Apple Iphone Application?

Dave...

Have you ever considered an Iphone app? I just recently got an Iphone and I am blown away by the various applications available. It's awesome! However, with over 15,000 apps, there's really nothing for gardening! It would be so amazing to be able to connect to plant-files while shopping at a garden center OR keep a detailed diary of your plantings, inventory, etc...

Of all the applications that are available, I just can't believe that somebody hasn't come up with something for us gardeners...I do happen to know a fellow who has created two very good apps for Iphone that have been accepted. Let me know if you would like his contact info. I just think it would be a great additon to Dave's Garden...

I vote for this and I don't even have an iphone (YET). LOL

I think that would be cool too! In the meantime though if you have an iPhone you can get on DG while you're at the garden center--the web browser is quite good (vastly superior to other cell phone web browsers).

Me too. Patti

I have had an iphone for more than a year, and use DG PF whenever I am at nurseries. No problem at all and very handy when I need plant info.

I wish Dave's had a more stripped down version to access from iPhone or for people with Blackberry etc. I have the iPhone, and many sites now have an alternative address for mobile access. Makes getting to the site a lot faster.

I am good on threads that don't have a lot of images, or don't go over 200 posts, but the others just don't load. I don't have access to wireless, I have to connect with the older, "edge" technology.

I have not tried accessing the plant files -- yet!

I have my Dave's Home page right on the front of my iPhone, as a shortcut, so I can just push it and it links me right to my Dave's home page. I have taken out many of my favorites, so only a few show, so that it will load quicker. It seems to take the longest to load the header and header photo.

I actually access Dave's 80% from my phone, only 20% from my home Mac.

I'm with you Daylily...

I access Daves from my Iphone all the time, but I just think a paid application/easier way to get to plantfiles and possibly a utility such as a garden diary would be so convenient. It would also bring in so many new members, once they realized what is available here at Daves garden.

I access DG and PlantFiles from my ipod touch via wifi and it works great. The drawback is that if you aren't near a wireless connection, you aren't going to get it. Thankfully, wireless connections are all over the place now and more and more are being added all the time.

I've been trying to wrap my mind around it being an app, but both DG and PF are constantly changing and growing. I can't see how an app would possible be able to stay current. Just with PlantFiles alone, the size of the app would be larger than any iphone or ipod touch would be able to handle. Especially with the photos.

I see the problem now. The plant app on the iphone is lame. I am devoted to PlantFiles because it is so extensive. Patti

I think I've got the same lame plant app. Maybe PlantFiles has spoiled us. :)

Joan...I think that if large sites such as Phanfare or All Recipes could have an app, I can't see a problem with Daves, especially if it's only 1 component.

Maybe so. The decision is ultimately up to Dave and Terry.

Why stop here? How about Dave's Garden Nursery finder using the built-in GPS? Combine this with Botanical gardens, plant shows, etc.
You can find any restaurant you want through 100's of programs...how about a place to buy your plants and rate them?

Garden Watchdog App
Products & Sources App
Daves Marketplace App

The list could go on and on...

Oooh KatG! Keep going! You are thinking right along with my wants & needs....

I'm with y'all 100%. I'd like to see a mobile-friendly version of DG and its tools, but I'd also love to see an Android app as well as an iPhone app. Android is based on Linux and is open source...Dave, what fun you could have with this. :) I can see the GPS feature being great for generating ad revenue for DG as local merchants could advertise for a radius around certain locations. That would rock!
