I am sooooo excited! My last nest-watching adventure ended in sadness, when the eggs got blown out of the nest. However, I inadvertently discovered another nest today, and I am just thrilled! This nest is in a tree above the common HOA road, but I am able to climb up a bit behind the tree to get a few pics. There are two babies, and man are they cute. :-)
Here is a pic of mama on her nest, and you can see two little baby beaks sticking out each side of the nest
I found another hummingbird nest!!!
Congratulations sunny!
Thanks Pelletory! I am just a tad excited as you can probably tell. ;-)
Oooh, they look close to flying age. Watch closely, Sunny! I'm so glad you got to see another one.
Sure looks like a tongue to me!
Sunny that is sooo cool! maybe I need to adopt some of your humming babies?! teehee!
I heard a single frog croaking last weekend...hoping there are lots more this year, maybe their croaks will drown out the sound of the freeway ^_^
How exciting for you. I would love to find a nest.
sunnyg, that is fantastic! Great shots. What a wonderful thing to spot the nest and see mama and babies.
YAY!!! Congrats. I was following the other thread and was hoping that you'd find another nest.
This so cool! How lucky you were to find another nest... with babies!!
Congrats!
SunnyG,
I'm so happy for you! What a great experience!
Maggie
Thanks so much everyone! I've been going through a pretty rough time, and it's so wonderful to have such a happy distraction. Anjl, the last croaking I heard was on Feb 5th (my bday, so I remember), and it's been silent ever since...I am so sad and mystified about what happened to my poor little froggies. I'm really glad you've heard one this year!
I haven't seen mom near the nest this morning...but I have only made one trip out so far (not the last of the day, I am sure. LOL) Here is a pic of the tree (nest on the branch on the left side...can you see it?) I climb up into the ivy to take some of the pics.
Wonderful pics sunnyg. Thanks for sharing.
I found another nest this morning! I think it might be the same mama as the one I was watching last month: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/950657/
I don't see any babies yet, but mom is certainly active. The nest is on the property of the condos next door, across the fence from the one that the eggs were blown out of last month. Hummers still eat at the feeder I put up last month, and at least one hummer frequently feeds and then flies over the fence and down into the oleander bushes next door (that's what made me go look over there). Unfortunately the nest is on private property (condos). While it is in a common area, it is in front of the house of a most unpleasant man, so I will have to be sneaky about when I visit.
Thanks Dahlia...you know I love my critters, banana slugs and all ;-)
^_^
wow, look at you with all those nests.
No kiddin Mrs. Ed. I get so excited to just see one in the spring or fall. I would swoon if I ever had a nest (not that it would ever happen).
Two Different NEsts - how FANTASTIC! Yes, watch out for the mean old man.
Sunny! WOOHOOO! Amazing! Folks, I got to meet Sunnyg last week. I saw the empty nest and it was sad. NOW, MORE!!! yayayayaya, you are amazing Sunny! Can't wait to take the trip to Annie's Annuals garden center!!
Hissssss - boooooo - mean old man!
lol sunny...looks like we need to get our black clothes on and sneak over huh? my camera is already black :o) maybe we canplant some seeds in his yard at the same time...might cheer him up a lil :o) teehee!
Sunny.... How wonderful that you have a knack for recognizing the nest and can enjoy the process.
You need to become friends with someone that lives in the condos so the old man can't say anything about you being there.
Or...what about taking him a plant that hummingbirds like and telling him about the nest. Who knows, it might brighten his day; then he may be nicer later.
Its great to know of your finding more hummers nests!! I can feel you smiling in your words!!
Sheri
Awww thanks all! Yes, I am really happy to have this new hummingbird adventure, and can't wait for tomorrow so I can see how they are doing. Cissy, you (and anyone else who happens to come into the area, Anjl? RTP?) should totally stop on by and check out the babies in person :-). I can't wait for the Annie's Annuals trip either...like I need more plants, ha! LOL
Thanks for the advice my neighbor situation. The man I am worried about isn't actually old - he just tends to be an aggressive person who likes to yell not so nice things and makes a huge fuss over nothing. I've actually never met him, but I have seen him when his yelling brought me to the window and I heard him go on and on last summer....it makes me want to avoid him if at all possible.
I took my camera this afternoon when I went out for a walk, as I knew I'd be passing by the nest. On the way out the door, I saw mama hummingbird from next door (the nest in the oleander bush) swoop over the fence for a drink from the new feeder I set up next to the old nest. I know it's silly, but I really do think she might be the mama who lost her eggs last month. She kind of looks the same, the oleander nest has the same "feel" to it (versus the nest in the tree), and when she saw me today, instead of heading for the feeder she came right at me yelling all the while, flew right above me, and then pooped. This time she didn't poop on my head, but it was pretty darn close, and that seemed to be her "trademark" move. ;-)
Here is a really blurry pic of her feeding, after the attempted poop attack:
Looks like they will be flying down to the feeder before long. Then you can get a really good shot.
You are going to have to put in a stronger bush /tree in your yard to lure them back! That is awsome to see them nest close by, even if you had to deal with grumpy.
ha ha ha ha @ the "trademark" move ! It really could be the same little mama.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same one. We had a male here for a few years that I called 'Bumpy' because he had an odd bump on his bill. No mistaking him.
I love those flat feeders - it's easier to see the action without the bottle being in the way. Also, if an Oriole comes by, they will feed there too. Ours just arrived - I put the feeder in the same place each year and they know right where to find it.
