Spring Swap 2009

Turnerville, GA(Zone 7a)

Okay, I'll add to the clues...my box of hoyas and other "goodies" left for travel in a westerly direction this morning...hopefully it should arrive in my secret swap friends mail box on Wednesday...weather here has been quite warm, so no fear of freezing...and I hope not cooking!

(Zone 1)

I shipped Priority mail so mine should arrive to it's destination on Wednesday too.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

This is my first time doing a swap on this forum. How do I label the cuttings? I just dunked them in alcohol, rinsed and layed on newspaper.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Just label them with their name on some kind of tag that is NOT paper....

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Oh, was this supposed to be a secret? I sent my package today, but I included my name both inside and outside the package. Oops... My package is headed East and then a little North.
I enclosed 5" plastic labels with the cuttings/plant.

Oh my, I didn't realize that is was to remain secret! I just sent mine priority with my return address clearly on the pkg. Oops! It is going East. Thanks for allowing those with common hoyas to participate.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH...I think it is OK to know our benefactors...just not before the Swap.

(Zone 1)

I understood too, that's It's just a secret until we receive it, then we will know the identity of the benefactor .... or enabler!

Shepherdstown, WV

I received my package today! Thank you, Joni! The cuttings are gorgeous and I didn't have any of them! Thank you so much! It's like Christmas!

Hope you're enjoying your vacation!

Kelly

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

My box came today, too!
Thanks Regina. They are lovely. I'm ready to pot them up.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

My box went out today almost directly East and a bit south...went by FedEx.

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

I wish I could have participated in this swap, but I barely have room for any new plants since my move. Maybe next year I'll have a nice place for some new plants

::sigh::

PS Carol's tip of "let the roots go looking for water" was the best advice I ever got for rooting hoyas. I hope that helps some of you.

Tracked the package to my secret friend tonight and found out that it will arrive okay by Friday.

Christine

San Francisco, CA

My box went out today- headed east and north and east then north some more.

(Zone 1)

^_^ This is so much fun! I can't wait to get a couple of new Hoya babies to root and grow out!

I just checked USPS package tracking and my buddy's package arrived at the sorting facility in their city at 5:12p.m. yesterday, was processed and is now in transit to it's destination ... should arrive at their doorstep in today's mail.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I just check the one I sent, says is has been delivered =)

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

OMG arriving already I better go check my box! ; )

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello Sue,
Yes, it was me. I was not sure if we were supposed to write our names, so I only wrote my initials.
I'm glad they got there safe and I'm very happy that you liked them.
Lourdes =)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

every girls wants to grow up to be.

San Francisco, CA

Lourdes, so glad you got your box!
Antone isn't on this forum, though, so try the Stemma forum if you want to thank him.

York, PA(Zone 6b)

You're very welcome Kelly!
I hoped to send ones that were new to you...phew...good guessing?

I leave tomorrow on vacation...very excited to finally meet Carol in person!
Maybe we should hold a convention each year so we could all put a face with the names?
Joni

(Zone 1)

Alison,

I am so glad you liked what I sent! ^_^

Uh oh ... I'm not sure what a box of plants says about me (there was one plant in there that does have thorns, LOL!)The Ric Rac Orchid Cactus: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62665/ I don't usually like thorny plants, but the bloom is very pretty ... and fragrant!

Shepherdstown, WV

Seriously, how fun would a convention be?!?!

Joni, You lucky gal ... getting to vacation in Hawaii and meet Carol in person too! Safe journey ... have a fabulous time!

There was talk on a forum awhile back about trying to have a DG convention of sorts ... where DG'ers from around the country could meet in one specific location ... but I guess planning something of that magnitude was just too overwhelming and it never got off the ground. I know some local area's have what they call Round-Up's where they get together at someone's house and eat, drink and exchange plants. Maybe we need a Hoya Group Round Up? Sure would be fun to get together and meet everyone.

It is nice to put faces to names of folks we chat with on DG ... we've done this on a couple of other forums, posted our photo and our DG username and real name, and tell a little about ourselves. I have my photo on my home page if anyone wants to know me ... I am what you see, just a couple of years older now! That photo was taken December 2007 and I haven't changed too much. My hair was a lot longer (almost to my waist) but I got it all chopped off yesterday ... feel ten pounds lighter! ^_^ I'm a lady who loves animals and plants! Oh ... and I love my hubby too (well, most of the time!)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

You lucky ducks with all your packages....mail takes so long to get here...sometimes 2 days, some times 7...even Priority...!

Yes, I am looking forward to meeting Joni! I am flying up to Honolulu and we will spend the afternoon with Ted and Dorothy Green...then come back here to the Big Island where she will be put to work weeding and brush cutting! LOL. Oh, just kidding, Joni! We will visit gardens, see the volcano, go to the beach?...hang out. I have a feeling that the world may just not be ready for the two of us on the loose!!!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

I got my box today from my hoya friend Doug! What a generous person - thank you! I kept taking them out and it just wouldn't stop...it was like a bottomless box of cuttings and plants!!

Doug even sent me a fully rooted hoya in one of his famous semi-hydro pots with the paperclip hanger - too cool!!!

Thanks Doug!!

Gabi

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

How cool Gabi...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you Mark, I did e-mail him. ;)

York, PA(Zone 6b)

I am lucky that Carol and Bob were gracious enough to say yes when I invited myself to visit them and their island! I do well with friends who make plans...I'll go along with just about anything on a 'snakeless' island.
I'm still walking thru the house trying to spot anything I may need to pack and them off to bed for a 3:45am alarm.

I too am without the box of goodies but I am a very patient person.

A convention maybe a tough to pull off... but I would hope that if anybody came to the Gulfcoast of Florida they would look me up and visit.

Sounds like the Swap is a great success...THANKS TO MARK!!!
It's refreshing to be amoung such a generous group of friends. :0)

Joni

San Francisco, CA

I just received my package!
Thanks Eileen (DG name: imadigger)!
I was especially glad to see the variegated H. acuta- I've always admired this plant, and never gotten around to actually getting one. The generous lacunosa cuttings were a treat too- my lacunosa kicked the bucket some time ago and I hadn't managed to replace it. I never really want to be without this one for long.
Hope your package arrives soon-
Mark

West Palm Beach, FL

Your very welcome Eileen! Glad to know they arrived safely and you like them.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

So happy the box arrived in good shape Gabi! This Hoya swap was a really great idea, and thanks again for doing such a great job of putting it together Mark!

Doug

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

I received my box from Lorna yesterday and I am one happy camper!

All of the hoyas I received from Lorna are new to me with the exception of one and that one that I have is not doing well, so it's great to have a fresh, new cutting to root.

I also received some actual plants that are already rooted - THANK YOU SO MUCH, Lorna! And I received a very nice, rare Epiphyllum cutting as well. It's an Ephphyllum that I have admired for 20 years, but was not able to find, so I feel like I won the lottery - and I did! Woo Hoo!
Mike

(Zone 1)

Hey Mark ... if we all behave ourselves and be good kid's, will you host another swap in the fall?

(Zone 1)

I received my package today from cactuspatch ... all the way from New Mexico! Thank you Joyce! I have H. carnosa rubra (Krimson Princess) but the one you sent looks different, the leaves are lighter green in color, probably has to do with where we live in the country and the conditions. A couple of my rubra's have converted (is that the right word?) back to solid green leaves.
I don't think I have the other one you sent - H. carnosa. I will enjoy growing these two out and anxiously await blooms! Thank you again for sharing! Isn't it fun to know that all these different Hoya's have "roots" or pieces of vines all over the country!

Lin

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

I receive my box today from Carol. WOW!!!! great cuttings & plant and some have buds on them.
I don't have the ones I got from Carol.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for Christmas in June!

Jan

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

plantlady so glad you got it and sorry I didn't have more exotic plants to send. That Rubra was darker when I got it so maybe it needs fertilizer or I need to move it back from the window a bit? http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=hoya&w=8229897%40N03
those are photos of the blooms from that one. I have 3 blooms forming on the other one I sent and will send you a photo of them dmail next week once they open.
