Nice ones burn!

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Northern Bobwhite. Ran across some banded birds at the upper end of one of the ponds. They were loafing in a thicket there. A guy north of me has some birds he keeps in a johnny house to use training bird dogs. That's basically a coop with a caged bird inside. The birds are raised in it and when mature allowed to roam free during the day and they come back in at night to the call of the caged bird.

Gorgeous Avocet!

Thanks for the new thread Burn...looks like spring is finally on the way in your area. You have such a nice variety of birds and now I am looking forward to your water feature and all the delightful Warblers you always attract. Our little Chippers have also returned and I just love them as well as the little Dees. I would be happy to send you some of my Grackles...they are here in numbers also!!

Red..you also have a wonderful selection of birds but you also have the surroundings to go with them. I have only seen a Bobwhite 3 times in the past few months but prior to that none at all for over 10 years. We used to hear them all the time but they are slowly disappearing. I love that shot of yours and the Avocet!

The sun in shining beautifully today after our freeze again last night.

Great shots Burn and Red!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Great start burn...hope spring has made it up there for you!

I think we need to go visit red....great birds!! Where I lived as a kid we would hear and see bobwhites occasionally. I can't even recall the last time I saw or even heard one now...

Norman, OK

I'm well acquainted with the plight of Bobwhites, dell. I've been active in upland conservation for a long time. Penance for shooting them for 50 years. :)

Thirty years ago, I used to bird hunt where I live now. I'm on the fringe of town, still lots of undeveloped land. I heard bobs calling last spring and my wife and I flushed a covey of wild birds last fall while on a walk. That one bob was getting his hormones worked up yesterday. Calling incessantly. That is how I found them. It's still early for them to be mating, but should be hearing some more soon.

The bobs are so different from the western quail who grow used to people. Bobs are just secretive by nature and even when they are around you aren't likely to see them.

Those are super nice, RDR can't wait to see your other ones. Nice surroundings you have for them.
Thanks girls, we finally are getting some warm sun. Gorgeous out, yesterday and today. All that snow that fell, is gone yippee. Only old snow left in the back of the yard and some in the front.

Darling little Redpoll

Red...they are doing things in Mo also to bring back the Bobwhites...I sure miss hearing their call in the early evening.

Burn..that is a darling...so cute!

Red, I've never seen that Avocet. It's beautiful.

Rose, your photos are so clear. I love that Goldfinch all bundled up and the Sparrow is a cutie. I haven't seen my Bluebirds for a few days, glad to see yours.

My Oak Titmouse looked cute here.

Burn, love the hawk shot and the redpoll.
Rose, your pics are amazing.
Reddirt, you posted birds that I've never seen. Very cool.

This pic should be on the awful thread, but it's kind of amazing that it's as good as it is. Look at all the plants in front of it! Then it had just taken a bath in the pond, so it was shaking and basically not standing still for a second. Plus, I only got one shot before it flew away. Oh, and I was looking through the window. I think it's a Yellow-breasted Chat.

This is another shot that's not great, but surprised me. This Downy did not want his picture taken. I'm looking over my fence that has the Dutchman's pipevine all over it at the half-dead tree in the neighbor's yard.

Elphaba, that must have been the very same bird that bathed on my Lily pond tub the other day. Man the 'lil does travel a long way to visit you. What do you think? LOL.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL! Probably! I've been obsessing over my roses in the front yard instead of looking for birds at the pond in the back. This month is the best bird watching around here, so I'd better refocus my obsessions! I should be looking for those migrators!

My gosh the sun is peeking out a bit so I may go for a walk here....

Blue Jay this Morning. It was so glad to find some peanuts out. Since it has been raining so much the last couple of days I have not put any out.

Elphaba, I like unusual birds as well. I had planned to go up to NW OK and shoot some Lesser Prairie Chickens while they are booming on the leks next week, but a date with a surgeon has changed that.

Here is a pic of Suzie napping.

Thumbnail by reddirtretiree

I love Suzie! Cute pics Nanny.

I just had half a dozen beautiful male gold finches in the crepe myrtle. They hadn't been around for a while, so I was worried about the seed in their feeder. I just had to walk out there to check. I scared them so badly that they flew north for the summer. Seriously, they flew north and disappeared into the distance!

Quoting:
...they flew north and disappeared into the distance
Guess what? They just now arrived here, on the northward bound journey. lol I haven't seen them but once the other day in a big flocks. Today, they briefly stopped by the feeder, and I'm so glad all the residential finches already had their share and were not around to intimidate these pretty ones. :-)

Oh, I also saw some more Waxwings today, the pix, however, qualifies to be on 'Aweful pic.' so I'll post there next.

Wonderful pics!

Suzie is adorable!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Duc...that Oak Titmouse is adorable.

Elp and LIly...pretty Goldfinch and he sure moved fast didn't he?!!

Elp..congrats on the Chat...I've never seen one.

Nice ones Nanny...how lucky you are to have a Hairy...I haven't seen one in ages.

Red...Suzie is so cute...is she a pet?

Here is my first pic this year of a Field Sparrow. They are such sweet little birds and sing very loud...LOL!

Thumbnail by dellrose
Norman, OK

Suzie is not a pet, she is a wild mallard that has taken up residence on one of the ponds. She lets me get closer than she used to.
