Weird weather of '09!! ... #9

Eugene, OR

We weren't even supposed to get snow that sticks in the first place. LOL

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Some people say you valley folks have webbed feet! LOL

Eugene, OR

We need them for all the rain we get!! But we don't have snowshoes.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Definitely. Webbed feet (literally for me) and NOOOO snowshoes!

Portland, I want to see if I took a picture of a match to your shrub up above. I think that it is. I thought that yours was spirea cinera but I think that it's actually Spirea Prunifolia.... which is what this plant is.

lol... good one MW!

Eugene, OR

One of the things that impressed me when we moved here was how much of a DUCK town this is. We had favorite teams in CA too, but nothing compared to this. LOL And after 10 yrs we're as bad as the rest!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Don't they say....'isn't it good to be bad" lol

Eugene, OR

Hahaha....I'm sure enjoying it!!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Red I think you are right - I checked out the Prunifolia and it will get too big for the spot. I'm thinking about using a few of my red twig dogwood cuttings that I am rooting.

We had a lot of hail today and it is supposed to be pretty cold tonight. I covered the morning glory seedlings I put outside last week and hopefully everything else will be ok.

Hey - has anyone heard from Laurie?

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Sally, I belong to the LIONS club and we have a couple of attorneys who start something every week about who has the best cheerleaders!!

Eugene, OR

LOL

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

it is 24 d here and i'm cold

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

north wind makes it waayy cold

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Aw c'mon guys, that's warm! It was 18° when I got up an hour ago. Sun's shining and NO SNOW!!!! YEAH!!!! These are the times that I'm happy the weather liars lie!!!

Got my shorts on...36 deg here. LOL!

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I have yet to see an accurate weather forecast. I go by what my aching bones tell me.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I hear ya there!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Yeah, and my aching bones are telling me that the warmth of the sun had better make an appearance soon or I will take to my warm bed and stay there!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Judi, it's whopping 29° right now. Getting warm real fast, huh! LOL!

Susan105

(Judi)Portland, OR

It is warmer here than there but we are all so anxious for warmer weather! The forecast looks promising for later in the week here - what about out there in Bend? And what about Eugene? What's in store for the rest of you this week?

Will it be safe to plant strawberries this weekend? And tomatoes?

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Judi, it's supposed to be in the 70's this weekend and we're going to Vancouver to see our DD and family.
I hear it's supposed to be the same there.

Susan105

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I think we've had more north wind here this winter than usual.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I think you're right, and it just goes right through you. I HATE IT!!!

I think that I got your weather Susan! Fortunately only skiffs of the snow stuck, but it was snowing throughout me entire commute this morning (5 am) I'm not sure when it stopped, but it's not snowing now thank goodness!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Shelly, you sent it my way. It's been snowing here off and on for about an hour, not sticking though (not yet anyway).

OMG I was walking the dog this morning and as usual was admiring the Jack Frost plants in someone's yard two streets away when she came out of the front door. I told her how much I loved those plants and she said they were about to take everything out because they want grass for their little kids to play on and would I like some plants? There are at least 4 nice size Jack Frosts and some other really nice things that I don't know the name of. So in a few weeks I may have a big stash to share with my gardening neighbor! How cool is that???!!!???!!!

Ominous clouds today and cold. I put out snail/slug bait but something is eating my sweet pea seedlings. What kind of snail stuff have any of you had success with?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

WOOHOO!!! Way to go , Judi. She most likely had seen you admiring the garden and wanted to share with someone who appreciated them.

I count myself fortunate that the slugs here don't get near the gargantuan size that you all get, nor do the damage I've seen out your way. That's not to say, we don't have any damage, bit just isn't as bad. So, my remedy is to squish them when I find them.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

HOORAY FOR YOU!!!!

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

We lived over by Coos Bay once and they had these big banana slugs. We salted a few.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

EEEWWW!!! I HATE SLUGS!!!

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Judy...what a score with the Jack Frosts!! I am so excited for you! You don't know how long I drooled over them before I finally spent the $$ to get one! I have only really been successful with Cory's slug bait and hand picking/squishing or amonia water what comes to the bait. They are such a nightmare in our woods that it is unbelievable!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Sluggo is effective and is nontoxic to children and animals who happen to ingest it. Copper is sometimes used to surround plants and on pots as slugs are supposed to avoid travelling over it. I haven't been able to tell if it's effective yet - you have to make sure there aren't slugs inside the copper barrier laying eggs.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I always wondered how those little bas*!#*!! reproduce. I use Sluggo now but it's not working too well for me.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

It may not be that Sluggo isn't working, but that you just need to get ahead of them. Eggs can be and are laid at the base of plants, under rocks, in crevices on pots and the hatchlings then don't often don't have to cross the slug-bait line.

I use slug-picking, which is time-consuming and doesn't prevent all damage. You might combine the two things. Put out a piece of cardboard, plastic, paper, anything cool and they'll gravitate toward it. Then you can pick them off at dawn and at dusk and discard them. Our climate is so good for slugs, that to get ahead of them really requires consistent monitoring.

Some people plant companion "sacrifice" plants, too.

Eugene, OR

Snow here this morning too. Didn't stick, my outdoor cat stared at it like she couldn't figure out what was going on.

Forecast is to warm up for the next week. They're actually saying 75-80 for Monday, I don't believe them. Nights look to be warming but still under 50. I need 50's to put my orchids out. I'm thinking tomatoes though.

That wind that comes through feels like it's coming off the Artic ocean!!!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Sally, I would have done the same thing; snow in mid-April what?

Today was pretty nice here today, much of the day was sunny, if a bit cold and the rain showers were just rain.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yep, I said the same thing as you would have Laura!

Laura... so have you been back to the doctors and decided anything else about your knees?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

My appointment with the specialist is a week from tomorrow/today. Will see what they have to say. I had it give out on me four times between my bedroom and living room on Friday, but other than being a little sore it didn't do anything else that day, and that's the only time it has bothered me, but I'd prefer it never bothered me again.
