Orchid Nursery Closing

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

There is a commercial nursery that is very close to me. They are going out of business and have opened their doors to the public. They have a large stock at 75 % off sale on all of their Orchids and other plants. The larger size they are selling for $12, and the smaller for $8.
They are located at 31280 Murrieta Rd., in Menifee. They have several varieties, and I'll post a few photos of the ones I couldn't resist.
Believe this was a larger one. They also had a pure white one. I didn't get that one.

None of the orchids were tagged so I don't know what their names are, yet.
I didn't have one like this also the larger size. Couldn't resist it.

This was a smaller sized but still beautiful yellow orchid.

Another small sized orchid. Love the colors, and it smells pretty too!

This one attracted me because of it's white with purple coloration.

Just a small yellow one.

The last small one. So sweet, and pretty. I would have bought more, but that was all the cash we had on us, even used my emergency $20.
They had a great deal of stock on hand, not all in bloom. They may be selling their equipment, but I didn't ask.
Just took my loot and scurried home to take photos.
We gave the solid purple one that started this thread to MIL for Mother's Day. She has a thing for purple orchids.
I thought I'd share this with you in case you were close enough to take advantage of the sale.

Those are beauties and I'm so happy that I can resist orchids....if you'd said salvias I'd be scurrying over there with all of my cash and I'd be in trouble........LOL....

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Saving you money and the trip, wc. No salvias in sight. Other things. I'm just not sure what they were. They had those bamboo looking office plants. They had some containers with small pink flowers. Debated on whether to get a couple of those, but only have so much money. They also had some Asian style garden ornaments, pedastals, statues, like that. Wasn't interested in that stuff.

Hey, that's right down the street! Thanks for the heads up. :)

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

What! Another DG'er in Menifee! I'm pleased and shocked! ^_^
Let me know how you do. Take cash! I know that I'm very happy with the orchids I have, even though I don't know what they are exactly,
hawkarica from the orchid forum said this in reply to my post, "SW, it would be very hard to come up with a name but the most important thing is you have all phalaenopsis orchids so you can take care of them in the same way. They are a warm weather orchid so they like it hot and humid. Avoid temps below 45 degrees. They do best in shade so keep them out of direct sun. They do well in clay orchid pots or you can mount them on pieces of drift wood with some moss. Avoid over watering. I mist mine with a weak fertilizer solution every day but others don't and they seem to adapt. You can look up phalaenopsis orchid care and learn more. Best of luck."
I thought it was very nice of him, to take the time to be helpful.
Enjoy your trip to the nursery!

Wow, you got some beauties! What a great sale, glad you were able to take advantage!

Thanks duc!
Right place, at the right time with $$ in my pockets (and DH's). He knows I go gaga over orchids.

I just stopped at the nursery and they are selling all their orchids at $5 no matter what size. I'm not sure what else they have, although I did see cornstalk plants and some really tall ornamental pepper plants too. They also have some columns, terra cotta asian style ornmental planters or stands. If you get a chance this weekend you might want to check it out. Unfortunately the salespeople don't speak English and they don't know the names, but they try.
Just thought I'd let you orchid lovers know.

I am an orchid freak and live close to Menifee. Where exactly is this place and does anyone know if they have stuff left? Bree

Hemet, CA

Nursey still open,
they still have quite a variety.

Fresno, CA(Zone 10b)

OMG...what a great price but how sad that they are going out of business.....wish I could grow Orchids...my thumbs are mostly green but there are a few plants that I just can't get to work no matter what I do....Orchids, Amaryllis, pelargoniums...mom says it's cause I baby them too much...do they really thrive on neglect...lol... We have an Orchid grower on Hwy 152 between Hiway 99 and 5...I get so tempted but have no desire to buy something I have watch die off due to my ignorance.....enjoy those Orchids all...more pictures those a wonderful!!!

Hemet, CA

Your mom is right. You should go get one and just enjoy it blooming. Maybe water it 3 times a month if you think about it. Remember that orchids survived in the wild with no attention long before man came along. A good starter orchid is a phal. Little water and low light requirements. Good luck. Bree

Eugene, OR

I agree, Phals are the easiest. Just don't overwater and feed lightly. The blooms last sooo long! People buy them as gifts because they last longer than cut flowers.

This one has been blooming for 2 months. Picture was taken after 1 month.

Oh, man, SW . . . this thread just got bumped by Sally and I came in to check the orchids out.

DID YOU BRING ALL OF THOSE ORCHIDS HOME IN MAY, GIRL????? OH, MAAAAAAN!!

They are stunning! How're they doing? Do you keep them in your greenhouse? I have an orchid here covered with pink jasmine and just ignore it. No blooms, no nothing. It probably gets too much water, as well.

Yours are just gorgeous! WOW! Eyepopping!

Linda

P.S. Are you still smiling? That dog is still in my trunk, LOL ROFLw/MBP

Eugene, OR

Is it really still in the trunk? Sounds like me, I get it home, takes a while to do something with it!!

I can never pass up a chance to encourage people about orchids. teeheehee Sounds like the nursery still has plants. It really is a bargain.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Lucky you, Bree! I've been very happy to get such a great price. Sad that the nursery is going out of business.
Twin, I guess I won a smile. I also got a good giggle. Where are those teens? A couple of strong girls could move him too. Banished the pup to the trunk, shame on you! LOL!
Seriously, I've been trying to figure out an excuse to go back for more orchids. They are an addiction for me.
I just moved all the easy ones out to the gh, just in time for our one day heat wave. Talk about wilt. I did take some photos, so you can see where they are living now. They sure were happy today with the humidity in the gh.
BENiGn Neglect, they thrive on Benign neglect. Quit loving them so much and they are so happy. I can't wait to see what is going to happen this summer to them.
My little ray of sunshine. Don't know what it is really called, as the nursery hadn't tagged them and the staff doesn't know. But I ran out of shelf space and wanted it in indirect sunlight. The Chaste Tree doesn't mind sharing the pot for now.

Sorry, I wasn't able to finish posting last night. The computer did the "Can't find the address to DG", thing again on me. At least I didn't get the dreaded BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! LOL!
This orchid's blooms needs a little more support so I placed it in the same pot that the guava is growing in. Sure is pretty.

Thumbnail by SingingWolf
Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Sort of a side view. You can see the shelf full of orchids, the table I set some on and the guava with the orchid with the big white flowers. It was really humid in the gh, and my glasses fogged up. LOL! I guess the camera lens did too a little. LOL!

This is a photo I took at the base of the bananas that live in the gh. You can see my Anthurium, (my improbable plant!), and two of my orchids near the base of the 'nanas. One is purple, just like the one I gave my MIL, for Mother's Day, and the other is white and yellow. Think I have a close up. I'll check.

While many of the blooms have dropped off. Here are some close ups. I don't know what their names are. I really wish I did. I'm about ready to give them they own names. LOL!
I love the polka dots! : )

Isn't this one a beauty. Magenta polka dots and lines all over. Looks like someone stippled it with a paint brush!

I'm trying to figure out how to hang the orchids, (at a reachable height, so I can reach them), from that banana. I think I have to make wire forms that I can attach to their trunks, any ideas?
I forgot to mention that a couple of the orchids with the smaller flower had scent. I should go out and write down which ones those were. Something anyway before they completely loose their blooms. Then I can go back to the photos too.
Sally, you instigator! Thanks, because I do take photos of my plants and where I put them, but I wouldn't have necessarily done that after the initial post I made if you hadn't started this going, again. I think I might as well gather up my recycling and turn it in and call it Orchid Money, and go back and see what else they got.
Oh, one more if I can find it. Not sure if it is an orchid doesn't look like one, but I found it at the same place.

It took me a while, but I found it. Seems happy in gh, but don't have a clue what it is. Last one for now. My internet access is acting up.
Happy Father's Day all!

SW....looks like a tropical paradise!! That last one looks like an orchid. I'll look in my books. About hanging your pots, since you have clay you can put a wire ring under the ring (secure it really well!!) and hook three or four pieces of wire to that, bring them together at the top like you see on hanging plants. Sometimes I buy wire hangars already made up with wires (or use old ones). I have some in baskets that use that type of hangar too. The only problem with the baskets is they have to be watered more often, not such a problem in your green house. But when I bring mine in for winter it's a lot more work, so I don't do that much.

I try to keep photo records of mine too. Some of our people print out thumbnails and put them on a stick in their plants.

Looking really good!!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Beautiful, Jules! Wish I could equip my greenhouse for use in summer, but at least I can keep things from freezing suddenly in the winter!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Fans, Really BIG fans. Even still during the hottest part of the day, unless you like it humid, most people don't go in there. Wouldn't have to water the orchids much lots of condensation in there. May have lost my b.fly orchid. I'm hoping it will make a come back. Let you know if it does. Sigh, rotten caterpillars.
I usually try to swim early in the day. It loosens up my muscles, and then my hair has a chance to dry. Keeps me cool most of the day. LOL!
Thanks for all the compliments. It is turning into a jungle, and I badly need to weed in there.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks to SingingWolf's tip I visited the nursery today! Yippie! I purchased 2 beautiful orchids ($5 each), and also a hot pepper plant. I don't know a thing about Orchids, so I have lots of reading to do. I hope to take pics tomorrow so you all can help me out with what I have. The guy at the nursery was so sweet - I hope they can stay around.

Hugs,
Erin

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Erin, they thrive on benign neglect do not love them to death. Do not water more than once a week if indoors. Get some orchid fertilzer from HD. Outside with our heat try to keep damp, but not soggy. I hope he can stay in biz too. He built all that himself. He brought in people to help with some of the big jobs, but he was the contractor. He is making the transition from flowers to veggies. Hopefully the bank will help him out.
Glad you made it there.
Someone tell Erin about the nursery sale Sunday. Please, have fun. I might just go look if I'm up to it.
