And look at the color on this one that just opened today!

Those are so pretty Neal! I have three that made it thru the winter and two are the color of your second picture and I just love them, not sure what the other one is going to be but looks like it's going to be different. How long will they bloom do you know? I had about six more against the house where it's pretty dry and no signs of those :( That's where I put my black and blue salvias too so I bet they don't make it either.

I just transplanted 22 of the orange ones from Maozamom, I think every seed ger minated for me, really if it wasn't so darn cold outside I think I would have gone ahead and planted them outside but they aren't hardened off yet I have them in one of my little big lots greenhouses in pots right now, transplanted some others yesterday from the jugs and put them in the greenhouse too.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

WOW -- you guys have stuff blooming?? i'm a long way from that.

I've been hardening off a few plants. We had a warmer day, probably Saturday and or Sunday... and i left some plants out in my unheated sunroom, til today.... the Yvonne's Salvia [which has bloomed] , Agastache Sunset Hyssop, and some others that i can't recall.... and the only think that was quite wilty was my Butterfly Weed. Hope it perks back up... I'd hate to lose those.

I think we are in for warmer weather tomorrow... and funny thing - i've checked the weather for our Park in Wisc, and they are 10 degrees warmer than we are, and will be warmer everyday this week. how sad is that?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

found this blooming this morning

Do you do a lot of MG's?

which one is that.... Sorta looks like Flying Saucer.

I've got a lot of MG"s to do... have not started them yet... though i need to.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Gemini, nice blooming wallflowers :) ours are not nearly as full but have their first buds starting to emerge. I winter sowed them from seeds from a past swap.

I still have seed "piles" here and hope to plant more before it gets too late. Our rack is filling up and I was not going to use the bottom shelf because of our cats, but I have a few flats on the bottom shelf now.....with fingers crossed. I took some "baby" pictures yesterday. LeBug, I love the Artemiss, it's leaves are fuzzy!

SW your Bower vine seeds are germinating :) How full does it grow? I'm wondering if I should plant them in a cluster of 3 or so plants, or just a single plant?

this is LeBug's Artemis salvia and Seandor's heirloom marigolds

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just can't say this enough, I love the Artemis leaves lol Nice babies Wind, make sure you give them room :) Mine that I planted about three years ago, the leaves are about one foot long now, they started coming back a while ago.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

LeBug, those pulsatillas are gorgeous! I had no idea they came in pink and maroon. I tried the pasque flower a few times, but they died on me. What kind of environment do they like?

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

thanks for the heads up on the Artemis size :)

this is Critter's Italian basil..... one of the stars in our garden....this year we have to remember not to harvest it all and leave a few to go to seed!!! we forgot last year - Critter was nice enough to send me more seeds ^_^

yes I think that is what it is

this one bloomed about a week ago

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

did you make pesto with the basil
last year mine got washed out with a week of heavy rain lost the whole garden except for the carrottes

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm not really sure but where they are it stays moist most of the time, I was watering this garden a lot then lost a couple of plants and noticed it stayed moist most of the time so I quit watering as much, I have an underground spring somewhere in the field and it must be around this garden, just clay soil, I amended it when I started planting this bed about three years ago and haven't done anything since.

I didn't realize they came in different colors either until mine bloomed, I started those from seed by WS. I get swarms of blister beatles on them in the late spring!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Wind the leaves are a foot long now but the whole plant of Artemis gets about three foot around. It's beautiful!

I have my lemon basil soaking now, I love those with my tomatoes makes them so good! I'm a little behind :)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

stuff outside is just starting to wake up bleeding hearts are not ever coming up yet
the sedums are budding, and the poppies are looking good now and the irises are just starting to grow new greens
all the bulbs are making buds should have some blooms by next weeks sometimes
and its amazing since everything is about three weeks early for my area

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I can't believe my columbines aren't blooming yet, I always thought they were in with the first bloomers of the spring. I can't wait to see the blooms of my firecracker this year, guess I'm just rushing it this year, I know I lost my bleeding hearts.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Wind, do you have domes for those flats? I found that I could prop the domes up vertically in front of the flat by tucking the edge under the flat, and it acted as a shield to keep the cats away, then I just wrapped the side of the shelves with saran wrap. Worked pretty well until the plants got taller than the shield and then the cats could give them a pruning :) Had to make use of every shelf I could!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I ran out of shelving long time ago my dinning room table is also covered now lol and I have four flats of babies to transplant into pots which will give me 9 more flats have no idea where to put them

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Holy cow this thread was almost silent for 2 days, then it took me 10 minutes to catch up with you all. LOL! I think I have my first bud forming on a abutilon. It's the only one I've got left since I lost the other 8 (and I'm still puzzled over what happened to them. I never did find them or their dead lifeless bodies either for that matter.) I've had to stay out of the plants for the last couple of days since I'm one of those April 15th tax filers and the pressure was on big time. But I got them finished today so tonight I'm in for a major transplanting session.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just did mail dad's taxes today, I don't have to file since I'm not working, must say haven't missed it but still have dad's to contend with. The post offices aren't staying open late here the 15th like they usually do.

I won't put my stands in the living room any more, I shut all the rooms off and have been living in the living room and sleeping on the couch trying to cut down on LP gas to buy for the winter, doesn't make for good sleeping with the lights on on the stands lol

klstuart, that's a great idea about using the domes for a sheild, I never would have thought of that! I'm only using two shelves on my stands in here haven't been that brave lol

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

we have till the 30th at midnight

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

We do our taxes in Feb.... we were already sent out direct deposit a long time ago... i'm sure it's already been spend... OH, yes, on PLANTS. hee tee -- well, maybe a part of it.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I just ordered some stuff from veseys they have all there annuals on at 40 per cent off so like six plants for like eight dollars and change so good prices

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I was just thinking about the perennial candytuft I have out front, one whole half of my sidewalk is in bloom and the other side only one or two blooms at a time! Guess it will bloom later. I had a bunch of maiden pinks in between the stella daylilies and candytuft, the MPs didn't come back none of them that was two years ago, anyway that candytuft sure is pretty! I have the strangest sun out front!

Does anyone else have the perennial candytuft? I got my start from one of my first seed trades on here, killed it the first two years then the third year was the charm for growing it :)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I have it all over the flower bed in the front in different colors

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Lea, this is my first go at English Wallflowers, so not sure how long they'll bloom. I think they just bloom in spring. The blooms on the English ones are bigger than the orange Siberian wallflowers. I'm growing perennial Candytuft too, from seed wintersown the last couple of years. I'd bought plants over the years and they never survived, but these from seed have done great. They seem to require really good drainage, and don't mind dry conditions from what I can tell. I'm seeing the first few buds arising from some Columbines- its usually the end of April before I start seeing blooms from them, and they're at their prime through May and usually into June. My black and blue Salvia usually shows up in May after things warm up, and they don't seem to mind being dry, so you may still see them return. Odd that the Wallflowers there didn't make it (they're evergreen, so you'd see em if they were still there)- these ignored the drought last summer like it was nothing.

Mona, do you have Perennial Candytuft in colors? I thought they only came in white.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

if you dead head your columbines on a regular basis you will have some blooms right into august just water regular

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Neal -- i was browsing thru a folder, looking for something and found this.... probably the only photo I took of my rose bed last year. I wish i knew the name of the red one ... it is very pretty, produces a ton of blooms... it was growing at the duplex my DH and I moved into before we got married, back in 1985 ... and i take it with me every time i move. only thing -- zero fragrance.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

wow those are so nice and you are in my zone maybe its time for me to plant some roses since I have none at this new house we got last year

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

thanks -- I'm partial to Hybrid Tea's. that is what most of those are... that wider looking Pink one, that is a Floribunda. I'd have to think of the name... or go out an look at the plant tag.

One of my all time faves is Peace.

Most of mine are J&P [Jackson and Perkins] and I have since found out, there are better places to get bushes, though i have always had good luck with them. I look for disease resistance and heavy fragrant [since i love to "stop and smell the roses"] plus the color. some how I managed to plant the only 2 pinks ones i have - side by side. I really need to remedy that. I LOVE yellow too. that one is Radiant Perfume. A real stunning yellow and quite fragrant. I just love it.

As I'm sure Neal mentioned before... hang out in the Rose Forum for a while... there are some real beauts in there.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH -- i just remembered the Pink Hybrid Tea is Memorial Day

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I move to this house last year and the perfect place for roses the lady planted rasberries so DH will have to move them this spring also he has to move a patch of giant daylillies about 15 feet by 6 feet not sure where to put them but will find a place hahhahaha
I think I will plant a red climbing one against the house and tea roses in different colors in the bed in front of that the area is about 15 by 18 feet so lots of room for them in full sun and protected by the house they should do fine

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I am writing the names down to look for those one they are so beautifull your rose garden looks just amazing

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous, Terese! Picture perfect, every leaf looks perfect.

Here's a blue flax I wintersowed last year, looking like its already budding!

Thumbnail by gemini_sage
Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow I don't check you all for an afternoon and get a epic novel lol
Terese I hear you on the need for a hobby room. The kitchen is all I have too and I have to constantly clean up potting soil. I have found the house of my dreams and it is still a dream but dreams and what we pray for come true. Anyway it has the neatest utility room which would be perfect for potting. Only thing is I am used to a huge yard with lots of beds but this is on a lot. I love it though and if we decide to sell our place I hope no one else has bought it. It's all in the future but I can't wait too long as I am getting older everyday. lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

My Blue Flax plants are still only a few inches tall... but i have A LOT of them. I'm considering moving them all into one big cluster.

I need a hobby room BIG TIME .. I've been sitting on line looking at floor plans to design [or have my kid design] the perfect home. [since he's bee about 8, i've been trying to convince him to become an architect] I even bought him CAD [academic version] Then i need to find a nice big plot of land somewhere... KY or TN maybe. 10-20+ acres.

OH one can dream.......

OH and i'm still waiting for the sun to come out... someone said the sun is shining today.... certainly not here.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Well Neal, that explains why my candytuft isn’t full on the other side of my sidewalk, it floods on that side, I need a low growing plant like the candytuft to plant on that side in between my Stella's, wonder what I could put there. I’ve got a few of the great blue lobelias there and a grass that likes wet conditions, it’s afternoon sun and wet conditions, what a combination!

I don’t think there are any perennial candytufts that come in colors I would have them :) Maybe they are annuals and they just reseed scicciarella? If they reseed that well maybe I should try them.

I read that post about you possibly getting some buds on your columbines Neal and had to go out to check mine but no buds yet :( I’m just in too big of a hurry this year, I do have buds on a couple of my blue flax too and they have reseeded in my middle bed, they have never done that it’s always been one lonely plant but I have four or five new ones for this year :) I’m curious to see if my red flax reseeds for me in my nectar garden, I put a lot of compost down around it like I was told to do and now I’m crossing my fingers!

Tcs, a big cluster of blue flax would be wonderful, I’m not sure how it would work though, I put the smaller tomato cages over mine to keep them upright because one plant makes a nice bunch but when they get to going they kind of knock each other down. Just one plant fills a tomato cage nicely so it gets a pretty good size. You’ve been growing the blue flax in the past haven’t you, maybe yours stands up better than mine :) My red flax didn't stand up all that well either but it's not nice and full like the blue. I'm going to try some red in my middle bed where it will get more sun this year so maybe it will do better there.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lea -- i did just order some plant hoops. that may work for a clump of'em.
the area in question are ones that will be first time bloomers for this year... they are scattered willy nilly -- that was a newer bed where I jsut sprinkled seeds last year ... the weeds sorta went wild too, since when everything was germinating, i wasn't sure what was a weed and what wasn't. So if i go out and organize the tiny plants, then i can put markers in.

My Reds stand up pretty tall -- i dont think i had an issue with them falling over. but they do have different foliage than the Blue.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I wish my reds would have stood up straight that's why I'm planting them in the middle bed for this year, my nectar garden seems to get full sun it's on a corner where it gets morning sun then the sun goes down at another side of it but it's in the sun all day I have so many problems with the darn sun here, how many times have I said that lol

I want to sprinkle seeds in my middle bed and haven't gotten rid of all of the creeper weeds yet, such a job and the weather just isn't cooperating right now!

Well I just lost a whole word document, don't know what happened one minute it was there and the next it was gone! Taking a shower then guess I'll go to the computer forum, such a pain! One of these days I'll learn to back up!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lea -- did ya know when somehow the whole page goes poof... before you do anything, hit Ctrl+Z
which is UNDO, and you may get it back.
