North CENTRAL TX RU **April 5th ** in ARL>>> (TRADES #3)
I have added white shrimp plant aka squirrel's tail (Justicia betonica) to my list. I have at least six well-rooted starts, so let me know if you would like one. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/82112/
Sheila, your photo reminds me .... I'll be bringing a mess of empty planters. Whoever wants them can grab them at the RU.
Carla
jenpat I will take some cannas for the altheas.
Wildcat - are there any specific cannas you'd like? They should be arriving from the co-op order next week, so unless something goes wrong with that shipment, I'll be happy to bring you whichever you choose.
jenpat I know nothing about cannas so I have a hard time making a selection.
Ok - I'll be happy to pick a few out & bring them for you. They will be rhizomes, freshly sent from the supplier, ready for you to plant.
Patricia, here are the squash seed I have.
zucchino rampicante
an heirloom vine, the fruit can be eaten young for summer squash or develop into winter squash.
long of naples
long pie
kakai
thai large pumpkin
sucrine du berry
jaradale
I have a few extras of zucchino rampicante, thai large pumpkin and jaradale if anyone else would like to try them :0)
I'll take one Cocoa!
What's an alamo vine? Do I want one?
:)
Of course you do, what kind of flower buddy says 'no' lol http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53476/
These are my first, so I'm not really sure what to expect. I'm going to try growing them on the ground next to the road. Might work for your mailbox or along that "hot strip" in the front. What do ya think?
Okay, sure, that's really pretty. Think I've seen it before, but never knew what it was.
We're getting ready to chop down that wisteria that is eating the fence. Eventually it'll be replaced with the American variety, but that will have to wait until we're sure we've gotten all the runners from this one. In the meantime, a pretty vine to cover that corner would be very welcome.
I just realized that, so far, the passiflora (Maypop) that I planted last fall hasn't made an appearance. I don't know if it's too early, or what. But, if they are supposed to be up already, is there anyone who has any extras for trade?
Patrob, I will take a white shrimp...I still don't see any life from mine.I don't know if you had one available but I don't think I need another red daylily. I ended up buying a red stella, so I'll see how it does.
Cocoa_LuLu I would love one zucchino rampicante, if you have any left.
I have you down for white shrimp plant, Anna. I'll cancel the red daylily. My daylilies all look sorry right now because of constant deer-nibbling. Hopefully by fall I'll have some nicer ones to offer.
jenepat, the salvia is about 2 ft high. I have seen it not trimmed and it is closer to 3, but more scraggly. Maybe someone else has a better measurement.
Thanks, Patrob. I hope the red stella will be vigorous like the yellow.Maybe I will be trading them next year!
Boy, you guys are really cooking!!!
Anna, please let me know how your red stellas do. I bought a couple of Ruby Stellas on eBay, and so far I haven't seen much performance from them.
Pattie, I've been cutting down American wisteria this week and preparing to eradicate it. It was growing on a trellis right against the covered back porch and was going everywhere. Plus the trellis broke because of the extremely high winds we have had. I may not be able to get all the roots out, so I'll likely have some when you want it, or I could pot up some now for you before I start extermination.
I think the kind you are trying to get rid of is what I want. The American does not have the sweet fragrance and fat bloom clusters that my grandmother's did, and that is what I am trying to find. If you happen to have a runner or a piece of root available, I'd love to try it. If it covered 600 feet of fence, I'd be very happy.
Anna - I think I will give the salvia greggii a try in that bed. We're hoping to have a variety of things out there to create some interest. I think you're already bringing me some pink salvia, so I think that's definitely where it will go!
Yes Lynea please, I would love to have one.

Pat, it sounds like we need to trade wisterias--LOL. Mine is surrounded by fence and a paver patio, so I am not sure I can dig up any of it. I may have to try some cuttings. I have never tried before to root wisteria and have no idea how easy it is to do. But surely, as rampantly as it grows and sends up runners, it can't be that hard to propagate.
Anyway, I'll be glad to check into it and see what I can get for you. It might be that it will take a little while and we need to trade at either the CS or ET RU's.
Jenepat, I still have some cut leaf rudbeckia, would be nice for the back of the border.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/93287/
they're tall, bloom in the fall, carefree, and spread without being aggressive.
Wonderful, Josephine. I'll put your name on one :0)
Cocoa - thanks so much for the suggestion/offer, but we had those growing at our old house & my husband always complained about them. I guess we're not rudbeckia fans! :)
Thanks sounds good, Pattie. I'll be happy to try to salvage some of the American wisteria for you regardless. I have the little tractor in from the ranch and have been shoving shinnery. I'll see if I can pull up the main plant and pot it for you.
Lynnea~I'll take some of the rudbeckia. I think the one I got from Sheila last fall didn't make it. :(
Jenepat, do you think you would like ornamental grass for your border? I have Japanese silver grass. It grows about 3-4 ft high. It stays in a clump and fills up space well. Only thing is it is hard to dig up if it is against a fence.
Here is our FINAL sign up thread:

Anna - the Japanese silver grass sounds like it would be a great addition. Thanks! Oh, and my husband wanted me to tell you the four nerve daisy you passed off to him at the Fall RU is blooming right now. He was very excited! :)
I have a question about Turk's cap. I notice a lot of you North Texaners grow it, but in PlantFiles it says it's hardy to zone 8b. But I'm assuming most/all of you have had luck with it surviving our winters, right? Does the foliage stay evergreen, or does it die to the ground & return in the spring? I'm excited to try it out this year.
Jene....The Malvaviscus drummondii will die back in the fall but return in the spring. Frostweed has a large bed of Turks Cap that is stunning!
I have a Turk's Cap that I grew from a cutting from a plant in my dad's neighbor's yard. (They've lived there since I was young, so they were happy to share with me.) That was 2 years ago and now it's finally big enough to go in the ground. It's survived in a pot outside the past 2 winters. I can't wait to see it bloom this summer after transplanting!! I'm going to put it with the Frostweed I got from Josephine (frostweed) at the fall ru last year.
Jen~tell your DH that the Four Nerve Daisy will spread and bloom almost year round. It only slows down in the heat of the summer and the dead of winter. It's always the first to start blooming here and the last to stop.
Great Sheila! How tall/wide do they generally grow in a season?
