DAILY PICS VOL 207

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Quoting:
Resin, The reason why I thought it was mom and youngster was because I see it constantly chasing dad around begging for food which he does feed her

Possible, but I'd think it's a bit early in the year yet for House Finches to be fledged - finches are generally fairly late nesters. I'd say more likely the female testing out the male, to see if he can be relied on to act in the right way when given a dose of begging

Quoting:
Royal Tern (?)

Yep!

How about a Waxwing pic. Enjoy them while they are here.

Congrats on your Oriole, Dell. I have feed out also, but haven't seen anything on it. I changed the jelly this morning and some small bird had picked around a bit in it. Don't have any Wrens either and I have a couple of boxes up in the back.

Enjoy seeing the birds from different sections of the country that I don't get to see on a regular basis. Thanks to all for sharing.

Great pics everyone!!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

reddirtretiree, great pic of your Waxwing. They visit me about mid-January and are only here 1 or 2 days to gorge themselves on shriveled up cherries in our Japanese Cherry tree. Then they're gone for another year.

Here's one of two Turkey Hens I saw today. It's certainly not a great shot but was afraid if I got closer, I'd scare her off and she'd run into the woods like the first one did.

Yesterday morning a flock of between 30 and 40 of Carnaby's Black Cockatoos turned up. They were in the trees and took turns on the birdbath. This one landed in a young Queensland bottle tree and without hesitation bit off a branch. There were another couple in the firewheel tree and in two minutes achieved what an enthusiastic gardener could do with a pair of secateurs in a couple of hours.

Despite their destructive tendencies, they are so welcome. Big, beautiful birds. This is the first time in the years we've lived here that they've visited the birdbath, although are sometimes seen in the trees.

To get these shots I had to take them from inside the house, otherwise they wouldn't have fitted in the viewfinder.

I've cropped this heavily to show this one in the firewheel tree. The ground below looked like red-hot coals after it had finished.

They moved on to the plane tree in our over the road neighbours backyard. An alternative name for them is the White-tailed Black Cockatoo.

Quoting:
I always have trouble with the Royal and the Caspian

Caspian has a shorter, crew-cut crest, not shaggy like Royal's, and a larger (mainly thicker) red bill (not orange)

Quoting:
There was 2 large immature gulls This was the larger one.

American Herring Gull. If the other was smaller, likely Ring-billed.

Impressive Cockatoos!

Thanks Resin.

I went up to the lookout hoping to see Ospreys in flight (heard them in the trees below me but haven't seen them for two days). This is a tiny bird, a Brown Honeyeater in some bougainvillea.

Edited for typo

I still have a few Buntings, or else some new ones have stopped over for refreshments on their way North. Today on the way home a Vulture landed ahead of me and was trying to pick up something, so I stopped the car. He eventually was able to pick up the object (dead squirrel) and wobbily carried it off. I know squirrels are not terribly light, so he did a pretty good job staying in the air. THAT IS JUST GORGEOUS, MARGARET.

great shots today everyone!!!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

lovely series margaret!

I thought I'd share this with you all. This is a pile of grass and roots that I pulled out of our truck today. Where in the truck? It was in the area that houses the wipers. Turns out a pair of house sparrows was setting up house in there. I yanked as much as I could out and then stuffed the holes with chicken wire.

Wonderful pictures everyone. Mrs_Ed. Those finches are something else! It gets to the point we're reluctant to leave our garage door up during the day because we're afraid those 'lil ones will go inside and build nest and be trapped inside. What a pain, they get to be sometimes.

Oh, I was so excited today when dellrose helped identify this little guy for me. Hubby spotted it first. I didn't have my glasses on then, so I just saw a profile of it at first. Then the pretty boy decided to return to give the suet feeder a second try, and i got many pics. I was just trilled:

Hi Fruit, I like those Turkey Hens.

Margaret, Gorgeous shots of the Cockatoos and Honeyeater!

LOL Mrs Ed; they certainly are determined!

Congratulations Lily! Such a great new bird to get!

Here's a few shots of the White-Breasted Nuthatch who has discovered my feeding grounds. He/she has returned as this is my 2nd day seeing it. He or she has no problem getting close either. They are little characters.

I purchased a new lens and have a setup in my yard and been getting lots of visitors and once they discover the feeding hole, they seem to always return. I've been able to get really close shots as they get accustomed to me - but some still don't let me get close no matter what though. Even the Cardinals are not as skittish when at natural feeder set up.

I've been getting very lucky lately and I hope the trend continues.

Here's some shots of the Dark-eye Juncos, which have moved on except maybe 1 or 2. I used to see lots of them during the winter months. I wonder where they've gone.

Thanks Onewish1.

I love those 'lil nutchatches metho. I haven't seen a junco here in person. Nice shots! Oh Pelle, thanks for sharing my happiness on capturing the Rose-breast GB, that was a real treat.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Congrats Lily. You should have seen my excitement last year when they showed up for a week at my feeders. I gasped so loud that DH thought I was having a heart attack. Look for the females too, they are brown with a distinct eyebrow.

Nice work Al.
