We've really hit the big time now. Home Depot has signed on as a sponsor of DG this spring.
For those of you with ads turned on, you're probably seeing Home Depot's ads in quite a few places.
Moreover, they have a special page on our site here:
http://davesgarden.com/special/homedepot/
That page includes their weekly flyer each week, and a few other nice features. Click the images on the right-side of the page for articles.
It's nice to have such a big brand get behind DG in a major way. ^_^
Home Depot
Congratulations Dave!! As you say, your garden is going big time!!
Neat!
AWESOME!!!!
Major Congrats Dave!!!!
Don't forget us "little people".
:-)
Chris
Fantastic! And congratulations!
Dang. No freebie? I was hoping for a lawn tractor. But "sponsorship" means that they're putting money in DG's coffers to finance an ever-cooler site, right? I'm all for that too.
Guess they know a good site when they see one!
I wish we had a Home Depot within driving distance. It was quite a shock to discover the lack thereof once I moved here.
Wow, DG's definitely running with the big dogs. Congratulations!
My DH's truck goes to HD without human guidance!
Another well deserved rung of the ladder! Congratulations!
Wow, wait till I tell my DH about this. He is now a part time worker at HD.
Donna
This is exciting news! Congrats Dave and all! LOL summerkid, I'm with you. A new grill would be nice.
Congrats Dave!!!! I just want PLANTS!!!
Congratulations!!!!
LOL dear Wren ^_^
I spend a lot of money at HD!!!
is home depot going to give us members a discount or something
and I would be nice if we could print out a members card with out names on it to use for that discount that home depot should be giving all of us since we do keep them in business hahahahahah
congrats you deserve it all since you have given us so much pleasure with this site
mona
yeah...DG'ers discount in the Garden Center maybe???
That's not a bad idea. We're not doing anything like that this time, but I'll certainly pass along the suggestion to our team who handles these kinds of things!
WHOO HOO Thanks everso Dave for considering this! HD is just up the road from me ^_^
Me too!! And a Big Thanks for this wonderful web site-which I spend a LOT of time on.
I am very concerned and apprehensive to hear Dave's has accepted Home Depot as a sponsor for a few reasons.
First, They are not a plant nursery and their plant material is very poorly chosen and cared for. If they were listed in Watchdog they would have an extremely poor rating. Many threads include information about DG members who have worked for HD and really cared about their job in the plant area only to have them moved to other areas and replaced by people who don't care or don't know anything.
Second, they are clearly not a green company since they are willing to sell highly invasive plants without regard to the environment. I volunteer in a local reforestation project and they are selling many of the same plants we spend hour upon hour removing because they have escaped cultivation.
They are cheap and Ok for non invasive annuals like pansies but because they are so poorly cared for you have to almost be there when new merchandise is unloaded because a few days later what didn't sell is dying.
everone has a HD up the road hahahhaha they are everywhere in world are they not
I do not think of HD as a primary plant source but I do think of it often for a lot of other garden and yard items. To me a garden is more than the plants.
I am lucky the one near me take care of their plants.
I get all kinds of stuff from there garden center like stones, statues, bird seeds, feeders, and materials to build stuff for the garden and for my deck area, Home Depot has its uses, but I prefer to grow my own plants or go to garden centers to look for rare perennials
I've actually gotten some very nice plants from HD, and some wonderful pots. I go there for seed starting supplies, tools and things like tomato towers and the fold up tomato 'boxes' (that, unfolded, make great trellises for peas, beans and Clematis). I think it's safe to say that there are plenty of reasons that HD makes a credible sponsor for DG - and perhaps we as a community can encourage them to make a better effort in their plant choices and care.
Kathleen, having a Pollyana moment
Kathleen, I think I do agree you are having a Pollyanna moment on this one.
The local native plant society people have tried to work with another big box store and they promised to try to sell more native plants. Sounds great right? At the same meeting another member complained that the store near them were selling small native plants at a ridiculously low price that could only mean they are wild collected. Yikes! (I am using this as an example of what has happened when trying to work with a big box store- clearly I am not referring to HD here- and how we were not on the same page in all aspects).
The intention might be there but if you try to buy plants like other manufactured products without evaluating sources and quality you are only asking for trouble.
It's like buying a dog from a pet store that came from a puppy mill. Everyone loses except the puppy mill and the pet store that make a profit.
The big box stores cut local nursery sales and reduce the chances of getting quality plants to the public.
They really don't have the expertise to be in the garden nursery business even if they do a creditable job in the home improvement business.
Although DG does have home improvement and building forums this is primarily a garden site that we trust
and you really can't say you trust or respect HD as a Garden Center.
I stand by the fact that they would be rated very poorly on Watchdog since again and again on many forums I see people saying that the plants are in such poor shape they feel pity for them and they buy the left overs at cut prices to try and save them. They feel compassion for them as living plants not just products.

I go to home depot on a regular basis mine is not bad they do try to water and take good care of the plants, when it get really busy and the trucks are coming everyday it is hard for them to keep up, I usually go during the week when the full timers are working since they are the ones that have the answers I may have, do remember evening and weekends are mostly teenagers and they really dont know much about the plants but they need to work to, I usually make the rounds in the spring to all the garden centers and then again at the end of the season for the deals
last year I found that most garden centers ran out of plants by mid may so for my area it really doesnt affect the small guy since they cant seem to grow enough for the demand which makes everyone happy except the gardener since not many deals to be had hahahhahahaha
As long as I have a choice (and fortunately, we do have small, independent nurseries in our general area), I will not purchase landscape/garden plants from any 'Big Box' store.
I always buy from the locals first right down to my fruits and produce but I will always check out the big box also just to see what they have
Yes some times they have things that the others do not carry. We have some good nurseries but most carry the same old things. I have to drive almost 200 miles to get really good plants.
I am very lucky with home depot, canadian tire, and rona close and also 4 large private garden centers all within a half hours drive and if I decide to do all of them I can do it in one morning, now I did find out that there is a few large ones a bit further I plan on checking them out in the next couple of weeks
I you are every down in Florida go to Tallahassee Nursery it if great, plus there is other good nurseries near by.
Personally, I love Home Depot. They have a lot of good stuff that all gardeners need. Tools, soil, etc.
Plus, they employ a lot of my neighbors. People I know and trust. Just because they have a BIG NAME does not mean they do not impact our local economy positively. The guys who work there have all kinds of great advice for the garden. :)
I am one of those gardeners that can't always afford the local nursery that sells a perennial for 6.99, but I can get one for 3.99 at Home Depot.. I'm not saying I buy exclusively from them, but they are a store I frequent.
I for one, welcome the sponsorship of Home Depot. Good job, Dave,
I for one HAD always bought from the box stores, that is until I learned right here on daves of the hazardous Hosta that was being sold and kept alive but us supporting it.. a few other things came to light on my life...
Like the fact that I had to replace hand tools 2x a season
Mt clippers would not keep an edge, even with constant sharpening
My gloves would have holes in them within hours of first using them..
The sprinkler/water head would leak and shoot water everywhere within a month of purchasing.
I always claimed I could not afford to shop at the small shops.. those little ones where the people were so nice and the price for a hand shovel was $16.00 and and the box store is only $6. and then I found an interesting tool I had never seen before and spent the xtra bucks.. and learned the quality.. next I bought a shovel.. that about killed me.. that much money... that was 9 years ago.. it was the last hand shovel I have bought... It doesn't bend.. break.. or even twist, it just moves soil!
I have learned I won't shop at the 2nd quality box store.. and while it did start with the health of the plants it turn to the quality of the tools. The "bargin" is just not worth it, even with a coupon.
Thats my watchdog comment. Sorry to hear Daves has invited them.
Does this mean as an advertiser the powers that be now share our purchase power information with them?
I wonder when we will see at the local home depot: "as heard on Daves"
Sounds Great Dave and Congratulations! Home Depot is good! I would probably go into Plant Atrophy if they weren't around here.
However, I'm sad to say that I submitted my little business on your watchdog ad's for an advertising quote and never even got a reply!
Kat
