202 eggs Wow!!!
It amazes me that these are not more frequently seen if each female lays this many eggs and has such a variety of host plants
Congrats Linda and Kim!!
That was fun Donna, lol!
Cool Kim. I haven't had a Queen yet this year. Just had lots of Monarch cats.
I'm delighted, especially to have found those little instars on both my Mexican milkweeds as well as the Purple milkweed (pictured). My first year with the Purple milkweed (I just looked it up and it's said to be native to Texas). I'm hoping these little guys will take it easy on the hostplants so I'll have seeds for the following years. lol. BTW; birds and Lizards garlore out there in the garden, so I brought one of my Mexican MW indoor along with those 'lil ones today to keep them from harm.
Here is one of those green gardener pals probing up high, I'm unsure if he was looking for cats. or hummingbirds? That said, my catalpa's leaves has chewing holes on them. I'd get these boogers of the plants if they're after my fish-bait caterpillars. lol.
You go Kim!
What kind of cats are on the Catalpa?
Nice little SBSM collection Donna! Now where is that big tree? Hope you find it soon.
Mean Ole Kim is fishing with Catalpa Sphinx Moth cats lol
I can remember as a kid in central LA going fishing with a jar of frozen caterpillars. By the time we got the boat in the water and ready to bait our lines they were wiggling again.
I read up on the catalpa sphinx moths and its hostplant. Last year, I found a moth and was identified as the catalpa sphinx. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, lol. Mean 'ole me going fishing. Nah, I don't think I'd had that patient to fish. But the thought entertains the lay back gardener, like myself. lol. BTW, I haven't found one caterpillar on the tree yet. It's still young and hasn't sent out flowers.
I don't know if I could do that now that I have gotten into raising cats. I was amazed as a 8 year old kid though; to see them come back and start moving.
we used them for bream fishing when I was a kid
Now we're talking! MJ that G.F. is gorgeous on the passy.
Saw a Monarch here sunday...YAY!!!!
Got 4 pretty good sized Monarch cats munching on the milweed. Started out w/ 10 so I guess it's time get the new cage built. My D's SO is building me one where you can put a potted plant in the bottom, and just take it out and replace w/ a new one when they eat it down. I've got about 10 milkweeds in pots besides what's in the ground. Will be much better than the plastic shoebox contraption I had to make up in a hurry last winter with the "last" migraters" Don't know where the other 6 went but they weren't all that big yet so guess something got them.
I've got a native passi in a shadier area for the Zebra Longwings, but haven't seen any yet.
I love photographing the BF's so I'm anxious to get all this planting done so I can "play"!
boy those passion flowers are really pretty. congrats nanny. I haven't seen a single butterfly yet. I heard from my Mom (40 miles southeast) and she just saw a tiger swallowtail.
I'm eagerly awaiting my BSTs emerging.
Nothing happening here this week except rain! The flowers are waiting along with me.
I've a lone queen caterpillar on my mw's seedling outdoor. I was delighted to see that it's well hidden from the open field. I rescued 5 others and brought another seedling indoor yesterday. Gotta run to the nursery and get more MW for these hungry mouths. lol. I've no time to germinate more seedlings quick enough for 'em.
I hear ya mj! Sounds like you're off to a good start. :-)
:-) on the Monarch nanny!
Hang in Sheila, maybe all the rain will give us a good season here.
Mrs Ed, I sure wish the Tiger STs would pick up some steam. I have hardly seen any for over a year. :-
Speaking of Black STs.. The one I posted in the top of this thread layed the eggs of these cats. There's 6 in all, and we have a fatty in the bunch, almost ready to pupate.
Had several Red Admirals, (V. alata) twirling and spinning around in the garden yesterday...
Not PL, good grief!
Had to correct this, lol. I am not myself lately. Been on some strong meds for an allergie attack last week. Thank God the last dose is tomorrow, whew! You guys must have thought I'd lost it,... :-)

If the only time you lose it is when on strong meds, you're doing well! I lose it all the time. A chronic condition not necessarily related to anything except maybe age. I found this TPS on a Velvetleaf Mallow near the creek. I believe it's about to pupate...seems to me I remember them changing to that color just before pupating. I felt mean opening the leaf it had carefully sealed closed...it was not a happy camper about that! Funny thing was that a spider had taken up residence on the next leaf. So I brought it in....the cat, not the spider!
The fatty is tempting fate by being up on those weak branches. LOL! Nice RA shot and bait station.
Linda...skipper but which one TP?
Thx Sheila, that log thing has a lot of nooks and crannies for the brew.
and Linda.. for the comforting. You seem very together from my angle, lol.
Nice Skippercat... Silking himself in, good sign of pupation. My Silver-spotted Skips silk themselves in to hide even in early instars. Sometimes 2 to a nest (buddy system). I have to go by size, but I agree yours looks ready.
Way to spot that lurking spider, and saving Skipper..:-)
It's the Texas Powdered Skipper...lucky to have them! They do either fold over a leaf or sometimes hide between two leaves if they are big enough and keep it closed by "stitching" it a bit...but this one had completely sealed up a leaf. The other cats are greenish.
I may have seen a female PVS today...nectaring on my Prairie Phlox, but ran off when I got closer.
