Possible Cold Snap Heading to North Texas

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Yep, did what I could. Made room in our shed & brought in quite a few plants in pots (like a dozen or more). Covered the maters & peppers with pots & then a landscape timber to hold them. Then the rest of the tenders with a sheet. covered what else I could with sheets and can't wait to see how they fair tomorrow when I get home.

It was weird... got home at 5:30 and was almost hot doing all that. so bizarre.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is 34 at my house this morning, so I guess the plants left outside are o.k.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I think we dodged that bullet too. It dipped no lower than 35 here.. Yea! Perhaps the last one???

Oakwood (Butler,TX), TX(Zone 8b)

31 here in Butler at 6:00 .... 32 at 7:00 didn't last long but im glad I got everything covered ...Hope it was enough,
Id hate to have to start all over :(

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

Currently 30.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

28 here currently :(

Kendalia, TX

32!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We're sitting at 33º here, but the sun is peeking over the horizon, so warmer temps are coming!!

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

The official Austin low was 39, but I'm in a more rural, outlying area. When I checked at about 6:00, the temperature at 6 feet was 34. I didn't think to put the thermometer on the ground last night. We had a heavy frost...enough that the freshly tilled dirt in my garden was frosted. The tomatoes were covered with cardboard boxes, so hopefully they survived okay.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

36 here right now....10 degrees warmer than at 6 a.m., so it looks like we're out of the woods now...did get everything covered and it all looks good.....by noon should be around 50-55...yesterday's high.

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

37º everything was covered just in case...gonna set out peppers this week and on Good Friday will plant beans & some other stuff.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

It was 27* here at 7:00 am everything was covered but because it is still only 30* I'm going to wait before I take all the buckets off. I have sold most of my seedlings so I sure hope that I didn't lose any of my tomato plants I don't have anything to replace them! Wouldn't that be ironic?

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

30F at my house at 7am. Everything that was covered was fine, but a couple things I didn't cover got nipped. Oh well, such is life. I just don't have the time or patience to cover them all.

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

Hit 29 this morn. Had brought plants in for the night. Can someone tell me how to get a very large Toad to come out from behind the washer? He jumped out of a fern pot as I was taking them out this morning. Guess he stayed nice and warm last night. Bettter a Toad than a mouse!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I got up at 6:00 and the thermometer read 35.8º, but I looked up the history of the two nearest airports. The lows were at 7:25AM. One read 37 and the other 34. I'm about halfway in between. So my plants escaped this time.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Weedlady, leave the door open and cracked for awhile, he'll leave, he likes it better outside too...that's where his food is.

Kendalia, TX

Frost in Kendalia. My covered stuff was OK, though.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

All my plants are OK too. Now I'm glad I went to all the trouble to cover them up and bring them in. Is this the last freeze? Rubber feed tubs make good plant covers.

I spoke too soon! The tomatoes were okay, but they were covered. The potatoes have lost about 25% of their foliage and about 1/2 the first corn patch was killed to the ground.

I posted a zoom of this image over on the vegetable forum for opinions, but I'm hoping that it wasn't killed. I'm not a botanist, but I think that the whitish line across the stem is the growth point. I've found several references that say the corn's overall yeild won't be affected as long as the growth point wasn't killed. I guess it will set the harvest back a week or two.

got home yesterday & uncovered everything--all looks good. even found an eggplant that i'd just put in the ground monday evening--had forgotten about it so it didn't get covered. was amazed it looks fine!

so thankful i had enough time to prepare and haven't lost much of anything lately. just had a few plants badly beaten by the hail we had.

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Well at 4:51 today it was 100º (NOAA) here. 58 hours ago it was officially 36º (NOAA) here, a 64º spread. Plants don't know which way to grow.

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL Heck I dont know which way to grow either.Cant read the temp as the wind,West TX sand, and the smoke from all the fires around have plum blinded me. Did get Mr Toad out of the house without my 5 dogs fighting over who was gonna kill it ,thank you Eyes!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Here in Dallas County we are in the middle of a West Texas Dust Storm, yuk.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Wasn't a dust storm here Christi....it was the smoke from the fires to our west and north. Herman has to stop working outside and go in because of his breathing problems he has. I wasn't far behind, I kept coughing. Hope they get them all under control tonight while the wind is mild.

As for the damage the near freezing temps caused...I feel it did get to freezing at my house because my vitex tree tips are crispy today and some cannas are brown, as are the tips of turks cap. No real problems that won't bounce back. I hauled the potted items in and then brought most back out today.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I was 99.5 at my house today; however, it did not feel that hot with the low humidity. The official high was 99 which equaled the the record high for April 9th set in 1963. Laredo was 104! Whew!! Now we have to worry about severe thunderstorms with possible hail and damaging winds on Easter. We have a problem with the electricity going out frequently during thunderstorms. I sure hope this doesn't happen 'cuz I'm having lots of people over for Easter. No way to cook or heat the food and no air conditioning could make it a bit unpleasant. I will be optimistic 'cuz we usually don't receive rain at my house when it is pouring all around me. :o)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Holy cow, htop! I thought our high 80s temp for today was bad. So glad I don't live down in the valley!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Still smokey out there this morning and you could still smell the fires. I took my DD to school and felt my chest tighten up. I don't think I will be doing any work in the yard today.

When I was out in the yard yesterday I did notice some crispy tips on the new growth of some plants too. Mexican Marigold and some others that usually don't pop up until after the last freeze. It's damage that won't be permanent though.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Saw the terrible news this morning about all of the wildfires north west of Ft. Worth. And a couple killed and their son is in the burn unit at Parkland. I coughed all night thinking it was the dust and just found out that it was fire. So many homes destroyed last night.

One of our favorite places, Mena, AR was almost wiped off the map with a tornado, killed 3 people. In 1994 we went through a tornado here and it is much, much worse than it appears in a picture.

I'm sure those of you that live in Ft. Worth will have the air fouled for sometime.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, I heard Arkansas was hit with a Tornado, but I did not know it was Mena. We like to camp in the area and have been through Mena a few times. Off to read more...
