my collies love fresh rabbit....LOL hurts me to see when they have either gotten a baby rabbit or bird. but I guess that is what I get for having (back when we lived in KY) fed them the BARF (bones and raw food diet.....)

are you going to put your tomatoes in straw bales by your hog panels? that is what I'm doing this summer.

Janet

Gentry, AR

no can't find any straw this year, i'm going to make tees out of landscape timbers and run cables from one to the other so that i can run twine down and grow the mators like that kinda like "CricketsGarden" did in her greenhouse.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I waited to long (had to wait till payday) to get my hog panels for tractor supply and they went off sale.... way to much money the sale was really good. so now I'm rethinking about what to use for the tomatoes to trail up on.

whitebear, that method is called the Clothes Line method.
Use the same method with green beans.

Growing veggies in a hanging basket is great at first, but soon you will have to water 2 and 3 times a day. (been there done that) The squash plant actually does fairly well in a 15 inch basket but have to water twice a day. Grew the hyacinth bean in hanging baskets. They do ok too but have to water 2 and 3 times a day after they get big and start producing beans. Every thing does great in a basket til it starts producing, then its like feeding a baby every 4 hours. Must have bigger containers to hold more water longer and use lots of peat moss. Or a continuous drip system.

Everyone likes hanging baskets but the truth of the matter is most plants out grow the baskets before Summer arrives then it starts looking poorly because most folks cant keep up with the watering needs.
I put my easy wave petunias in a 15 inch planter bowl and used cloth hangers and they still need water every day right now. Next week will be watering twice a day. ( or I will get lazy and fix a watering system on a timer in case I forget to water)

Happy Gardening.

I have had good results with water polymer crystals mixed in the bottom half of the soil before planting the petunias. Just don't use more than the recommended amount, just a pinch per pot.

Tri-Cities, WA(Zone 7b)

Here in the windy, dry desert I sometimes plant in those hanging planters with a reservoir on the bottom, meant for bottom watering. I still water from the top, but the extra water on the bottom gives them a bit more water to keep them alive until the second daily watering. Of course, that's less soil, too, so it's a trade off. I can't keep anything large or productive here in baskets anyway.

Los Gatos, CA

Hi all,

My tomatoes have really stalled. We have been having some cooler weather and it is going to keep up for the week! I hope it warms up soon.

I have used the polymer crystals as well. Cathy4 is right, don't use too many. If they get stuck in the bottom of the pot they plug the drainage holes, and can cause problems.

Los Gatos, CA

Hey, where is everyone? Whitebear, are you there?

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

cleaning my greenhouse, getting ready for fall. Glad to see you all, congrats on getting the land!

Los Gatos, CA

Great to hear form you all again. We are struggling with a lack of water. Our well has slowed down to a stop as of Sunday. We have two others on our property, we had them tested, one is bad and one will work. However, That one is not producing very much. Better then nothing. I don't know if I mentioned this before, My husband and I, had just installed a vineyard last year. We have about 1000 vines. No need to water them in the winter, but now, with the temps in the 90's we have to water them a lot! The good news is, when we get through the first years, they don't need much water at all. So we will have to pray for some rain here this winter!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

imagesoart:

I'll pray for rain, but I'm not familiar with that part of CA. Do you usually get rain during this time of the year. 30 years ago when I lived in El Toro, we never got rain during the summer. I had never seen anything like, seeing as how I'm a native Floridian who usually sees rain almost everyday. I was great for doing things in the summer and never having to worry that rain would cancel it. But now that I'm a gardener, I LOVE the rain...LOL

Here hoping we hear from you that it is raining.

Glad to hear of your increased land holdings, IMHO you can never have TOO MUCH land. Especially since God isn't making anymore....LOL

Janet

ps: I just found out I'm gonna be a grandmother for the 1st time... Baby due in Feb and hoping my son who leaves for Iraq will be allowed to come home for the birth...

Don't forget to keep the prayers going for our military folks. thanks

Gentry, AR

hi guys sorry i haven't been to active. but if you would send up some prayers at about 1:30 central time. my wife will be in surgery. we came in Sunday morning to the emergency room and they found a 6 inch cyst on her left ovary they have already tested for cancer and it was negative "one prayer answered" now all that is left is to get that thing out. so all the prayers would be great. and to reward ya'll for them i will get some pic's of the new land and building on here by this weekend. love you guys "whitebear"
