Male Hairy Woodpecker, checking every feeder in the yard.

Resin - what exactly is /are the "ticks" on the wings that you refer to? I am trying desparately to see the sex difference, but it sure must be subtle, as I am not getting it!!
Birdie
Great pics burn and Met!
Birdie, If you go to the thread Resin gave a link to it will show the difference. :-)
Oh, I did and it shows the diff kinds, but I did not seee any specific descriptons of the diff between the male & female of each. I looked slowly and thought I read carefully...perhaps I missed something. The difference must be quite subtle though, cuz i couldn't see it.
& still...what is the "tick" mentioned to watch for???
thanks ^_^
The 'tick' thing is an age difference in the wing pattern, between adults and juveniles - the sexes don't differ in this. What the sexes do differ is in the length of the yellow on the tail tip, and the intensity of the throat patch. Sorry if I didn't make it clear in the other thread!
Resin
getting closer to getting a good shot of the flicker.... just not yet

Nice shots onewish! You still have Junco's, mine all left.
I only saw that one ... and I was out for a long time yesterday... seems they are getting less and less every week
aaaaaaawwwwww
Yeah my Juncos are thinning out too - maybe 2-4 now. Fortunately I've been able to get many shots while they were here.
Red - since this is a bird-watching site, sic the Dixie Chicks on Toby Keith!
I'm sure they'll exact revenge!
Burn - a couple years ago, I had a mourning dove in the yard that was having
some kind of neurological problem. It's head would curl all the way back until
it was almost touching it's back, then it would fall over. It would get up but then
the same thing would happen over & over. Most of the birds were staying
away from it but some of the other doves were pecking at it (guess 'cuz they
knew something was wrong). I thought about just putting it under a bush in my
friend's yard (who doesn't have any dogs or cats), but then I figured it'd just
die a slow death. So I reluctantly did the dirty deed. Haven't seen anything
like that again, thank God. I wonder if they're prone to any certain disorders?
