Not A Good Place To Raise Children

Mullins, SC(Zone 8a)

LOL they are so cute! If they were yellow they'd look like big bird with those topknots.
D'ya know I never knew baby birds were born with their eyes closed until I saw these pics. Keep 'em coming and thank you so much for letting us in on this!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Ha! They look grumpy! :)

Mullins, SC(Zone 8a)

That's exactly how they look, isn't it? Must have been hard work, being born :)

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. they probably look grumpy because I was shining a flashlight in their face and had nothing for them to eat.

I counted 5 babies. There are 4 in this picture .. I'm worried about the 5th one .. I hope it's getting enough to eat! They seem to have doubled in size over the last two days.

Thanks

Maybe #5 is just tucked in tight there somewhere. :)
Really enjoying seeing their daily progress, X.

Well I count beaks every morning.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

A fine job! LOL, X Beak-counting. What a pleasurable chore to do in the garden. I love it.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Counted only 4 beaks again. They are on solid food now. Papa was scolding me with a grub in his mouth.

Looking more Wren-like every day!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Indeed! I'm thinking the one on the left is a male and the other two female.

I count 5 beaks! .. They are 1 week and 2 days old. They are suppose to leave the nest in 14 days.

Oh wow, I'm glad the 5th one is still there! I was afraid something had happened to it.

See how different they look now.....it's amazing.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Alright! All 5 still there. :)
They are so cute.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I was relieved to see 5 beaks this morning! Amazing how fast they are growing.

Sorry about being so late today .. it was very cold this morning and all I could see was little birdy bums and legs as they were all squashed as far into the nest as they could get. So I just went outside and took this one, and got the evil eye from one of them. Glad looks can't kill!

Wow! What a difference from just a day ago! I love that look he's giving you. :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Tehehehe, I don't think it's so much a 'mean' look, but rather. "Okay, have you got one of those goodies?" kinda inquisitive look. lol.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I think you're looking at the wrong one .. its THIS GUY. He has a very baleful look!

Definitely giving you the eye there, X! LOLOL!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

There are five almost full grown babies all stuffed into this pot. Some are definitely getting squished.

Because there are so many in such a small place only 2 or 3 are up front. And remember, there is a nest in there too! Amazing!

The change in these little ones each day is so incredible.

Here is one of the parents

I love following your thread. Nice pictures. I wished I could follow their development with mine. They're lovely. I saw one of the Carolina Wren came to my suet feeder once in a while. I guess these parents birds get exhausted feeding their youngs and have to resort back to some other nutrient supplement other than bugs.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks .. it's fun watching it too .. it really is amazing that it only takes 2 weeks from hatching to flying.

I couldn't agree more....a mere 2 weeks time! I've partially witnessed Phoebes leaving their nest last week. I'm still finding the young ones around the garden practicing independent-living, hunting ect. They're are real troopers!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Must be the palace guard! So fluffy he's hiding everyone else.

Ahhhh, looking more like Papa everyday! LOL.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

They'll be fledging any day now, right?
A friend of mine many years ago found one that had made the nest in a tolbox on their tractor. She told her then 3 year old son it was a "toolbox bird"
I too just love the song of a Carolina Wren. one of the happiest I've heard!!

here's a picture of mine in a hanging basket that fledged a couple weeks ago

I took this picture yesterday evening without using a light source .. that is why it is so grainy. Little did I know it was the last picture.

The last of the wren pictures. I really enjoyed taking them and watching their progress over these last 2 weeks.

A nice journey it was, thank you for sharing it with me and others. A humble start for the little birds, but they succeeded! Congratulation on your part as well, X.

Columbia, SC(Zone 7b)

Excellent story!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

(sniff) I have "empty nest" syndrome!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

LOL with you X. I was thinking along that line. lol. Cheers, time to celebrate your success. Miss them we will, but they're going to have a good life ahead.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm keeping an eye out for them .. I haven't heard mom or dad at all today .. usually you can hear parents calling to their kids.
