Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just had to do it.
Everyones gardens look great.
Anyone have early spring pictures of their gardens?
I love the emerging plants, they have that "Buzz-cut" look.

Happy flowers blooming Scicci! Those little flowers are a Veronica Persica or Persian Speedwell. I posted a photo on the Garden Photos of '09 Thread and was told the name.

Sue, that's what I just said in the post above yours...... hee hee

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

are they considered a weed since they are all over the place here, is it something that was planted and got out of control

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

A weed or not that's the question. If you like it where it is it's not a weed.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

ok so now I have another plant that I dont recognize
anyone know what this is

Here's a shot ofmy buzz cut garden. : ) There is a patch where I recently dug out the Obedient Plant that was threatening the surrounding plants. I gave it a new home where it can take over if it likes. :)

Scicciarella, Your blooms are all lovely.

GE, speaking of buzz cuts, wish I could give one to my neighbor's weeds growing into my beds!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The dandelions seem to be having a particularly good year. I have been seeing lots around here - even in yards that usually have them minimally.

I have come across more acorns nuts that are germinating this year. In fact I nabbed one and potted it up.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I get alot of those every year. The wholeneighborhood isa mix of mostly scrub oaks and white pines. We have a few maples scattered here and there. I always get a lot of pine seedlings with a few maple seedlings too. :)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

My neighbor just put up this white fence, so I had to expand my planting area by 2 to 3 feet as the lawn mower can't get back there.

I just finished hauling in all of the soil and look at all of these falling Maple seeds. Guess what I'll be ripping out for the next 5 years?

Jen, I have sprayed that area repeatedly. Only they never plant anything there, so stronger & stronger weeds keep moving in. I've been seriously considering putting grass seed down over there. It was a nice forsythia hedge until 3 years ago when he moved in. He ripped it out, correction cut it down to put up a post & rail fence. No fence ever showed up and he leaves it fallow and never weed whacks.

Meredith, one year I made the mistake of broadcasting Miracle Grow organic plant food in my beds. They became full of 24" tall dandelions!! Took days of digging to get them out and I still have a problem with them in the beds.

Oh man! that's a lot of seedlings! I will be sure to stay away from the MG plant food. That is scary! Thanks for the warning. -Maybe you should put a fence to keep the dandelions out? lol

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Meredith, It wasn't the MG blue water food.. It was their organic food that comes in 20lb bags. Those seeds all fell in yesterday's an today's storms.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Okay thanks, I did get that those are Maple seedlings and MG granules caused Dandelions, I just didn't express myself well. I always worry the weed n feeds do that! They are supposed to be getting rid of the weeds - but perhaps in fact they are adding them ... So then we go out and buy more Weed n Feed! lol

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Mereith, I've been mixing horse manure in my compost & planting dirt. The other day I saw something that looked suspiciously like Oat Sprouts!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I wouldn't be surprised if ti is! I think the manure is a big cause of weed seed. After I ammended a bed one year I had a million weed grasses start growing. It was Id'd as Quack Grass - it spreads by these impossible to find bulbets. Guess what I found out? The little bulbets are edible for people so most likely cows like them as well! Ugh

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

if you want to be rid of the dandies you have to pluck the flowers use the weed and feed and keep plucking the flowers till the plants are dead they excellerate the growth so they die but they are reseeding annuals so if you dont get the blooms well the seed just start over the next generation of dandies so either you have to weed and feed very early when the plants are very small or pick the blooms so no seeds will deposit

I usually have the kids pick all the flowers even the unopened ones before we do it hahahah yes free labor

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Scicciarella, I always try to do that but I certainly can't pick all of his!!!!!! His lawn is a veritible Dandelion factory!!! They also grow 3' tall garlic mustard.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lol I try to get my dd to do it. She is doing much better this year!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

lol you are royally messed up then hahahahah

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

As usual. What would life be without a few challenges????? After this rain, I don't think there will be many more photos of emerging plants. Except maybe in your country!!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

these opened this morning
