WESTERN HUMMINGBIRDS - VOL 2

Renton, WA

The first page of Western Hummingbirds was interesting and fun,
knowledgeable with great photographs from all corners of the west,
thankyou all.
We came from here:

I'll humbly start* page two with-
The Anna male who's on the look-out:

Great job Dirt!

Beautiful shot of the Anna Hummer!

Thanks for the new room.

You're welcome Pelle and Linda Kay.

Here's a cutie Anna female--
this one has her own personality-
most hummers sip fast and furious,
this one composed and like an English
tea setting quietly sips and stops slowly
taking her time. Doesn't mind getting too
close to, hope it stays for years to come.

Aww she is sweet!

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Love how you captured the light glimmering on her feathers. I just sat and watched a hummer at my feeder. I don't know the names as yet, part of my reason for checking in here--make myself learn them after all these years of watching! I call the little one this morning "tuxedo" LOL! Will try and get a photo later.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Great pictures dirt. That female looks so innocent.

Our first male and female Calliope hummingbirds arrived and the female is so small, she can barely reach the sugar water. Haven't gotten a photo of the female yet, but here's the male.

Cute one adel!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Great Rufous adel! Have you counted how many you've got?

Klamath River, CA

duc..............It doesn't appear to be very many. I have three feeders out and so far the best count I can get is three.

Renton, WA

Duc- your Calliope hummingbird is awesomel. Great shot. Going to learn more about them,
and a very shy Rufous female showed up over the weekend.
All I can get is a peek a boo around the feeder pic, but hopefully later I can have better shots of her.
Haven't seen the male-but neighbors saw him on theirs.
Nice shot adelbercat of the male Rufous
and thanks pelle for your support.

This male Anna was chattering and trying to get the attention
of a female at one of the feeders. I happened to be in between
and watched the fella do loops trying to impress her as she sat
motionless but did look up after the 2nd or 3rd time. Couldn't
see him on the bottom but heard the sound he created.
Hey if the fella who did that could read, I was impressed.

another look at him

and the female which was his fancy

and her watching him looping-

this anna female (I think) is new to my area, kept buzzing the
regular bird feeders (I have large red plates) and finally
came over for some refreshments and drank her heart out.
pic is little out of focus, didn't expect to get a shot.

and this one was from yesterday,
another anna female (in the rain)

Here is a couple of pics from 2007 --
the first is a rufous female (that I was mistaken about)
Aug 21 2007
why I show will be the following picture, to see if that hummer is
a young anna or rufous or whom ever.

then this is an immature (I am guessing) hummer
on Aug 26, 2007
could this be an anna or rufous?
(the previous rufous was around all the time that year)

Do the white tips on the tail mean it's a rufous?

Renton, WA

Good eye KaperC, All I saw was a white body and didn't really notice
the tail. I am not a great detective.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Great shots Dirt!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Great photos dirt. I especially liked that last one with the strange coloring. I have one that's come for the past two years which never turned any real color but tan. I think yours may be a similar one. Possibly a hybrid?

Here's my light one. I took this photo last year, but haven't seen it yet this year.

I had fun photographing this tough little Rufous male. Here he's got a black gorget (throat).

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

A slight movement of the head and the gorget color changes.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Another slight movement in the head and I have still another color. Unfortunately, the sun wasn't bright enough for me to get the full brilliant red, but this one is close.

Nice shots Duc! We've really been enjoying the hummers this year. Named our little aggressive Rufous 'Sugar Ray' since he's bent on never letting another hummer near any one of the 3 feeders. But when there are 8 other birds at a time he just can keep up his full court press.
This is the first year that I've seen the Rufous stick around, they generally just pass through.

keep those photos coming!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I read somewhere that there are albino hummers - could that be the light colored one?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

That one is leucistic ("washed-out" colours), rather than albino (white) or partial albino (mixed white and normal)

Resin

Thanks, Resin!

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

I love seeing all the photos. This is a Broadtail I think? I was loving seeing how his throat looked maroon, almost black and then I would catch glimpses of this lovely red.

Thumbnail by cactuspatch

Sure looks like one. Is the tail rounded?

Nice pic!

Renton, WA

cactuspatch-- pretty hummer.
duc-- wow. modeling agency photography. All that guy needs is
a couple of headshots and a resume and you can become his
agent. In fact he probably doesn't need to loop, just show your
photos.

Betcha yours cant do this:
MY anna female teaches-- yes that's a fact-
this one this afternoon teaches.....

Thumbnail by dirt_in_ozone7b
Renton, WA

as soon a she started to sip and pose
pretty, a chestnut back chckadee landed
on the feeder and wanted whatever she
had--
unfortunately it didn't like it.--
and took off.
bet the stuff was too sweet.
(was able to get only this bad shot to prove the higher standard teaching ability)
(or that was one dumb chickadee)

Thumbnail by dirt_in_ozone7b

That's cool dirt!

Renton, WA

Can you spot the female Anna in this photo?
She was clicking or ticking.
I read where that might be an indication of a nest nearby.
Anyone else know for sure. Don't want to disturb it--
rather not see it and have a nestful than accidently shake
or expose it.

(look at the bottom center)
Come to think of it, Pelle, you could open up a birdie modeling agency too.
