the 13th, due to your vaca?
It should probably be arriving soon...

York, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes...yes...after the 13th!
No worries...it's probably on it's way to me already.

Thanks again Mark for organizing this swap...from these posts it was a total success!

Joni

York, PA(Zone 6b)

Yahooo!
I got my package today from Gabi...thank a bunch!
I knew when I heard the mail lady coming in the driveway that my package was here.

The cuttings are perfect and even though I have some of them by name...they may be different?
H. lobbii has been on my wish list and now I can cross it off.

Thanks so much for your generosity!
I knew I was not forgotten...just like to 'remind'.

Gabi, I didn't realize you lost hoyas the past winter...sorry :0(

It was fun but I must get back to my growing...it's what I do!

Joni

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Joni,

You're quite welcome. I was told not to send the package out until the 13th (and obviously I waited til the 15th so the box wouldn't sit in the P.O. all weekend), but when you kept saying you haven't gotten the package (before and after your vacation) I wanted so badly to tell you that I was eagerly waiting to send it out!! It wasn't my decision to hold off this long!!

Glad you got something you didn't have :) I was hoping something in there would be new for you!

"and even though I have some of them by name...they may be different?"
Not sure what you meant by this - do you mean that some of the labels I placed were missing, or do you mean that some cuttings look different than the ones you already have?

Gabi

York, PA(Zone 6b)

Gabi,
No...all your labels were in tact...I just meant that for example H. anulata has about 5 different variations.
I seem to have two and the one you sent maybe a third!

I did not expect it until I returned...perfect timing on your part.

Thanks for a great swap!

Joni

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh how I wish I had found this sooner!! I want so much to be in on a swap and really love Hoyas. i have 4 types, maybe 5
