Leaves can transport critters and chemicals also--but it's less risky. I have a friend that dips every leaf and plant that comes into her house, no matter what. She has > 1,000 plants, and after fighting one mite infestation years ago, she's not taking a chance on getting another one. She also periodically dips her whole collection, just to be safe.

I think most people clean both their african violet leaves and strep leaves when they get them in the mail...............GL told me to and so I do..........
I grow from leaves also, but I enjoy plants most of the time.
Pretty violet Jan.When I used to grow I hand dipped all of my plants about every 3 months.Since I have gotten older I don't seem to handle even the fumes of any insecticides or other preventative products.I have a hard enough time, even with bleach.I do isolate everything new that comes in though.

When you 'dip' a plant, do you do the leaves only, or the root ball too?
I always used a gloved hand to hold the soil in and dipped the plant and let the excess run into the soil. Some people actually submerge the plant, pot and all and let it sit in the solution for a few minutes.
It does look a lot like Orchid Lace--but it's not--very pretty though!
Your 'Methuselah' is very pretty dahlianut!! It reminds me a little of a VERY old favorite of mine 'Blue Bender',which isn't around anymore, although if I remember right Bender had different foliage.
