Pretty Kohleria Jannich. The one that I had that the buds kept shriveling up on is finally blooming, although a lot of the buds are still drying.
OOOOH,that's a pretty AV Goldleaf!
Gail, love the picture of your helper and that darling baby! The Streps. are beautiful.too.Darn Cat...LOL.

Love these pictures!!! I never want to miss any post with a picture.........

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I love everyones pictures also.I also really like the the David T. Streps.I have one baby (Purple Peppered),but it will have more flowers open in a few days and I will post a picture then.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am destined not to have Purple Peppered...........I bid on 3 auctions and lost everytime........one of these days in the fall, Lynn, we will have to trade strep leaves. I really got some beautiful ones from him.............please post a pic of her when she is blooming.........can't wait........

I found out that the pic I posted of strep 'Spirit' won a big award at the Royal something show in England so she must be an English one...........here she is again......same picture and she gets prettier every day!

Jim sent me a leaf of her.I sure hope it takes.Fall would be great for trading.Right now many of my Streps. are just rooted or rooting and others are to small to be removing leaves.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Fall sounds good to me as I am really trimming hard the leaves on streps trying to promote new foliage in the centers.......so I will have more flowers...........and I don't have time when potting up to think, "Oh.......there is a good leaf I should send to someone"..............

When they do grow back in the centers, there will be tons of leaves by fall............ready to chop off! (LOL)

That is so cute, the mini's are adorable aren't they? Bonnie, remember when you were here in Florida visiting your sister and we met for lunch and you brought me that lovely Orchid? It's still got one of the original blooms on it! Can't believe how long they lasted! Wasn't it February or March when you were here? I've never had an orchid bloom last as long!

Ibrabec...sweet violet and very nice kohleria Manchu.

Love the ruffling on Hot Time Tonight, gessiegail.

mrsbonnie, what kind of a pretty orchid is that with the long narrow leaves?

Bonnie's little orchid resembles a Mini Oncydium that I have somewhere out on the deck but mine hasn't bloomed in over a year ... most of my plants are screaming "feed me" "feed me"!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lin, have you ever fed your plants using a hose end sprayer? Seems with all you have, that might be easiest.

(Zone 1)

LOL, yes, I have two hose end sprayers - my problem is I'm just sporadic at doing it ... I'm such a bad plant mom, neglectful at times.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie, that is the best! Those mini orchids I have a little trouble with......think maybe they would do better in the house under lights??????

Rob's Shadow Magic is so great looking, I might even get interested in violets again, GL!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lin, your plants look fab to me so you must be a pretty good plant mom after all. I know you are ;-)

Gail, violets are sure enough easy to get back into. Too easy! Future blooms...I know I'm nuts but planted 2 trays like this of violet leaves today and a few more strep leaves also.

Very cute little Orchid Bonnie! And Lin that one of yours has been in bloom forever!
GL,I love your violets! It looks like you will hundreds of babies pretty soon.^_^.
Gail,so you trim Streps. to get new center growth? Some of mine that are not blooming well seem to have too many leaves in the center.Maybe they need to be divided??
Lynn

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness GL,it looks like you could go into the AV business there with all those leaves! Wow, you are going to have lots and lots of beautiful babies!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Too many violets! I've been focused on streps for nearly a year and missed violets so I'm going to grow some more.

ibrabec, I divided a few streps the last couple of days.. On one variegated, I have the big plant and was able to get 3 more divisions from it.

South, TX

My little violets are happy with the big ones in our sunroom.

Gleaf, lovely leaves you have there, future pretties!

What a pretty little Orchid!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Ooooh,,,I like those oncydiums! They look like a manageable size to grow under the lights.

Here is the variegated strep divided today...the mother, 'Iced Canadian Sunset' and the 3 divisions.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Very pretty Strep..Looks like I might need to divide some.

(Zone 1)

So, are those little strep babies suckers from the mom plant that have to be cut off like AV suckers, or do they just multiply like that normally? Sure is a pretty one with that variegatefd foliage!

Sally, love that Mini Onc. 'Twinkle White', very cute!!

I want an Oncidium called 'Sharry Baby'. I don't think it's a mini but it's real pretty and supposed to smell like chocolate! Almost ordered it from somewhere a couple of years ago and never did ... I just might have to buy myself a "Happy Spring" present! LOL. http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week323.shtml

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, you could call them suckers or new crowns which can be divided for new plants.

I can see why you like that Oncidium, Lin. It is a striking looking orchid! Do you have orchids readily available in your area aside from phals?

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Has anyone used a Physan20 dunk (the whole plant) to control powdery mildew? I just picked up a bottle, and I'm reading the booklet that came with it . . . for control of different rots and powdery mildew: "Dip lant and pot in physan 20 solution. Spraying is ok, but complete coverage of all surfaces is important."

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never heard of Physan doing that but glad to know........going to look at my bottle..........

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Personally, I wouldn't dunk the whole plant for powdery mildew on the leaf surface.

For use on gesneriads posted to show safe dilution rate only...

Begonias, Ferns and Gesneria (corytholoma, isoloma, allopiectus, episcia, trichosporum)- Bud Rot, Gray Mold, Leaf Spots, and Shoot Rot.
All phases of culture. Remove all plant refuse or dead leaves. Garden cleanup is important in control. Spray PHYSAN 20 solution before the buds open. Then spray when blossom petals have fallen. Spray when 3/4 of the blossom petals have fallen. Spray again two weeks after petal fall.

USE: 1 teaspoon of PHYSAN concentrate in 1 gallon of water.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi All;
I don't know what kind of orchid this little mini is, i did a trade last year with someone from this web site, just can't remember who & i got 5 of them.4 are still doing well, this is the only one that has bloomed so far, they are all in my windowsill & they seem to like it there. i can't believe your orchid is still in bloom, it was feb when i was last in florida. lol
bonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for that information, GL!

Syrumani is at her violet meeting tonight. She just called me from the nursery wanting to know the name of Alabama Sunset...........

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Do you add Physan to your wick reservoirs? How much per gallon?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

When I was wicking only a month ago (LOL) I used 1 tsp per gallon .................now I am trying another method without wicking........always a new experience.

Ladies ................
you wouldn't believe the deal Brenda has going on strep leaves on ebay.......BMedel is her user name...........she has 3 different sets of 10 leaves each for 19.95 and they are each very good selections. I had no idea she had that many streps.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Bemedel has 4 sets on now. Her leaves are nice and healthy. Thanks for mentioning them.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thank you for letting us know Gail!! You and I could be bidding against each other sometimes. My user name is omaha-lynn.I do not have a seller ID,just buyer.
So far I am not using any fungicides or insecticides in my planting mix or wicking trays.I am thinking about trying one of the systemics, because I know if a an infestion of something starts it could spread quickly.....scary!!
I have not seen anything in the plant area except an occasional blackfly, fungus knat or whatever those little flying things are called. No thrips, whiteflies, mealies,or any sign of mites. Also no mildew.I may be pushing my luck!!
Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am not buying anything because I have almost spent on buying on ebay what I have sold! (LOL) That defeats the purpose of selling............

Just couldn't pass up DT's new streps for 2009 and some that others have offered.........plus I love all the old David Thompson streps. Lyndon Lyons carries a lot of them but it is easier to buy from the hybridizer himself...........

I know some people disagree with me but I am terrified of all things that can hurt gesneriads.....so I rotate miticides between Conserve and AVid about every 3 or 4 months.......and I always worry about mealy bugs in our heat and humidity so use both Admire Pro and Marathon taking turns with them...............

Don't think that people who are as meticulous as Miss GoldLeaf need to worry as much as I do!

South, TX

I have no choice. I can't be around chemicals. I know Marathon is in most violets I buy, but I do not add any. I quarantine before adding to my collection and keep the collection very clean and keep plants spread apart.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, grow your own violets from leaves and you will never have to have a chemical in your house. Most serious growers start with a leaf.
