I love this plant and ordered a leaf from Teazviolets myself!!
April Flowers V
It's a fave for me too! I actually bid on it a couple of times on ebay in the past year or so--was waaaay out bid each time! It's on my "when I get my real plant shelves" list. I believe it's a big-un!
Thanks, Lynn. Bingo was about the last time I was here. LOL. I've missed you all too!
I'm not wild about varigated av's, but that Handmade is beautiful.
Sarah
Thanks Sarah! What are your favorites?
Lynn
I'm too new to this to have any favorites. I'm making a very long "wish" list though, after seeing all the beautiful pictures here!
Sarah
Good for you!
Lynn
Lynn, I love Hot Ticket, too...........really pretty pictures you posted. Thanks......
Remember when you stick a strep leaf the veins will always be going up if they are planted in the right direction............
I am sitting here praying that we don't get 70 mph winds with hail any minute..........if we get spared the winds, I am going to get rid of every plant on the front porch. They are not bringing me joy!(LOL)...and I mean it!
Here is a new picture of Franken Dainty Lady.
Gail,
I am praying with you! None of us need more bad storms this year, but they do seem to be on the rise all over the country.
When I first planted Strep. leaves,I paid absolutely no attention to the form of the leaf...how dumb is that LOL.I have since realized the veins always point upwards. Now my question is,how do I plant this one? So far I haven't peeked to see if the bottom (or top LOL) that is in the rooting mix has roots or not.If so,I will be totally confused!
Thanks for the compliments on the pictures ^_^.I'm still trying to learn how to take a decent picture. It seems my DH'S dark burgundy robe makes the best backdrop so far.
Lynn
Wow,
My studio consists of sitting a plant on my DH'S robe on top of the bed and smoothing out the wrinkles LOL
I am laughing at mine!! Doesn't exactly look like a studio (LOL)
Compared to mine,it looks like a professional set up LOL.
Gorgeous Blooms everyone!! I don't have anything new blooming-- will in a day or two. I grew tons of episcia from seed last winter, a couple are iffy--but think this one is definately a keeper a cross between Edge of Night and Afternoon Delight (by Thad Scaggs) The colors are washed out by the flash--and it has a great metallic sheen-- I can't wait til it blooms-- but am wondering what you all think?
Looks like Phoebe to me............but just a guess. She could be Heart Breaker, too. Maybe Jim will come along and tell us. So.......pretty...........Vampire is dark red, too. We didn't get the winds fortunately but I am sick and tired of all these plants I worry about on the front porch..........putting them all on ebay in a few weeks and pack them up..........out they go............and I will just enjoy growing inside.
Gran........that is one fine episcia and good picture!
This happened with babies on several leaves that I rooted, I have found that increasing light and giving a little fish emulsion helps green them up.
thanks gran. I learn so much here! I have articles to read but I am a hands on person so I have to have pictures :-). Is that a blonde thing? Although hubby told me yesterday 'boy, you're getting gray'.. 'you look almost as old as me' I said "well, isn't that what you want?" [I quite frosting my hair]. His hair is snow white ; family trait.
Everyone one takes great picture one day when I grow up I maybe just as good.
well start work last week and its the pits have to work night shift hope only 2 more night this is really messing me up but it is work I have a couple on blooming plants no names so maybe you cane give them to me
The first is Burgundy with a yellow throat
Dimmer
Tommie,
That Episcia is a keeper for sure!!
Sorry,Jan I don't know the name of your pretty Strep.,but I like it!
Pretty pictures Kim.I'm no good at names, but if that red one is pretty dark red it could be Texas Hot Chili. How are you enjoying the new house?
Lynn
Cherl,
I agree with Gran on your pale leaf.It probably needs nourishment.
Thanks!! Glad you like it-- I'll send you a stolon when I send your next goody box;) I am actually thinking about registering it-- especially if the bloom is nice-- photo does not do it justice. Kim your photos look great-- I am looking at my Texas hot chili right now and yours looks identical to it--but one of the Strep gurus should be along shortly ^_^
I don't have access here in this little berg to a lot of things like fish emulsion. Can I add a little more fertilizer to my water? I use about 1/4 ts per gallon of Peter's for my AVs and use it every watering. Is it strong enough?
That sounds like enough fertilizer (IMHO).How much soil mix is in that pot? At least an inch or two deep,I mean.
Fish emulsion is really really really mild and mainly nitrogen which is what they need--I have been unable to find it in the "Big box" stores-- found it at the farm supply here--but--- I will brb with a link where I (you) can order stuff like that and liquid kelp-- AND they ship to PO boxes--(which is necessary when you live in the backwoods where UPS is scared to go;) so many places won't ship to a PO box. Ok here ya go, Ebenshades Garden Center: http://www.esbenshades.com/onlineshopping/index.asp

I've seen it at wallyworld and Home Depot. Don't know what there is in Lakeview, OR. You could also try the oriental food section of the grocery store. Look for Fish Sauce . . .
Neither of those stores carry it here--regional stuff is strange!
I bought some fish emulsion for my indoor plants. But, being blonde/gray, I was too gung hoo and didn't give it alot of thought into using it. I have the perma trays and wick water. So, I added the recommended amount per gallon and filled my three trays with it. EEEEWWW the smell. I , being real blonde/gray, thought, well other people use it indoors, so the smell will probably dissipate quickly. WRONG When I came home from work the next day, the house was hardly livable for the smell. Hubby and I had to move all the plants, and scrub out the trays. The odor lingered for days since it was the dead of winter , and I counldn't air out the house.
Now, I'm afraid to use it at all. I will ask, you all that know, What strength can be used indoors without the smell getting me in hot water again?
Needing to know.LOL Lurker Lou
Oh, Lou, I feel your pain! Just after we moved into the apartment last month, I did the same thing . . . it was AWFUL! What made it even worse . . . the plant shelves were next to my side of the bed!!!! ^_^
They are rooting in about 2" of my mix. This is the only one of the new babies that is really light.
Lakeview has about 2500 people, 1 Safeway [no special sections, not even a deli], 1 locally owned grocery, 1 liquor store. 3 gas stations, commercial station, and oil company all owned by the same person who doesn't even live here. [but he sure wants his money right now!] He even provides all of the county and city fuel. But it's a great place to live. We even occasionally have summer.
I use 1/4 teaspoon to 1 gal water-- but don't wick my babies so they don't stink;)
I feed any babies orchid food (diluted) until they are verrrry green and then start switching to other foods...........It comes from Better Grow and has a 20 first number for high nitrogen.
Also, I use Seaweed Extract with no odor from Growmore. You can either foliar feed or dip soil drench. It promotes growth and vigorous root systems.
Here is a pic of Targa gone bad (LOL). The blooms aren't blooming true but she is so much prettier and the blooms bigger than Kim by Dibley.
edited to say that I am laughing at myself...........I looked up Targa (a Fleischle) and this is the way she really looks...........I had her mixed up with Tar Jar
