Dutch Bantam hatch

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I have 18 Dutch bantams about to hatch. I just moved them to the hatching incubator. I have 18 out of 24 mailed eggs that, from candling, appear to have development, so I'm pretty excited about this hatch. Any tips on DB hatching? I note that one is pipped already and day 21 is Saturday, so we are on day 19 right now. Kind of surprised me!

Anyone want to guess on roos and hens? 18 eggs...could be 9 and 9....could be something else!?

They often hatch on day 19... you can safely put them in the hatcher on day 16

Can't wait for pics.. and my favorite.. guessing the gender

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Whole lotta pipping going on, Claire? Or just the one still?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Just the one right now. Must be an early bloomer!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

a roo no doubt.. LOL

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

10 roos and 7 pullets and one who'll lead you on... =0)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Nice guess Jay! If you're right, I'll send you a free roo! LOL!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Dinner! Thanks!
I'll Dmail the libation rendition...
LOL

I hatched 12 from Theresa--that's right 10 roos and 2 pullets. ZZ's got the pullets and two of the roos. We, um, ignorantly sold the red pyle ones. We are mere babes in the woods.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It won't be long Catscan, we will have eggs!! Pearl.. the lil white/splash is goin in and out of the nesting box.... and both pullets are totally fertile, no doubt.. The lil birchen is a "go getter"... ;)

I guess 12 roos 6 pullets

So any news? A pip Count?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Sigh, still just the one pip, and no progress on it. I'm holding out for morning.

You are both depressing with your roo counts.

Clarkson, KY

S'okay -they got 'em all!!

Lodi, United States

We threw ourselves on the roo grenade!

Ferndale, WA

Mox What do those novices know? Eleven Roos and seven Pullets. No need to say thanks. Glad I could be of help. LOL Haystack.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

My last hatch had more pullets. (not Dutch Bantams) So where are you at this morning? I hope a bunch more pips!

Clarkson, KY

Indeed. At which juncture do the current hatch stats rest?
(for Claire and Cats and maybe Jay -the rest of us don't neeed to anchor our prepositions so thoroughly to the bow of the ship ---pblphbhllphbpbllhlh.)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Commander Moxon reporting! Successful emergence of first life form! Hooray!

It has a bit of a comb....the roo theory is becoming fact....but it's darned cute!

Four confirmed pips!

Cutest lil Dutch Roo EVER!

I love your pics Claire! What a wonderful way to start the day!! Congrats and thank you so much!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

How adorable. The Leader of the Peck.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

BTW, there was a second one just out before I left for work today. Striped. I will do pics when I get home because it should be dry by then. Early indications tended toward pullet.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Are you home yet Commander?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Commander reporting (have been assisting with building barn in back 40)

Reporting 5 life forms hatched and 7 further pips!

4 life forms presented here, 2 similar striping, one different color striping, and the original black one.

This one is entirely bewitching.

A covert operation in progress?

Remember--you can NEVER turn your back on Dutch Bantams. They are far too clever.

Clarkson, KY

That looks like my last hatch! Beautiful eyes on that gal, too! (or guy, ummm) How many varieties to that wild-n-stripey thing?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

They are sneaky, and they can hide almost anywhere due to their diminutive size.

BUT, I have Scrimshaw. She keeps me very informed on the Dutch bantam world and its intricacies.

Yes, it is important to always have an informant. So far my Dutch will not break rank--I have resorted instead to baby monitors for overhearing their complicated and inventive schemes.

Clarkson, KY

That's a perfect name for her!
I'm getting fascinated by feathering again. The 'araucana' babies I have are getting feathers like hers. They started out looking like the four in your pic -well, two reddish striped with cheek puffies, one yellower stripey, and one BR mutt who was black with a spot o' yellow. But that complex feather patterning she's got (hah!) is some part of this blue egg thing I can't figger out...

Clarkson, KY

Do you use an interpreter? Or just listen closely?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Grow, I don't know enough about the various colors of DBs to know how many get that stripey thing. There are the two right now that are definite dark/light stripe, and one is more a cinnamon/tan stripe.

This site seems to outline the varieties by color.

I still can't figure out what Scrimshaw is.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I can't disclose my informant's practices with me. It's a deal we made. ;-)

Clarkson, KY

All I remember is wild type e+e- and something about Colombian markers. Lost my notes and don't retain this stuff well until I really understand it (which I obviously don't, lol).

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Special Agent of the chick inspection division reporting. Confirming DB life forms current count appears to be 5 and climbing. Suspicious behavior noted. Placing guards to ensure the safety of the nation (or at least Commanders’ farm) Recommending the use of the goggles to shield selves from mind meld cuteness. Over.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Goggles on, everybody, the cuteness abounds. We are at 10, repeat, TEN hatched! Three pipped. Five eggs not pipped and showing no signs. Possible trojan eggs? Could be a total of 13 life forms....very suspicious...

A little bit of investigation has revealed the following:

1. A single black life form as shown before (first one) with a small, light grey belly spot.
2. A second black life form not yet dry, hard to say on spots.
3. The pictured black life form with white down on wings and full belly. Cuteness factor off the chart.

4 & 5.

"The Karamel Kids"

A nice cinnamon swirl sort of tone, very yummy looking. Some differences between them, but generally they are the only two with this caramel brown tone to their fluff.

6, 7, 8 & 9.

Variations on the chipmunk theme. There are four that fall into this category. Here are two of them.

Some research has indicated that these might be silver DB.

What a wonderful way to start my day.. :) Your pics are more detailed than I could see if I were holding them! Love that lil boo boo in the last pic..

I can't honestly tell the roos from the pullets... unless maby you had comparison shots of the heads of all of them..

Congratulations Commander on a great hatch.. AGAIN.. :)
