Spring Bulbs - What's Blooming? IV

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Steve! Oh yes, the Lilies are well on the way! Thankfully the recent nights in the upper 20s haven't bothered them a bit. I told them how far along yours are, so they're trying to catch up, LOL. I love seeing blooms and potential blooms side by side, very encouraging indeed!

David_Paul, I just looked through old threads to find that order, and I believe that Daff is 'Sundial'. These are kinda short, maybe 8" or so.

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

I got them from a coop on DG just last year, I think? Sorry I am really bad about writing stuff and keeping track of them.

I will definitly try hyacinths, I love them and didn't know they are critter proof. I love tulips, never thought of growing them in pots, I think I will do that. I have some pretty porch boxes Don made me last year and I could grow them in there.

You guys have such great ideas and suggestions, thanks, loves ya's all!!!

I had to put this pic on here, this is another one I got in the coop. I cut this 10 days ago and brought it in the house, I cannot even believe how beautiful it STILL is. I need about 100 more of these babies!

Do be careful handling hyacinth. Poison ivy doesn't bother me but hyacinths do. Just started last fall too. Year before I handled them with no discomfort. This time my hands turned red and itched....but it got worse... I touched my eyes and saw auras. Bright jagged rainbows at the edges of my vision and blurriness in the center. Pretty but very disconcerting.

I could read just enough to search for the phenonoma on the net (I hadn't yet connected it to the hyacinths..that happened the second time I did it). Turns out to be harmless. What I saw is exactly what those with Ophthalmic Migraine see right before an attack--cracked, fragmented rainbows and a kaleidoscope effect.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

David, I've had similar reactions to handling various bulbs the last couple of years. The first time I noticed it with Glads, although I'd handled them many times through the years. Then fall bulbs from Brent&Becky's, among which there were Hyacinths. I've wondered if it could be something the bulbs were treated with, since for me it only happens sometimes- most notably with 2 separate fall bulb orders from B&B. With me it has only happened with newly purchased bulbs.

Wonderful pics all! LOVE the turtle Susan and the callas soilsandup. Thanks for the reminder. I checked my callas in the cold room and they were up so repotted and out in the greenhouse now.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Susan, your first picture is probably 'Golden Dawn', one of the choices in that co-op. The doubles in that co-op were 'Replete' and 'Delanashaugh', not sure which you have there.

It went down to 27 the other night and the tulips didn't seem to notice at all. Thanks Leawood for the vote of confidence in the tulips withstanding the cold. I was worried!

Wish I could capture the color of this one accurately, the petals are actually more amber in color. It's Kedron from B&B.

This will seem like a flashback LOL to some of you. They got snowed on today but I think tomorrow....

Nice blue purple. No rabbits nibbling the tops off either.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Katie, lots of beautiful pics, and you have an awesome collection of Daffodils! Where do you get most of your Daffs? Mitsch Novelty Daffodils?

Stafford, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks! For the last few years, my favorite source is the Washington Daffodil Society...which may procure some from Mitsch, I'd think. I still buy some from B&B, but not as much for various reasons. I've about exhausted Old House Gardens...lol, but they were a good source, too.

I am sitting here going over and over the new offerings from WDS...so many choices, such limited space to put them in...lol! It is so fun to choose, though, and dream.

My weeping cherry made it through the snow and frosts of the last two weeks - yea!

The cherry blossoms sure look nice with springbulbs LG! DP Boris and Natasha the jackrabbits are very polite and don't nibble my bulbs. Probably because I put bloodmeal down.

leawood. Very nice property you have. Did you notice the dove? in your picture at the base of the tree?

Leawood, KS(Zone 5b)

Hey BeaHive! I hadn't noticed the dove, but it doesn't surprise me. I have several that hang around my birdfeeders, mostly eating the seeds other birds kick out on the ground. Unfortunately, they're kind of slow (and not too bright) so my cats keep the numbers down.

Bad kitties! I love doves. I had some nesting at my old house in CA that came back evey year! I did not have my camera then! What a shame as they were so cute!

It finally stopped raining here, so I got a few pics of the new things that have bloomed.

The tulips in the front island are getting a good start:

I made an affort to plant some tulips that were just as pretty before and after they bloomed..these are Tulipa praestans 'Unicum' and Greigii 'FIre of Love'

The Unicums even have little red buds nestled inside:

Bea, your garden must be spectacular! What wonderful flowers (and great photos!) Congratulations!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks ..everyone has beautiful flowers from all the post I have seen on this forum.

I have some bulbs out in back. I have had drainage issues for a few years so bulbs were not possible unless they were in pots.
Neighbor in back has finally put in a french drain to keep the water from his yard out of my yard...so bulbs were possible! What a battle
that was & $5K worth of drains on my property to keep up with his water! Yikes!

This was interesting to see today. The new design tulip keeps itself warm at night! LOL

Tulip or Peony??

Bea: I like that New Design very much and will try to incorporate some this fall. Are those peony tulips and are they fragrant? Some tulips have a delightful fragrance, lightly scented.
