April OT

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sorry guys--I've got dibs! I asked first. Ha-ha!

(Zone 1)

LOL, my house is very small, only one guest bedroom ... but hey, I could make room on the floors for sleeping bags! ^_^

I do have a lot of plants but not nearly as many as some folks! I don't have many plants inside the house like a lot of y'all do. I've seen many photo's here on DG where some people have hundreds of plants inside and outside and read where they have to move everything in during the winter. I can't imagine living where it gets cold for long spells in winter and having to move so many plants in and out. I do move my fifteen or so orchids and the hoyas in when we are predicted to have cold nights but everything else just stays out and gets covered with blankets. I did lose some plants from the cold this winter ... we had the coldest weather I remember in a long time, with a couple of freezes and temp's in the upper 20's! I hope it's many, many years before we see that again!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

sure is pretty, love your pool room.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Bonnie! It's so nice to sit out there and just relax when it's all clean and lookin pretty!

(Zone 1)

Found a rose bush blooming yesterday. The tag is long gone, but I think I remember having one called Angel Face which might be this one. I will have to do some research to be sure. Anyway, it sure is pretty and smells nice too!

We replaced the cool weather flowers a couple of weeks ago. This is the summer planting. Little coriopsis, Hot pink Salvia, purple salvia, and the Pink Turks Cap that is there all year. I forget the white, snowflakes or something.

I'll chime in with everyone else on your lanai and porch Lin!
You should host the gessie reuinion and we'll all sleep by the pool!
It really is gorgeous!

(Zone 1)

Oooh, Gessie Reunion??!! Sounds like a plan ... wonder if I could convince my DH of such a thing? I can see him rolling his eyes right now!

A gessie reunion sure sounds like fun! I've heard of a club called the Red Hat Ladies where all the (ahem) "older" ladies wear purple clothes and red hats, and get together once a month for lunch or dinner. For many years I've heard a saying "When I'm old, I shall wear purple!" I don't know if that's what started the Red Hat Club or not but it's certainly a cute idea!

We could be a bunch of younger & older ladies & gents who wear a rainbow of color's (since Gessie's come in all colors) and we could have a once a year meeting! Wouldn't that be something to look forward to ... meeting someplace and having lunch and shopping for plants and pretties or going to shows.

Awhile back there was talk about an annual DG convention type get together. I was so hoping it would be arranged and happen, it would have been a blast but I guess the discussion about something like that got dropped because of controversy and differing opinions.

I forgot to add my OT bloom...
Strawberry begonia...
Looks like a fairy to me!

Pretty flower, does look like a fairy!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I love Strawberry begonias! Have you seen the tri-color ones? They are fussier, but very pretty. Your sinns are just great Rose! Esp. that fuzzy one! Syru--your baby sinn is cute! I wouldn't transplant just yet... How are your violets doing? Is there an age requirement for Red Hat? I think I'm not old enough yet--LOL

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I call them "your purple people" when I'm talking to my mother. I think if you are not "of age", they still let you attend meetings, but you can only wear pink or lavender . . .

Columbus, OH

Sorry I've been MIA everyone...we had weather issues in the winter, so by the time I sopped up my basement, I had a little surgery, and I'm now back. My family and friends made me adhere to the surgeon's instructions about carrying things like plants around. *blush*

I'm so glad to see everyone, and the blooms :)

Williston, ND

what about me,im not wearing a dress for this reunion ,im hoping im invited too

LOL

Pink hatters havew to be 50, Red hatters have to be 60. My dtr bought me a gorgeous red hat from Victorian Traders last year for my birthday. I wear it for real dress up and parades. We're having a tes at the nursing home this saturday as the host is the nh manager.

Great photos everyone. I'm gonna have to look into begonias. I just love that Strawberry begonia. It sure does look like a fairy.
Mortswife, you look terrific. Love the pic.
Sally, your container gardens are beautiful. Gives me inspiration. I have to find plants that will grow in the humid heat. There are not too many.

(Zone 1)

Cheryl, that is too cute! I'm 61 but I'd prefer the pink hat myself as I'm just a pink kinda gal ... always been my favorite color!

Wildrose: What conditions, light, water, fertilizer etc. do you give your strawberry begonia? I have a small one that's about 3 years old and it has never bloomed! Over the years I've had large baskets of them and never a bloom either. I need to know the trick to get them to bloom! You should add your photo's to Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53215/

Imadigger. I am in SUPER humidity in summer! I love fall, winter and spring. We have wonderful weather until the hot, humid summer. But, it is that way in most of the nation. I have lived in a lot of areas. Just more humid here near the Gulf. As soon as summer arrives, I look for FALL to come!

Sally--what is that in the photo?--pretty! Looks like humming bird fare to me.
Jim, we'll be looking for the not old enough guy in the pink hat at the reunion--we'll let you slide on the purple dress!
I just found out I'm going to Logee's tomorrow! Woo-hoo!

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

YOU are a lucky duck. What are you going to buy? Tell us all.

South, TX

That is Bat Face Cuphia in that photo. LOVE it, looks like a bat.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Sally, I love the Bat Face Cuphia. You have the most unusual flowers. I'll have to check for it around here. I like the unusual.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I hate to admit this Lin, but I just recently bought the strawberry begonia I have, and it was already in bloom... as a matter of fact it has three sprays of blloms on it. It really is attractive! I have had this begonia before, but never to bloom (either), but I lost the one I had last winter, and wanted to replace it. I found this one at Lowe's and "had to have it!" I'm sorry I can't give you more than that! My other rex begonias I have usually bllom in the winter, while in my east window... just watering thoroughly when dry, and feeding when I remember to!

Here is the whole plant I just got...

(Zone 1)

Wow! It sure is a beauty, really pretty plant! I really love the flowers too! I think I'm going to start feeding mine to see if I can get it to bloom.

Strawberry Begonia is not actually a Begonia, it just has the common names of Strawberry Begonia or Strawberry Geranium ... the foliage sorta resembles some Begonia's but it's in an entirely different Genus, Saxifraga: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/b/Saxifragaceae/Saxifraga/none/cultivar/0/

Columbus, OH

For some reason, those strawberry begonias hate me. They sulk for a month or two, then die.

(Zone 1)

I can keep them alive inside the house but if I move them out to my deck they kick the bucket. I've found I have better luck with them when I keep them on the dry side. All of the plants on my deck get watered twice a week with the garden hose and I think it was just too much water for it. I had a beautiful large, full hanging basket of this plant for about 3 years and moved it outside and it died within two to three months! I know I watered the poor thing to death.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Really beautiful picture everyone!! (including your self portrait Cheryl)!! I think Jim would fit in just fine with bright red pants,a shiny purple shirt, and a pink hat. What do you think Jim?? LOL
Lynn

(Zone 1)

Not the greatest picture but I was just out watering plants and noticed this Calla Lily blooming in a pot with a large Philodendron! I don't remember planting it but guess I must have. I had a bunch of calla bulbs in a flower bed out back a few years ago and I think there were a couple of calla bulbs in a birthday basket from a friend a year ago. I also found a couple of Sun Flowers sprouting in this Philodendron pot. Apparently when everything was outside while I cleaned the pool deck, the birds must have deposited seed from the feeders!

Lin--I love it when the birds help in the Garden! LOL
Got some great pics at Logees--They were thrilled when I told them I wanted to post them on Dave's Garden. We had a great time...Also went to Hart's Greenhouse in Brooklyn CT. where I recruited the girls to check out the AV forum! Hope they join. I will try to post some pics tonight....

Those just arent my colors lynn
i like bright orange,

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Imadigger, I need to show you how quickly your hoyas are growing. The one you posted is a dynamite bloom. Congratulations!!! Mine won't bloom until this summer as they don't get direct light until I take them off the porch.......???????

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

The hoya I posted as phyllura has been identified as maybe purpureo fusca. I posted a picture on Epiforums and two, so far, have named it as purpureo fusca. I send an email to Christina in Sweeden to see if she can confirm it. Her website has pictures and it sure could be.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Hoya Bella Lancelotta Variegata--the blooms on this one don't stick around very long...finally caught a pic!

Thumbnail by phoebesviolets
Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

At least your stuck around. Mine bit the dust. I don't have any luck with bella. I just rescued a pot of bella from lowes. I hung it near the bottom of the others. It gets the water drippings fro the pots above. So far, this one is still around. This is my fourth attempt. The other three were cuttings purchased in trades or bought from vendors. If this one doesn't make it, THIS IS THE LAST TIME. Oooops!!! I think I've repeated myself again. Must be my 'old age' creeping up. ^_^
