We hit 91* here yesterday. It may have even been hotter than that, but either way, it was still a surprise.
Some if my rose blooms look like they've been torched :(
How warm was it where you are?
Too Hot for April !
We hit 98 here. Had to shut the back door, because the air coming in was like being hit by a blow torch. This morning we have some cool breezes and I have everything open. Forecast says 95 - a bit cooler tomorrow.
Tell me about it! It usually takes me a day or two to unload the car and trailer from Market sale on Sunday and I can't leave the plants in there now, too da** hot! I'm unloding this a.m. and I know it's too hot 'cause this is the first time that I've been perspiring, glistening---SWEATING so far this year...soaked. I suppose I'll be watering all day. We wanted to go to Julian for birdseed today, but we'll wait til Wednesday and hope it's back into the 70's. Mike, it just isn't fair that you live right on the water and it gets so hot and so cold there...hard to believe.
It was 94 here yesterday (10 degrees hotter than Sat, 20 hotter than Fri, and 30 hotter than Wed!) Of course I had a bunch of people here for a BBQ. We all BBQ'd, and without charcoal or gas.....I think it's going to be hotter today.
Usually we hit 100+ by the first week in May, then it coola off dramatically in June, and zooms back up to 105 the first part of July.
It's supposed to hit 97 here today...I am definitely not ready for this! And then I think in a couple days it's going to be down in the 60's...can't we just have something nice in between? LOL
I always dislike our 'May gray' - 'June gloom' weather, but at this rate I will welcome it!
Sherry, having now been to Mike's glorious garden (hereafter known as MGG), I agree. He was telling us how cold it gets, but we sure had great weather Saturday before the heat wave!
supposed to be 97 here as well. Definitely going to jump in the pool - we got one of those metal framed pools a couple of weeks ago at Costco - it's a horrendous eyesore at 18' around ! but the kids love it, so we'll keep if for a few years anyway.
The girls are bringing friends home to swim, got the otter pops in the freezer !
I expect these temps in July, not April. Last year this time we had tornadoes and hail storms. In the upper 90's today. My solar heated pool was 80 degrees this morning.
My poor roses are getting fried. My water lily in the container in the raised planter bed is scorched and it bloomed for the first time ever today.
Rain we need rain. Must call on Father Clay Two Bears and ask him to perform another rain dance!

All my poor seedling in the GH are getting fried!!!!!!
The door and vents are open along with a fan blowing out the hot air and it's still 109 deg. in there. I watered them all well this morning and about 30 min. ago I went out to check them and over half of them are dry again. I have them all soaking in a nice big pan right now.
I cannot believe how hot it is right now at 4:40pm. I was trying to clean out some drawers in the spare bedroom and even had a fan going in there....I finally couldn't take it any longer and sat at the puter for awhile to cool down.
Looks like a nice light dinner is on the menu tonight.
I know!! ! - I planted corn, popcorn and a bunch of melons on Friday and I've been watering those darn seeds every couple of hours today. With the heat they should sprout quickly, but I like the clouds to do the work for me : )
I bottom water most everything in my green house. Most of it is heat tolerant, but I'll be watering again tonight. Thank gosh most of it is on drip. More worried about the things I just transplanted out in the garden that isn't on drip yet. Hang in there, and I hope the heat damage is minimal.
WIB!

Fortunately I got everything out of my greenhouse a couple weeks ago...I temporarily regretted it at the time because we had a couple nights that went down to 35 right after I took everything out, but now I'm very glad I did it, it's a small greenhouse and my only ventilation is opening the doors, so things would be fried for sure if they were still in there.
My Fatsia japonica is under a plum tree, and it got fried yesterday within an hour, as the plum is not yet in full leaf! Normally, that Fatsia is in dappled shade during the warm season! I had to go hang a garbage bag from a ladder to shade it. Believe it or not, my Gardenia also wilted, despite damp soil, but sprang back once I watered it heavily.
SingingWolf - YES! Another rain dance would be most helpful! I'll do one in my back yard as well!
I tripped and fell on my rainstick or I'd accompany your dance. Broke the stick. Rats!
I'll give Father Clay Two Bears a call and see if he is up to it. Worked up in Big Bear last time he did it.

I am personally offended by this wretched weather and once again already have started whining about wanting to move.......I can tell you that people around me get really tired of listening to this in about two weeks time of hot weather. It has to get cool again for our May and June, still so many things to plant, cuttings to take, seeds to sow...I feel so cheated, you can just stand there and watch almost anything out in the sun die before your eyes. Went and ordered more shadecloth today. I'm simply grumpy as he** and going to go have margaritas and read...rise very early tomorrow a.m. and start watering for the third day in a row.
WAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! It's TOOOO HOTTTT! My chard is bolting, and my spinach & lettuce are wilting after they just got to the point where they might be picking size in another week. It was officially 99 here today.
COME ON MARINE LAYER!!!!
"Bolting Chard"...sounds like an 80's rock band !
No marine layer here, either.
This too, shall pass...(won't it ? )
Yeah, but it always comes back...just wants to let us know that summer is on the way and this is what it will be like.....
I'll have to suggest that name to my son, who's a musician in his spare time....
This morning, it's a LOVELY 63 degrees with light clouds. My poor baby petunias need some TLC. Snails and slugs were out in force, after I only Sluggo'd a week ago---so the koi had a nice breakfast!
imapigeon, no escape from this heat at the coast or the city either, they are just as hot! SF hit 93°, Santa Cruz 96° but poor you in Gilroy! Looking forward the that 30° cool down forecast for the weekend.
gypsy - hope the margarita helped !
I've been out to water this morning, and will be going out again soon, tomorrow is down to 80, that will be lovely !
LOL...margaritas always help...they help everything .....
Back up to 99 here today....fortunately DH put the shade sails up over the side of the house last night, and they help TREMENDOUSLY to keep it cooler inside!
Relief is on the way thank goodness.
It's here! We've got a nice breeze going. :-)
send it north, PLEASE ! lol
Yeah---FARTHER north! It's still 85 here tonite and no breeze atoll.
Nothing here yet either--my outdoor thermometer was reading 85 a few minutes ago--it was cooler last night at this time so I don't think our heat is going away yet.
Starting to cool down here too. I have shade cloth along the west side of the house and it does help. I and DH even went and bought a plastic wading pool for the dogs so they'll stay out of my pond. These last three days have been wretched. I like the heat, but in July not April! Don't know if you all remember but a few years ago we did have a lot of marine layer in August. So maybe it won't be so bad this year. Who can tell? Watering is an issue too. EMWD is going to ration water this year. Already talking to DH about our water allotment. Good thing that we have the wells to water the Christmas trees.
Hang in there, it'll be cooler tomorrow.
As sure as the sun will shine, this too shall pass.

I think Kathleen did her magic. We just started getting a really nice cool breeze and it feels great.
Thanks, Kathleen !
My pleasure. :-)
Aaaahhh, 98 degrees here in the Central Valley today, waaaaaa waaaaaaaAAAA! I came home to all my miniature roses wilted. I'll have to get up early enough tomorrow morning to water the little Star Jasmine straps I planted in my new landscape project in the front yard about a month ago, many of them in FULL SUN, eeeeeeeeek! I am NOT an early riser, folks.
It'll be cooler tomorrow, according to the "weatherman." A cooler 96 degrees. Yeah, thanks a bunch.
not much cooler for us either - 90's. Ima, I thought I heard Gilroy was 101 yesterday ??????
Wow, what a temperature change this morning. It's nice a cool and supposed to only be in the high 70's today. I'll take that everyday.
Me, too !
But, we'll get that humidity come July and August. Not looking forward to that, either.
Toots, it may have been 101 at City Hall, but I don't think it got that hot at our house. We've had a little weather station (DH is a sailor, and very "into" weather) with computer hookup & records---very helpful for gardening and when we did our solar array. Sometimes we're a little hotter than "official" temps, and sometimes a little cooler. We didn't hit triple-digits yesterday, but I'll bet we will today! Yesterday we had a little light cloud cover early in the morning---today, NADA! Gotta go water my containers before they all croak....
yeah, it was hazy yesterday - no blue sky . Today is clear again. That;s cool you have your own "weather station". I used to work in advertising (one of our clients was Dairy Queen) .. one of my jobs was to track the weather for all the little towns that had Dairy Queens in Oregon and Washington.... about 250 stores. A bit tedious !
Today seems a little cooler--I come home most days over lunch and when I stepped out of the A/C to get in my car it didn't feel as bad as it has the last couple days. And the forecast said it was only going to get into the high 80's vs high 90's yesterday. Tomorrow is supposed to be much cooler
