Moving Threads

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I can certainly understand why certain threads are moved in most cases. It might be a better idea to contact the author first in some cases, such as mine, before moving threads.

I hosted a Joke contest with Datura seed as the prize in the Datura forum for a reason. Many people were wanting datura seeds. I also posted a link in seed trading forum as well. The voting is today. The thread was moved to the Jokes forum and now people don't have a clue as to what happen to it or where to vote.

This happened because I inadvertently posted voting instructions in this forum. I immediately realized my mistake and deleted it and posted in the correct forum.

I'd like to hear other peoples views on moving threads.

We move threads around for many reasons, and the system allows us to automatically generate a note to the thread starter to let them know their thread was moved.

Sometimes we see a misplaced thread and move it. Sometimes we hear grumblings and complaints about an (arguably misplaced) thread, so we look over the thread and agree to move it. When that happens, we usually take full responsibility for the move and we don't mention the complaints. (Fielding the occasional flak-filled response helps us keep the peace among members ;o)

While we would like to be able to confer with a member anytime we think something needs shuffled around, we simply can't. Our admin team is pretty small--just three of us, including Dave--field thousands of questions and requests monthly from members, visitors and vendors, along with all the other editorial and administrative duties we keep up with day in and day out. That means we don't have the luxury of approaching a member, and waiting to see if they agree to a move or change, and sending them a reminder if we don't hear back within a few days.

But there is good news: as long as the thread followers have posted to the thread, or clicked on the "watch this thread" link, it won't matter where the thread is located--anytime there's a new post, an alert and link will show up on their home page. If you are a thread starter, and you are informed a thread has been moved, you can always drop a new note at the bottom of the thread, letting everyone know it's been moved. That will send out an alert to every person watching the thread.
