This little one was either picking bugs up or getting some rainwater on the rose.
Hummingbird Adventures #7
Okay, in answer to the critters in Harmony, you forgot about me, which makes the total 6. (That I'll admit to. LOL!)
Came down with a cold, and haven't been out much. Even though I have so much to do! Tried to get a decent hummer photos, yesterday, but all I got were flashes of color. So I went back to bed. So I'm really enjoying seeing your babies.
Twin, you may have been taking high resolution photos which record more information on the photo. Since I send and receive and store my photos electronically, I am working on a lower resolution setting on the camera. You should be able to find out the information you need in your owners manual or one of the Photography forums.
Now that bit of info is addressed, Congrats! You're a hummer friend, Linda! He is so sweet and precocious! I really like his personality. Later on you'll be able to tell them apart by how they act as much as their markings. Your photos were excellent. Showed how excited you were and joy in the moment. Thank you for sharing!
duc, thanks for the comments. The black cat is feral. We've been trying to get all the ferals, spayed or neutered. More keep showing up, mostly because they are hurt. I guess they know they are safe here. LOL!
Except for the white dog/pup, Spirit. He keeps trying to herd the cats around. They don't take kindly to that. So staring matches ensue. Right now it is a standoff. However, Griselda, the Calico cat asleep on top of the container is fierce, and she has been known to take on three dogs at one time and win. She might be an old cat, but she don't take nothing from nobody. The black lump in the front bottom of the photo is Daisy. She is half lab and half dalmation. We aren't sure how old she is, but MIL couldn't handle her and foisted her off on us. She is Spirit pup's mentor, and friend. She's showing him the ropes of being a farm dog. Which includes afternoon siesta's.
hugeprops, I am so very sad to hear the loss of your hummer friends home. It may be that if the parents survived that they will rebuild nearby, and have another brood. It has happened before. Please keep us posted.
duc, talk about personality! Your little hummer friend has a lot of charm. I kind of like the thought he was drinking or bathing in the rose. Who was it that mentioned they'd seen a hummer do just that? Sans camera!
Great photos and stories. Really happy for you Linda. Am hoping you'll soon see some activity around the old nest site hugeprops.
Keep up the sharing!

Great photos and stories everyone! I'm playing catch up on these threads, and I've been enjoying getting up to date on all the hummer activities. :-)
Hugeprops, I am so very sorry about that nest. The eggs fell out of the first nest I was watching, and I was so sad. It doesn't look like the eggs hatched in the most recent nest I was watching either. However, I did watch two broods successfully fledge this season. I agree with SW, you'll probably have another nest around here soon.
Zoom was shining bright for you sw!! Get well, this is not the time to have your immune system down.
Note to all my hummer loving friends here-you are ordered to get well and take care of yourselves so we can all enjoy photos!
Cute pictures SW. Don't you just love all the photos with those long tongues poking out? These birds never cease to amaze me. Yesterday I had two very young hummers come up to me when I was standing next to the feeder. It looked like they were checking me out and I was enjoying every second of it.
Thanks Sally, I'm feeling a little better today, and hope to get some things done. Have to pace myself. I go in for my weekly tune up today, then what gets done, gets done. Jonothan is helping out today, so hopefully I can get some rest too.
I've been moving my vantage point around to see where and when I can get the best photos of my hummers. I love the backgrounds on some and hate it on others. I'm learning as I go.
The hummers in your photos are so nice and crisp, and I love all the details duc. Your backgrounds are never distracting like some of mine are. Lighting is always difficult and sometimes the hummers just don't co-operate with you. Ain't that the way of it. LOL!
I'll have some photos to post by the end of the day. Zippy was already in the gh when I opened the doors wider. I think she really likes it in there. They emptied that feeder before the outside one. I might just move them both back in there. I have to get some gardening done. Already having to water. Spring has sprung for me.

Duc, they need protein in their diet also. I have watched them snap up White Flys, Gnats, tiny spiders , and aphids. They are helping you cut down on the aphid population on your roses.
Carol
duc,
Maybe it's the color. I think that they are most attracted to yellow and red flowers. I have seen them working my purple salvia too, and the pink pentas. They also liked my yellow and orange lantana. Maybe they like to bathe in the roses. I just can't get that image out of my mind. Lovely.
Our SweetiePie came to visit. Such a quizzical expression!
Only photo I was able to get of a black chinned yesterday.
I am feeling better today, but they are mad at me, and wouldn't come around when I put new food in the feeders. They'll forget. Another thing is that it is already in the 90's here and expected to hit triple digits today.
Great photos duc! Glad you were able to get some.
WIB,
SW
Talk about liking insects, our young oriole male has been here, tearing at the few flowers hanging near the feeder, which is empty. I just put fresh batteries in the camera, hoping he will come back and perform again so I can get some photos. There's an epi bloom open and he was digging at it like he was mining for gold, I assume to get insects. Very funny - he kept fluttering at the window as if something would magically appear and my cockatiel was getting nervous at this bird that looked to be invading the living room!
You've had a really exciting day at your place haven't you, KC. I wonder what will show up tomorrow! LOL!

Something calm and pleasant, I hope. :-)
I was trimming a Japaneses blueberry this morning in the courtyard. I was in the inner structure of the tree trimming away, with my DG expertise, what branches & bottom leaves needed to be removed to sustain the integrity of the tree. I had been trying to find this nest for over three weeks because every time I came into this part of the court yard I was bombarded by the mother hummingbird to get me out of there. Well this morning, I heard her and just stayed quiet hidden in the tree which was just next to the nest. I did not know that at the time. I had no idea where it was but I knew it was there because I had been buzzed for several weeks. While I was hidden in the tree she buzzes and then settled in her nest. She had as nest in the dead overhang of the climbing fig... I was going to clear out all the dead over hanging fig early in the day but was interrupted. When I saw the nest I alerted the gardener and all others to not go near the area. I will take pictures this weekend. What a great day. I am finally well and back to nor,al. Thank you Heavenly Father and my Doctor/my son.........
Carol, thanks, I'd forgotten about the aphids. We do have lots of gnats which we see the hummers grabbing.
SW, glad you're feeling a little better. I haven't seen my Blk-chinned for a couple days. Hope he hasn't moved on already. Wow, send some of that warm weather this way. We may finally hit the 80's today, but I won't hold my breath.
SK, glad to also hear you are getting back to normal too. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
Yesterday I hung slices of oranges from a pole near a hummer feeder and also on top of one. So far, no one is interested in them-last year they snubbed them too. I had one Oriole sit on a perch and look at the orange, but went back to eating the sugar water instead. Today is the last day I try this. You'd think they'd want a taste!
Our orioles really go for grape jelly - and I've been forgetting to add it to the feeder! Shame on me.
More great shots on here...as usual :-). Hmmm....I might have to try the grape jelly for the orioles. How/where to you put it out?
Here's a not so great shot of a hummer at my Dad's house (Santa Cruz County). This handsome guy doesn't appear to be the Anna's that I am accustomed to viewing. Rufus? Allens? Any ideas?
You all are such great picture takers, more organized than I am that's for sure. I now have 3 orioles, 2 bluejays and a slew of hummers visiting daily. One would think I'd have pictures!
Sure has the rufous color, Sunny, but the green on the head and back? Perhaps a young one or a hybrid? Maybe Duc can tell. Great photos!
weegy, we all love you. So far you can't even take a photo of a baby that isn't blurry, so we understand about not being able to take photos of the birds. (Just teasing you). ^_^You sure take great photos of flowers! Besides, as someone smarter than me said, it's like taking a photo of a speeding bullet.
I don't know what kind of hummer that is sunnyg. I sure do admire his coloration though. I bet he is a welcome visitor for your Dad too!
skwinter, I am downright envious that you found the hummers nest. Good for you! ^_^
Of course now we expect photos!
KC, orioles like grape jelly? How do you feed it to them? Inquiring minds want to know.
duc probably does know what kind of hummer you have sunny. She is a lot more knowledgeable than I am. I think I've seen some photos of hummers that have a similar coloration that she posted.
Go ahead and name them duc. It'll make it easier to talk about them, and they each have their own personalities.
We need to be moving on to a new thread for our dial up friends, been having too much fun on this thread, so lets keep it going at: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/985977/
Hope to see you all there. Thanks to all of you for making this such an enjoyable thread!
